How can the Mavs play this guy at the 4 and 5 if he doesn't have a post game. Dirk is seven feet but his game is more like a small fowards than a PF or C. By playing this guy at the 4 and 5 the Mavs are shooting themselves in the foot because he doesn't create that inside presence that teams need especially in the playoffs. Put Dirk at the three and make a trade for a somewhat legit centre who is defensive minded(Ratliff maybe??) and the Mavs have a playoff contender. I would play the team like this: PG-Nash SG-Finley SF-Dirk PF-Walker C- Anyone defensive minded...Ratliff, Mutumbo, anyone who actually care about defense.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting ThaLord:</div><div class="quote_post">The team could play with Foyle or Bradley as a center... But Nelson refuses... Don't know why... </div> Foyle doesn't play on the Mavs but I get your point. Nelson puts out his starting five out there without a thought that they need some sort of defence out there. They need a true legit centre who will block shots and create some defence or they will be trying to outscore their opponents every time
don nelson is a complete idiot, the mavs would be so much better if he would use some common sense in managing the team. nelson definitely should start a true center in there for some defense. on another note, i think the mavs are more effective when they freelance rather than always running nelson's stupid set plays, just some food for thought.
I agree, we need to make a big trade and get rid of Bradley/filler/filler for some center.. a REAL center. Hopefully that C we singed for a 10 day will be good.
Dirk doesn't need to be an inside presence because he demands attention simply because of his size and shooting ability. He can play PF and C because he stretches the other team's defense.
and his real position is small forward so he won't be use to this position like some other players are
I'm just a traditional guy who thinks that whoever is 6'10 and higher should have some kind of postgame in his arsenal. What happened to creating an "inside" presence?? Shooting jumpers is good because it keeps the defence honest but you have to have a postgame to establish something inside. I think Garnett and Duncan are two of the best players in the game today because of that. They shoot consistent midrange jumpers but they also have complete postgame which makes them so dangerous. I just think Dirk is not PF or C because he doesn't create that inside presence that the Mavs need. He's an effective SF but doesn't do it at the PF or C.
I can agree to that. Duncan and Garnett are the two best in the game, and I feel a post game is necessary if you want to become a superstar. Of course, part of it is the way the Mavericks play - Don Nelson isn't a "fool around" guy. He and Mark Cuban want buckets. Lots and lots of buckets and scoring. Turning and facing is the quickest way to get that, seeing that posting up adds on several seconds. On a more serious note, because he does turn and face, that makes him harder to guard one on one for the other Power Forwards and Centers, because they're not used to seeing that.
Dirk does have a better than average post game, why are you saying he has nothing at all? He has a good fade away jumper, and his ability to turn and face up the defender like Crossover said is amazing because he can stroke that J over the top or use his great pump fake and drive to the basket, where he finishes very strong. Ask someone like KG how hard Dirk is to defend, no one can stop him on the offensive end.
Sorry, I'm just speaking of the times I've seen him play. I have never once seen him do a decent post move. He usually takes his guy out and takes him with the midrange jumper or drives to the basket or he gets the ball in the post and turns to face up the defender. From what I've seen he doesn't have a real "back the defender down" game like KG, TD, JO has....I'm speaking of traditional power fowards. This is what I'm talking about. I have not seen up and unders, spin moves, hook shots etc...traditional post moves which I think he doesn't have or at least hasn't used in the games I've seen. He is a 3 trapped in a 4's body. I'm speaking from a fundemental standpoint for the 4 position, which I don't think he plays. Not like the way he plays isn't effective, but I still think he should be playing the 3 instead of the 4 or 5 due to the way he plays. Call me old fashioned.
