suprising SEC success in college hoops <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"><u>SEC suprises many this season</u> To the rest of the nation, the ACC is the eternal snobby country-club conference. It's the old-money elite and knows it. And if you should happen to lose sight of that fact, Billy Packer and a conga line of Tobacco Roadies are always ready to remind you. That's why the Southeastern Conference is so fired up. Because the league with a football pedigree took everything but the blueblood basketball league's trust fund last Saturday. The pertinent scores: Georgia 83, No. 3 Georgia Tech 80. Kentucky 61, No. 9 North Carolina 56. Florida 87, No. 25 Florida State 73. (LSU 21, Oklahoma 14 was a fairly popular recent score in Dixie as well. But that's with the pointed ball.) It's true that all three games were played on SEC home courts. And it's true that neither the SEC nor any other league wants any part of the two highest-ranked ACC teams -- Duke and Wake Forest. But a three-game sweep of quality ACC teams on any given Saturday is cause for celebration among arrivistes -- especially when the SEC was doubted from coast to coast before the season.</div>Link
The SEC has three problems. Their first problem is that their teams haven't exactly played the caliber schedules that the teams in the ACC, Big 12, and Pac-10 have played. Their second problem is their image. The SEC isn't exactly the best academic conference in the nation and they don't make things any better by cheating. Whether the sport is football or basketball you will always hear about the SEC schools passing players who should have failed, illegally recruiting, or whatever else your mind can fathom. The last problem is the lack of depth. In the SEC there is Kentucky, Florida, Vanderbilt, LSU, and Mississippi State (O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D). After those five teams you have the likes of South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Aurburn, Tennesse, Georgia. Pretty much all of those schools have outstanding football programs but lacking basketball programs. That's why the SEC is primarily considered a football conference and not a basketball conference. In the ACC you have Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Virginia (surprise of the year), Maryland, N.C. State, and Florida State. The two worst teams in the ACC are Clemson and Miami, and neither of them are half bad. The ACC will likely end up sending eight teams to the tournament while the SEC will send five. It looks like the ACC is better to me.
^Your biased and hate towards the SEC is nothing short of ridiculous....which is what I'd normally say. I agree and disagree with some of the things you said. The SEC has been better than the Big 10 in both sports this year. The SEC had more wins against the Big 10 in the bowls than the Big 10 had against the SEC. In basketball, the SEC has more wins vs the Big 10 than the Big 10 has against the SEC. The SEC is also 5-0 in basketball against the ACC this year (SEC has beaten NC State, UNC, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and Florida State). You love to point out the troubles in the SEC, too. No need to mention all the crap that happened at Michigan. Every team has their tough times, whether it be NCAA violations or just down-years. Also, I don't know how other schools stand academically outside of UK, but UK ranks in the top 3 in the nation in many categories of college (including Pharmeutics), so you got me there. As for the weak schedule, that's been something I've been using to bash other SEC teams apart from UK. Most of them have laughable schedules, but it's hard to consider them overrated since none of them were really rated high enough to be over or underrated. UK has nothing to signal that they're overrated and Florida has a very solid win over Arizona and a pretty good win over Florida State. Though I do think Florida is a bit overrated, beating those 2 teams is something to talk about (especially AT Arizona). Also, the ACC is by far the clear best conference, even though they haven't beaten SEC team (correct me if I'm wrong). I doubt those teams will go very far in the tourney, though, as they play very little defense, which is one of the reasons UK was able to knock off UNC for the fourth straight year.
