I don't think adding Melvin Ely to the mix, will help them out that much.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting ObieCent:</div><div class="quote_post">Isnt Josh Howard a Small Forward? Correct me if im wrong</div> I listed all the players classified as forwards except Finley and Abdul-Wahad because they are listed as guards as well as forwards. He might be a small forward however even if he is, Dallas still has an abundance of big men.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting dexter:</div><div class="quote_post">However does Dallas need any more big men? </div>The question should be - "However does Dallas need any more players?". Dallas is loaded everywhere. You could make a case for them being over-loaded at point guard with Steve Nash, Travis Best, and Tony Delk. Delk is a terrific player and is still in great shape. Just two or three seasons ago he racked up fifty points. He's had starting experience on two great NBA teams, the Suns and the Celtics, and he has barely seen the light of day thus far on the Mavericks. If they trade Best it will give Delk an opportunity to get some playing time, and it will also give them more front-court depth. Is there really such a thing as too much front-court depth? What if Jamison get's injured, traded, or doesn't resign? Who would you turn to? Melvin Ely would be their safety. He's still a project as he was only drafted two or three years ago. He hasn't even begun to reach his potential. You could look back on this trade (if it goes through) ten years from now and wonder why the Clippers would trade such a great young player for an old veteran.
I think Ely will blossom into a strong contributer off the bench wherever he is. However, if he hits the boards hard, he'll get more playing time in Dallas than in Clipperland, where they already have a bevy of power forwards that are better than him.
Not sure how Dallas go wrong with this trade to be honest. Best is a bit player at best, and they add a young guy who could blossom. If he doesn't, then no big loss, but if he does they'll have gotten a great deal.
Well, the loss for Dallas is that they lose their only true backup point guard. Delk is a shoot first type point, whereas Best always looks to dish first. I think if Nash got hurt Don would play Best at the 1 over Delk. And if Best got traded, he'd have to use Walker in the point-forward role more. But if that's a chance that they're willing to take, then they should jump at the opportunity.

Bottom line is when you're a powerful team like Dallas, it's probably not worth hanging onto someone like Best if it gives you the opportunity to add a young guy who can blossom. Personally I think Delk would get the nod over Best too, but often it depends on matchups.
You guys are looking at all this from the Mavs point of view, but I would like to know, how in the world does this help the Clippers?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Purple N Gold:</div><div class="quote_post">You guys are looking at all this from the Mavs point of view, but I would like to know, how in the world does this help the Clippers?</div> They need a point guard with experience. Many times this season they have lost their way because of no true point guards that have experienced big and close games.Thats what they need and an experience point guard to run the team is exactly what they need. The mavs need a banger inside plain and simple.Thats what they are missing. So this trade helps out both.Ely is stuck playing behind Brand,Ely,Wilcox,Kaman and Drobjak. So he will never find any consistant players in L.A
