Both failed physicals, and had to be let go. What does this mean for the Broncos and Raiders?

Does anyone know how one fails a physical? I mean, what kinds of things do teams look for? How minor of a thing does it take to fail a physical?

Jamal Reynolds, for example, failed a physical with the Colts and nullified a trade. Three weeks later, he signed with the Browns. Apparently they weren't bothered by his knee damage or whatever.

Mobley's spine still had considerable bruises from his injury which would have kept him from playing football at all this year. So by this account he failed his physical. If he can't play there would be no reason to keep him on the roster so the Broncos released him to make room for another player. At some point in the future if he happens to pass another physical and desires to play he could sign with Broncos or another team. There is a very good chance Mobley will not play again in the NFL.

The Broncos do have solid linebackers to replace Gold and Mobley. Donnie Spragan, Jashon Sykes and Terry Pierce filled in very nicely while Mobley and Gold were hurt last year. Denver also has first round pick D.J. Williams from the University Of Miami who will push for a starting job this year.

Each team would obviously have their own standards for the pass/fail criteria. But with such a physical game involved, the better able to handle stress to the body the better. Some might use simple tests like pushing a certain amount of weight (usually based on body weight) to determine if a player can do the job. Others might decide that a left knee joint unable to handle 70% of the stress that right knee joint can handle (before failure) is unfit (and therefore can't make a cut at the needed speed). Always remember that (nearly) every player is nothing more than a piece of the overall package of the team, and an upgrade may be required when a part wears down. Sort of like changing the sparkplugs after 50K miles. All the other parts work better when you replace the most worn out one.
