That's the only thing that I don't like about Baron's game right now. With the new scheme in New Orleans, everyone has the green light to jack up as many bombs as possible. That might work on some nights when BD and Wesley get hot, but when their shots are off it can be ugly. I agree, Baron is one of league's best at getting to the rack and creating shots for his teamates, he needs to do it much more often. Forget about the threes.
It has to be Baron. He has lead his team to a great record and is playing quite spectacular. The numbers don't lie.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting allnet:</div><div class="quote_post">Come playoff time I know what point guard I would rather have. Jason Kidd..without a doubt. He has led his team to back to back NBA finals appearances while being a triple double threat every night.Still not confident that Baron Davis will produce when it matters. The fact Baron has great skills at attacking the basket yet settles for 10 three-pointers a game is very odd and stupid.</div> Come playoff time, I dont think there is anyone who would take another PG over Jason Kidd. The question is not who is the best PG in the league, but which PG is playing the best this year. Kidd is the best PG, however Baron is having the best year up.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting dexter:</div><div class="quote_post">The question is not who is the best PG in the league, but which PG is playing the best this year. </div> Baron has good stats so far and is leading his team well. But Kidd is the better PG and is playing like it.All Baron Davis is doing is playing very good on offense....Kidd is still doing everything better as a point guard Don't get all caught up in Baron's great scoring and suddenly think he is doing the better job at PG.Kidd's job isn't to score while Baron needs to. Overall as a player Baron is having a better season but for being the better point guard at this stage I would still say Kidd. That opinion likely won't ever change.
These are the top point guards in both East/west West 1)Steph* 2) Sam Iam 3) Payton East 1) Kidd 2)Davis 3)Billups or Snow its a toss up, Maybe even James. Steph is the best point in the West based on talent & he has great games but he doesnt make winning plays. He didnt do it in New Jersey, He did it a little bit last season but this year he back to the same old Steph. And his shot selection at big moments of close games can be questioned.
my rankings for this year so far: 1. kidd - he's my perennial choice. this guy gets it done, period. without him the nets wouldn't even be close to where they are at right now, even though its not where people expected them to be. by the way, he's dishing 10 dimes a game this season. 2. davis - yes, his shooting percentage is a problem, but who cares when his team is winning? however, once the hornets start slumping, and they will at some point during the season, guess where the finger pointing is gonna target? thats right, the man who hoists up 10 3's a game. 3. lebron - that's right, lebron. over the past few games, including the performance on christmas day and the most recent game which he was an assist shy of his first triple-double, lebron has convinced me that he's the future of the NBA. and the cavs are following his suit as they are starting to win with some consistency. early knocks that he couldn't shoot have been erased, and he's proven his worth like no player his age ever has. ever. lebron's statline tells the story: 20-6-6. 4. cassell - this man has been tearing it up since he's landed in minnesota. i thought the wolves made a mistake in taking hudson out of the starting lineup, but cassell's incredible offensive game has made him the perfect compliment for garnett. and it has shown; garnett is having another career-defining season. 5. eric snow - marbury? nash? payton? no way. this is a ranking in which the player's worth to his team outweighs overall skill which the forementioned guards have an advantage. snow is possibly the most underrated player in the league. he is a good sized 1 who plays stalwort D and is a great distributor with the ball. the perfect compilment to iverson on the wing. this season, his shooting has gone a little down, but his worth to the sixers has not.

You can't go wrong with B-Diddy or Kidd. Kidd is going to do the same thing every year, put up triple double like numbers, and lead his team to victories(which will hopefully start to happen more often). Baron Davis comes to suprise though, how he is stepping up and playing a all around type game while leading New Orleans to wins also, I'll call him the new 'Jason Kidd'. I have to go with Baron this year so far, but like I said, can't go wrong with either. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting hoopsallusionz:</div><div class="quote_post">5. eric snow - marbury? nash? payton? no way. this is a ranking in which the player's worth to his team outweighs overall skill which the forementioned guards have an advantage. snow is possibly the most underrated player in the league. he is a good sized 1 who plays stalwort D and is a great distributor with the ball. the perfect compilment to iverson on the wing. this season, his shooting has gone a little down, but his worth to the sixers has not.</div> I don't think you can look at it this way, NBA is about skill. And what kind of player is Snow without Iverson? A nothing on offense, and a great defender. Nash, Marbury, Payton are stars on any team no matter what kind of situation they are put in. Snow's worth to the Sixers team is nothing right now, even if Iverson was back and playing, you can't take a guy like Snow over all-stars.
sorry to pull a clinton, but i have to clarify what i think the definition of "best" is when it was used in this thread's title. when i ranked the best point guards, i used the criteria of a player's skill plus their worth to a team. if this thread was titled "most talented point guard" or something of that sort, snow would be nowhere on that list.

Billups takes horrible shots doesnt run the Pistons offense well at all. Thats why the pistons cant score on a consistent bases. Crawford doesnt even really play point guard, the bulls play both him & Kirk in the back court at the same time, Crawford is used more as a scorer. And before pipen got injured he was playing more point guard than Crawford. And Lebron James I gave him a maybe Iam not convinced that he really is a point guard. He makes alot of spectacular plays but he doesnt always make the smart play it will take some time before I consider him a top eastern conference point guard. So all the people you named are better scorers than Snow but none are better defenders or point guards
Crawford is the 2 guard now, Hinrich is the point. That backcourt has played amazing at times. I love the shooting and passing of Hinrich and the natural scoring ability of Crawford, great combo.

So we actually agree on something, finally.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Henacy:</div><div class="quote_post">I think that was exactly the same point I made about Crawford. So we actually agree on something, finally. </div> Yeah, not the end of the world after all mate.
Jason Kidd is the best so far, for sure. He's always the leader on offense, every season including this one. He also can run back and defend, and he rarely makes mistakes. Didn't he just get a triple-double against the Pistons? He's dominating this year.
Jason Kidd (you know I'm going to say that) is the best PG this year. Baron may be a better scorer (he better be coz he's shooting 3pt bombs after bombs) but Kidd is the perfect epitome of a PG. I mean, how can Jefferson score all those points without Kidd? Plus, a league-leading 6 triple-doubles this year. That has count to something.
Andre Miller, Jason Kidd, and Rod Strickland are actually the best PG's in the game at their best, they do what a PG is supposed to do, not take 22 shots a game (Baron Davis), 10 3's a game (baron Davis), attempt most shots on ur team when u shouldnt (Chauncey Billups), cannot make ur team better wherever you go (Marbury). Things to be taken into consideration is having good shot selection, looking to pass first, making good passes, making ur teammates better, and no one does it like those 3, sure Strickland is washed up, but can anyone argue with his game?

They said the names Cassell & strickland came up just about every time(April '00 issue with Vince on the cover for all you none believers). So I will give you Rod Strickland but Andre Miller doesnt take alot of shot because if you havent noticed he cant really shoot. He couldnt shoot at the University of Utah, He couldnt shoot on the Cavs or clippers. And as for him making teams better when was this. Granted the Nuggets have been a nice western conference surprise & Millers has a part in that. But I think Melo has a bigger part. And Voshon Lenard, who is having a career resuring year averaging over 16pts per. And little Earl has been the one making big 4th quarter plays at that point guard spot this season. I mean Miller is a solid point but to say he better than steph is a big stretch. but your right steph hasnt made teams better in NJ or with the Suns. but the same can be said about Miller with the Cavs & Clippers. And as for J.Kidd, you will never hear me take a rude shot at my man. but I will say this he shoots 38% from the field so he better have great shot selection.

In '02 he notched two triple doubles against the Magic, and then matched up favorably with Jason Kidd. The only reason the Hornets lost the series was because Jamal Mashburn was out and Jamaal Magloire received a questionable suspension after McGrady flopped on a drive to the hoop. In fact, I think if Mash and Baron had been completely healthy the past two years, we'd be talking about the Hornets' two straight trips to the Finals, rather than the Nets'. And about BDiddy not being a complete package at the point, WHAT!?! The guy shoots a lot because he is the best scorer with Mashburn injured. He is 2nd to Kidd in assists, but scores much more than him. He is doing what it takes to win, and in doing so is winning more than Kidd is, despite Kidd's team being healthy. As I pointed out with the PAR statistics, Baron is better than Kidd all-around. And although it doesn't show up in box scores, his defense against opposing pg's is among the best in the league(as is Kidd's). At least this year, I feel that its a hand's down effort to say Davis is the best point guard. ps <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Don't get all caught up in Baron's great scoring and suddenly think he is doing the better job at PG.Kidd's job isn't to score while Baron needs to. </div> If Martin or Jefferson got injured, do you really think that Kidd would score more than 20 ppg, even if he needed to?
^^Great post starman! <div class="quote_poster">Quoting Henacy:</div><div class="quote_post">Granted the Nuggets have been a nice western conference surprise & Millers has a part in that. So is Boykins, Camby, Nene, Barry, Anderson, and Lenard. Denver's success can't be pointed to one player, this team plays some of the best team basketball in the league, and probably the best if you combine offense and defense. Where does this all start, with the starting point guard, Andre Miller, not the scoring finisher Carmelo Anthony that is shooting .390% from the field. Miller also led the league in assists 01-02 dishing out 10.9 a game for one of the worst teams in the league. Miller also went crazy in the NCAA Tourny while at Utah, and has a few medals to his name as well. I always got your back Andre!
Cassell and Davis Just look at their stats and where their teams are. Cassell is averaging 7.4 assists per game and scoring as well with over 20 a game. He is one of the main reasons the Timberwolves are on their recent surge. Davis, well you can argue he is the best point guard in the eastern conference. (sorry kidd lovers) He is leading in steals, he is 3rd in assists, and is averaging over 23 points as game. Not to mention he is leading his team quite well with teh absence of Mashburn. They both have their teams in 2nd in their respective divisions.
