What exactly is the definition of being cluth? What defines it? We hear it all the time that such and such guy is 'clutch'. Do you define clutch as being able to do the impossible at the last second? Or is it being able to perform under amazing pressure? Or is it the fact that everyone knows who the ball is going to,yet no one can do a damn thing about it? What exactly is everyone's defining statement about what being 'clutch' really is?
I think clutch is being able to knock down shots when there needed badly, like you mentioned being able to perform under pressure. If you can hit a J 20 feet out with a guy guarding u like glue and 5 seconds left in the game, thats clutch.

I myself think clutch is a term to describe a player whom is stolid(reliable) and who you can risk taking the shot or responsibility for a win in a small amount of time. Take Larry Bird for example, he could catch up or take over so quickly. It's a player whose seriousness and tenacity dominate the game. Reggie being a perfect example of tenacity. Being able to conquer under such enormous amounts of pressure.
Being clutch is being able to hit the big shot when it is needed. Your able to clear your mind of everything and see you as being the only one there. Almost as if you are practicing in your own driveway. Your able to hit the 3 ball as time expires without being desturbed, nervous, scared, etc.
I figured I would see this. It is not about scoring. Clutch can be just forcing your man to make a pass, stealing the ball, getting a huge block late, forcing your man to call a timeout. Long as you get the job done late by elevating your overall play in the games most crucial moments is clutch.

That's what most people think of when they think clutch. But as you said, it's any factor or crucial play you make late in the game that helps your team get that win.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Joel-33:</div><div class="quote_post">Yep what he said, Reggie Miller defines clutch and he only missed one game tier, once in his career!</div> Reggie Miller is one of the greatest clutch shooters ever, but come on, he's missed more than one game tying/winning shot. Clutch to me is being able to make big plays when needed most. It doesn't neccessarily have to be a shot, but it could be a pass or a defensive play. EDIT: I failed to read the whole thread...pretty much what KJ said but his is more specific...I didn't mean to sound redundant
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Lostmyluggage:</div><div class="quote_post">I looked up 'clutch" in a dictonary and there was a pic of Jordan. </div> We must have the same dictionary.

I don't know, when I looked it up it said something about car parts... j/k But seriously, I think KJ hit the nail on the head. And Jordan, West, Bird and the other clutch performers did all that, the offense, defense, everything. Its an overall elevation of play in close situations, whether its the last few seconds or last few minutes, or even a series deciding game.
Clutch is nothing specific but it involves everything in basketball universally. Clutch is doing the things needed to help your team win the game. Whether it is scoring, defending or even talking to your players and making them believe, clutch is all about doing everything in your power to help your team win. Jordan ultimately defines this for me, the one thing about him that sticks in my mind is his last finals against Utah. Making the steal and winning the game with the push on Bryon Russell....he is clutch defined

I was looking around at the first few replies and everyone was saying that clutch meant hitting the big shot... but Defense, Passing, Rebounding, Etc. can all be clutch too. My favorite clutch players, Kobe, MJ, AI, Paul Pierce, and used to be Robert Horry. My favorite "Misc." Clutch player: Ben Wallace and John Stockton.
