So, what do you guys think about him? Is he a keeper? Can you see him announcing the laker games for decades like chick did? At first, I was very hard on Sunderland probably because of my love for Chick...I just wasn't ready for someone else. But as the years have gone by, I have grown to like Sunderland. I think he is doing an admirable job. He does a very good job of describing the game, probably due to the fact he had to do Chick's simocast (Chick was one of the last if not the last to still do simocast) for a year and a half. Its too bad they don't do it anymore, those Laker radio guys suck... so what do you guys think... btw...I made a thread on chick a while back and got like 1 or 2 post...damn shame...
First things first, I'd like to start this topic off with this picture. Believe that... Now back to the topic, I think this guy has a nice future with the Lakers. He is a good one, and I can see him announcing for the Lakers for years to come. Your not the only one, I couldn't even pay attention to announcing after Chick past, didn't feel the same.
I was very critical of Paul as well when he started, but now I've become a bit more used to him. I still don't think he's completely fit to be an everyday play-by-play announcer, but for now I guess he's okay. Chick did spoil us for so many years, it's such an unfair standard to try to live up to for anyone. I think Paul is improving, but if there's one thing I would like to see (or hear) is him using some different sayings and terminology once in awhile. He sometimes tends to be a little repetitive, especially with "easy play to call" and "pinch post", Stu is doing a good job bringing him along though, he should continue to improve. On the other subject, I do like Joel Myers and Mychal Thompson on the radio broadcast. Joel has that classic announcer voice, but he's also very insightful. Mychal is a little more loose, which fits well with Joel's personality. Overall, I still miss the old days of Chick & Stu on TV and radio, but then again, I always will. LA does still have a legendary play-by-play announcer though - Ralph Lawler is great with the Clippers.
^ that's a great pic... Sunderland use to do some college games here and I really didn't like him. But like I said, my opinion has changed... It's a shame that a lot of people on this board never even heard CHick announce a game. And they think they know basketball... Like Dan Patrick said, "you haven't heard a basketball game until you've heard Chick Hearn"

I guess to be completely fair, I've only listened to them two or three times on the radio - so maybe you're opinion is a bit more valid. I've heard more of them on xtra 690 than I have on the Laker broadcasts. But there will never be another radio play-by-play announcer like Chick, he painted you a picture. Everyone else pales in comparison.
I was hoping Kevin Harlan would be the voice for the Lakers. Sunderland has done a decent job, considering the enormous shoes he's had to fill, but I think Harlan has a lot more personality and calls the games similar to the legendary, Marv Albert.

He's good for tv i guess, but being use to chick, I prefer the simocast guys. I like the guys that describe the action very well. BUt that's just me....

Joel Myers sucks as an announcer...He used to do color for tha Spurs and it was so excruciating that I watched those games wit the mute button on...him and sean elliott on the same broadcast team....WOW...can it get worse?...
