During the summer, coach Bill Cartwright proclaimed that the Bulls planned to become an uptempo, fastbreak team this season.

The Bulls have some young players with speed and energy, so running should come naturally for this group, right?

Not so fast. Cartwright was hoping to speed up the action against the guard-oriented Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night at the United Center, but it didn't happen. The Bulls collected just 4 fastbreak points in a 98-91 preseason loss.

Getting an NBA team to run successfully is more difficult than it sounds. It's easy to fastbreak off a steal or blocked shot. But in any other circumstance, the transition game can be troublesome for the Bulls.

First off, the Bulls need to corral a defensive rebound and make a quick outlet pass. The team's young big men don't yet excel at either skill.

Then the Bulls need to make good decisions when they do start to run. Turnovers were a major problem last season.

"There's running and there's a right way to do it," Cartwright said. "First, we'd like to get a (defensive) stop and then run it. That would be great. That kind of prevented us from doing it last year. I think we'll get those stops this year.

"Then now, let's say if they are going to score, we still want to get the ball inbounds and push it up. I think that's where we'll be best. Early attack, push it up, get the ball inside."

A smooth fast break would be nice to see. [IMG] I'm convinced that we ran the absolute worst fast break in the league last season. That's the one thing Eddie Robinson is good at and we couldn't even get him the ball on the fast break :thumbsdow.

To be fair, its hard to get someone the ball on a fast break when they are sitting on the bench injured. :P
