Vince Carter scored 13 of his 28 points in the third quarter as the Toronto Raptors defeated the Detroit Pistons 88-81 Sunday in an exhibition game.

Carter outscored the Pistons in the third period, when the Raptors turned a 44-44 tie into a 63-54 lead. Detroit made just 4-of-17 shots in the quarter.

Rookie Chris Bosh scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Toronto. The fourth overall pick in the draft was more polished than Detroit rookie Darko Milicic, the No. 2 pick. Milicic had two points on 1-of-5 shooting.

Lamond Murray scored 12 points for the Raptors, who made 31 of 39 free throws. They played without forward Jerome Williams.

Chauncey Billups scored 19 points and Ben Wallace added 14 and 20 rebounds for the Pistons, who committed 28 turnovers.

Good stuff from Bosh and VC. It looks like Ad is not the second option on offence more like 3rd or forth. Ben Wallace is getting more point which is good to see. It looks like JYD, Mo and Bradley aren't fitting in well. Alvin sounds beat. I say trade Bradley and JYD or Mo for a point guard.

To be honest, im getting sick of hearing about the case. Vince returning back to his old ways would help out greatly

    Star's Take:

    <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Rookie Bosh jams Pistons
Raps' 19-year-old sinks 17 in win

Carter leads all scorers with 28

    JENNIFER QUINN
    SPORTS REPORTER

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.?Milt Palacio made a perfect bounce pass that landed a stride in front of Chris Bosh. It would have been perfect. His teammates sat on the bench just metres away, ready to cheer a dunk.

Instead, Bosh hesitated a step, and Detroit's Darvin Ham sped up. No basket. Ham got the foul, and Bosh got a lesson: Don't slow down.

And as the Raptors won their third straight pre-season game here last night, defeating the Pistons 88-81 in an entertaining matchup, Bosh was more than able to keep up.

"Basically," Bosh said, "I was just trying to gather myself. I didn't want to kick it off my foot or anything. I just wanted to make sure I had the ball first. And he's fast, because when I left him behind I didn't see anything. That was a great hustle play."

He finished his team-high 33 minutes with 17 points, two steals and two blocks. Vince Carter ? who appeared to be playing effortlessly ? led all scorers with 28 points. Two-time defensive player of the year Ben Wallace had 20 rebounds and 14 points for Detroit.

But it was the rookies who captured the imagination, with Bosh and Darko Milicic matching up against each other on one play that encapsulated the evening. Bosh was alone on the right wing and Milicic, the No. 2 pick in June's draft, came out to meet him on defence.

Bosh faked left and then moved right, blowing past the 18-year-old to the basket. He missed the shot but drew the foul, and said afterwards he knew exactly who he was looking at.

"Of course, yes," he said, a smile playing across his face. "I always think about who else is on the court, you know, because if you realize who the other guys are on the court, you can see the mismatches and you can see the best players to go to."

And Bosh, a nice, self-deprecating young man, insisted he wasn't trying to show up Milicic, who had four points and five rebounds in 10 minutes.

"Oh, no," he said. "I'm in the right place. I never had any second thoughts about that."

Head coach Kevin O'Neill ? a former assistant with Detroit under previous coach Rick Carlisle ? said he was trying to play Bosh heavy minutes to get the 19-year-old used to the pro game, and said he was pleased by the forward's progress. But he refused to gush over Bosh, saying just that he was happy with the solid game he played, and reminding reporters that it was only his third professional outing.

"He plays hard, he knows what I'm doing, he's a shot-maker," O'Neill said. "He's got skills. But I would also caution everyone that he's going to have some bad nights in the NBA. He's a young kid."

The Raptors had led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but Detroit cut that to one with less than four minutes to play. The Pistons, now coached by Larry Brown, were able to force Toronto to take bad shots, many of which took too long to set up.

After a timeout late in the fourth, O'Neill sent Carter and Antonio Davis back into the game, teamed up with Bosh and Lamond Murray, who played 30 solid minutes and finished with 14 points. Carter scored six of the Raptors' final seven points and was able to find Murray open on the wing for a wide-open three that secured the game for Toronto. Their next contest is in Moline, Ill., Wednesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.</div>

I think that bosh is the real deal and the Raptors should be happy that they drafted him with the 4th overall pick!!!

Pre-season games don't decide how teams will do when it matters in the season

Rockets have started 0-4..Will they be in the lottery this year? no...Cavs,Jazz and Nuggets have all started well in pre-season..does that mean they will be competing for the title and contend for the division titles? no

If you get too excited in pre-season....You could come crashing down to earth when the real games start...
