Bulls & Expansion Draft http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/bulls.asp?intID=37894121 <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Jay Williams is hoping to begin his basketball comeback next year in training camp. Will he be coming back with the Bulls? Or could he belong to the Charlotte Bobcats by then? Early next summer - perhaps before Williams has a chance to prove his health - the Bulls must settle on eight players to protect in the upcoming expansion draft. One possible list of eight would include Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry, Jamal Crawford, Marcus Fizer, Kirk Hinrich, Donyell Marshall, Jalen Rose and Scottie Pippen. In this scenario, Williams, Eddie Robinson, Roger Mason Jr. and possibly some others would be unprotected. If that turns out to be the case, Williams would be a tempting selection for Charlotte, which begins play next season. Should Williams fully recover from his June 19 motorcycle accident, the Bobcats would have a talented guard who played college basketball nearby at Duke. If Williams did not pan out, his contract could expire in 2005. "There are going to be tough choices for every team," Paxson said. "Since we have so many young guys, we're going to have it more difficult than some. Contracts will be involved. We've talked about it already and I have a preliminary list in mind." There are other strategies for the Bulls to employ. One is leaving Rose unprotected, gambling that Charlotte would not select a player owed $47 million over the final three years of his contract. Or the Bulls could leave Pippen, who will be 39 by next season, off the list. But if Rose improves his poor shooting from last season and Pippen helps lead the Bulls into the playoffs, it would be difficult to risk losing either player for nothing in return. </div> What do you think about this. Who should we protect in the draft? Who should we let go? I can't wait to see Eddie Robinson go
we can protect 8 players, right? if its 8 then <u>Protected Players</u> Jalen Rose Scottie Pippen Jamal Crawford Eddy Curry Tyson Chandler Donyell Marshall Lonny Baxter or Marcus Fizer Jay Williams or Kirk Hinrich also.... i just went to the bulls roster, and Linton Johnson F 6-8 Garth Joseph C 7-2 what are they doin on the roster? i never saw any articles on signings.

Maybe they showed up at training camp? I read somewhere that there were 12 guys there on the first day of training camp, meaning they had to have three years or less experience in the league, and the Bulls don't have 12 guys on their roster with that little experience I'd protect: Crawford Curry Chandler Marshall I'm unsure about the rest. Not resigning Rose would free up a lot of money to sign a good free agent that plays defense, but I don't really expect that to happen
In that case I protect(in no order) 1)Curry 2)Crawford 3)Rose 4)Chandler 5)Hinrich 6)Fizer 7)Pippen 8)Marshall

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting beasly3:</div><div class="quote_post">Your right! Jay Williams instead of Rose.</div> I wouldnt do that, just for the fact its a gamble with Jwill, and Rose is already good
The solution is obvious. The Bulls will protect Jalen Rose, Scottie Pippen, Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler, Donyell Marshall, Kirk Hinrich, and Jay Williams. They will then either release restricted free agent, Jamal Crawford or Marcus Fizer, into Free Agency while possibly talking about resigning that player. With the remaining protective spot they will protect the player that they did not force into Free Agency. By the way, Baxter is a Free Agent so don't discuss protecting him. This could all be changed quickly though. Noone knows how Jay Williams will be when he returns. Just as noone knows what this season holds for Marcus Fizer and Jamal Crawford. So let's just rest this discussion and bring it back up once the draft is looming.
I would not protect Rose nor would I protect Jay. Of course things can change after this season. But for sure I'd protect: Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler Jamal Crawford Donyell Marshall Marcus Fizer.
We will not protect Fizer. Why? We wont even resign him. There is no need to. Marshall is locked in at around $5 million a year. Thats a bargain for a player that can play 30 on any given night and get you double doubles. Fizer's salary is an unknown, depending on the FA market. With a good season, his salary could be more than Marshall's. Also, Fizer can play the PF, and thats it. Marshall can play both F spots, and at times, even gets some minutes at Center. His versatility is more of need. Chandler is our starting PF. Marshall is the backup. We will not invest a multimillion dollar deal in a backup backup PF. Fizer will be gone at the end of the season. We wont bother to protect him. We will protect the following: Curry, Chandler, Hinrich, Marshall, Pippen, and Rose We dont need to protect Crawford since he will be a RFA. Same with Fizer(but whom will not be resigned anyway). So what does that mean? We can protect 2 more players. Williams then will be protected. So we can protect one more guy, if we wish..... And if I am wrong about the Crawford situation, then we'd protect him as well.

No one. Jamal is the sure thing and will have a breakout year this year.

How can you call Jamal a "sure thing" then go on to chastise the idea of protecting Williams, a supposed "unsure thing" of coming back? Williams was drafted for a reason. Not only bec. PG was of need, but bec. he was the BPA. Protecting Williams makes sense. Chicago took him with the #2 pick last year. You may as well and gamble that he returns and protect him, especially considering Crawford doesn't need to be protected.
Did you happen to see the last 2 monthes of the season? I would rather have a healthy player than some guy who might never play again anyway. But you will see what I mean about Crawford after this year.

I never watch any of their games. They suck. Crawford put together a nice 2 month stretch. Yeah. Congrats. And you know what? So did Chandler and Curry two years ago. And they did it this past year. But for some reason, they don't get it going until half the season is over. Ill get excited when he can show up to play consistently.
He played mega consistant for the last 2 monthes. Averaged about 18 and 7. Chandler and Curry have shown flashes but they havent done it for 2 monthes like Crawford. Again, I dont really want to take the chance on Williams.
