stupid question but i see right now pistons with 28 wins are behind nets who have 21 wins. How does that work, the standings?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting eginobili20:</div><div class="quote_post">stupid question but i see right now pistons with 28 wins are behind nets who have 21 wins. How does that work, the standings?</div> Because the Nets are leading their division
2 teams in the same divison cannot be ranked #1 and #2, and since the Pacers are #1, the top team in the Atlantic Division has to take #2. I made a thread about this earlier, and how stupid this rule is.
hows that gonna effect next year's conference standings ... aint be unthinkable! 3 divisions with teams about the same level and then ... well ok, this is something we talk about too often already

The rule is fine... that's the reason for divisions. Next year will probably act a lot like the NFL. There will be 3 division champs, and they will be #1, #2, and #3. Also wins don't matter... currently the Spurs have 26 wins, but are behind the Lakers who have 25 wins, but that's because of loses as well, the Lakers only have 12 while the Spurs have 14... granted this won't matter in your question (as Detroit is 7? game ahead of New Jersey) but just making sure you realize it's not wins vs wins, the loses count as well. At the end of the season when every team has played 82 games, then you can say wins... but right now some teams have played a lot more games than others. Also what's the deal with having to be #2? Does the 3rd seed play the 1st seed in the 1st or 2nd round? Nope. And during the playoffs the #2 seed doesn't automatically get home court, it's whatever team has the better regular-season record. So even if Detroit gets #3, they'll play a weak team (6th in the East) and still get home court if they meet the Nets (#2)... so it's not like #2 gets special treatment, they don't get bye rounds or automatic home court... so I think the rule is fine.
Well there's only 2 reasons why I hate the rule. 1) We go against a 6th seed instead of 7th (If the standings hold up how they are right now, wich at the end of the season I believe the Pistons will be 1st) 2) Being seedeed seconds sounds better then 3rd!
Yeah, but the bottom line is that if you're ranked higher in the first round, whether you're 2nd or 3rd, you ought to be able to win your match. And when you face that higher seed, if you have more wins you still get home court advan, no matter what the seedings are. I don't see that big a problem with it.
