while they gave up esch(hasn't done anything), avery johnson(past his prime) and popeye jones(past his prime) for other promising players like jiri welsch and a monster on the glass, fortson.
I forgot about Avery Johnson. I thought he already retired and was part of the Mavs coaching staff. Anyone know for sure? I know he wasn't on the Mavs playoff roster.
Now if the Mavs could do something like lets say Mills for Camby(maybe throw in a first rounder) and then sign Kenny Anderson to the lle and Vladmir Stephania to his deal he is supposedly getting, then look at the depth chart: Lafrentz/Camby/Bradley/Stephania Dirk/Fortson/Camby/Stephania Jamison/Najera/Abdul Wahad/Howard Finley/Howard/Abdul Wahad/Daniels Nash/Anderson/Welsch/Daniels Look how deep that team is. I say we could even beat out Sacramento for depth now if that happened.
No, Avery Johnson was still apart of the team. Though, he wasn't on the Mavs coaching staff. I wonder if Johnson would retire and come down to be a coach with the Mavs!
Man what are the Warriors doing they weree ready to win this year even with Arenas gone this year. I really love Antawns game, but the steal of the trade is Jiri Welsch he has serious game. I think this trade makes Dallas the best in the league.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting YaoMing03-04:</div><div class="quote_post">Man what are the Warriors doing they weree ready to win this year even with Arenas gone this year.</div> They were not going to win this year with Arenas gone. One good player wont win you a playoff spot or a winning record for that matter in the Western Confrence. If you read Vintage's excellent post you would see that this was a cap move for the Warriors and the Mavs got a really good player in the deal. The Warriors weren't willing to be in luxury tax land if they werent a playoff team. The Mavs are a playoff team and they are willing to spend the big bucks to get the players they want.
About Fortson: He may be a great rebounder, but thats about it. GS has wanted to dump him for so long. Thats why he was on the bench so much last year. GS wanted him gone; even for nothing. This trade dumped Fortson and Jamison. GS had plenty of reasons to do this trade. Dallas did as well. Brandon for Jamison wouldn't have happened. Atlanta will not part with Brandon; they made that trade for a reason. Plus, Jamison for Brandon wouldn't have included Fortson, whom GS wanted to get rid of even more.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">About Fortson: He may be a great rebounder, but thats about it</div> Thats what the mavs have needed..big time rebounding...he is also a player who can give you 10-11PPG as well..
Great points Vintage, the Warriors definitely decided it's not worth the money to have a non-playoff team. However, I have a problem with this type of ?short term? mentality. The Warriors had one of their best seasons in a long time and had 3 great young players Arenas, J-Rich, and Jamison. The team played with a lot of heart and excitement and the Warrior faithful slowly started coming back and buying tickets to watch the Warriors. Now Arenas and Jamison are no longer part of the formula and the Warriors will be lucky to win 30 games this season. The momentum they were creating and the winning attitude in the clubhouse has come to a halt. The fans who were looking forward to this upcoming season have been crushed. The franchise has now shown the fans and the rest of the league it is not committed to doing whatever takes to get into the playoffs and put a winning product on the court. This will have serious repercussions for at least the next two seasons. I understand it's all about the bottom-line for the owners and they are here to make money. Most are scared to pay the luxury tax and they do whatever it takes to avoid it. But this is merely ?short term? thinking. If you look around the league, the most successful franchises are the ones shelling out the cash for star players and building a winning attitude with their franchise. Look at how fast Cuban and the Maloofs have turned around their respective franchises. They went on a shopping spree grabbing high profile players and handing out a lot of high priced contracts. However, it has all been worth it for both owners. They have two of the hottest teams in the league and have a large fan base nationwide. Producing a winning team helps create ?BUZZ,? buzz helps sell tickets, merchandise, and gets your team on TV increasing your advertising revenue. They are aggressive and concerned with one thing winning, because at the end of the day winning equates to more money. In the long run winning teams are also able to attract the free agents at bargain prices saving them even more money. Case-in-point the Lakers this year grabbing Karl Malone and Gary Payton. Players are willing to sacrifice pay to play for a winner and a shot at a title. So even if the Warriors free up cap space and try to pursue two max contract superstars, they are going to lose out to a contender. We?ve seen this plenty of times over the last few years and what ends up happening is the team with a lot of money settles for a lesser player and overpays them. So the vicious cycle will continue for teams like the Warriors. Looking at their team history there has been the Run TMC era, the Webber-Spree era, and now the short lived Arenas, J-Rich, Jamison era. So until Cohen and Saint Jean are replaced and new ownership not afraid to spend steps in, this franchise will be tagged as a loser, and to me that?s <u>bad business!</u>
About the business aspect you brought up. I agree, but it wouldn't have worked. Arenas was a FA. The Warriors didn't have the cap room to keep him. Thats bec. they were over the cap limit, and didn't hold his bird rights since he was a 2nd round pick. There was nothing GS could do. Thats why they were frantically trying to move Fortson for nothing last year. To gain cap room to resign Arenas. You cant go over the cap to resign a FA if you don't have the bird rights. All you can do is offer the MLE. Arenas got $10 million to go to Was. 4.9 Million wasn't going to cut it. The Warriors had no choice.

Arenas was willing to return to the warriors..but the owner said he would not pay arenas the money he wants next season when they can give out more money...being a long term deal..Arenas said he felt disrespected so he choose the Wizards..he would of agreed to the MLE for one season instead of taking 60 million from washington but the owner didn't want to give him a long term deal after that..BIG MISTAKE
I cant believe the warriors had a chance to pay him and they did not. If they did they could of dumped antwan of the jazz for ostertag or something.
Arenas was talking about it on the radio....He said the owner disrespected him ....but he wanted to return he said.
Danny Fortson's time is up, well thats what I think. NVE is great, Antawn Jamison is a great player that can play 2 positions.
