<div class="quote_poster">Quoting :</div><div class="quote_post">Shaquille O'Neal said he expected Payton to have a talk about his playing time with Coach Phil Jackson.

"I know he wants to be out there a lot more," O'Neal said. "He's probably going to have a little discussion with Phil today. ? He's like me; he doesn't like to come out."

Through seven games, Payton is averaging 14 points and 7.9 assists. He is shooting 43.3% from the field, 23.5% from the three-point arc.</div>

So far he's played pretty good. Just give him the minutes and he will produce.

What did Shaq mean by that? Shaq seems to come out with his thoughts quite a lot. As for Payton, he's a player, of course he wants to play. I like that spirit.

GP deserves about 3 more minutes per game. We want to keep him fresh for the playoffs remember.

This was mentioned by another poster on a different board..and He is spot on

"Gary Payton knew damn well he'd be taking a reduced role when he signed with the Lakers. That means, less minutes, less points, etc. He knew that. No need to moan now once the ball is rolling. As talented as LA is, they can't afford to start bickering within their own unit.Their main goal should be a championship, and not personal accomplishments.

About Gary's minutes. He's getting 35mpg. Derek Fisher went from 35 mpg, to 27 mpg. Gary should just keep his mouth shut. He's getting 35 mpg on a team with three other superstars (two current, one past)."

I actually want GP to get more playing time. GP and Fish have good chemistry together when they run the backcourt...right now Fish has been struggling because the 2nd unit just doesn't click.

35 mpg is pretty high...he shouldn't be getting more than 40...and isn't this Shaq's assumption? that GP is going to demand more minutes? i don't think he'd really demand that much...since he already agreed to a pay cut...why waste it by demanding more minutes and therefore create internal problems?

Even being a Gary Payton fan, I'm also a Lakers fan. 35 mpg is decent, His minutes will increase in PO
