Vegas Kings?

I remember hearing about this a month or so ago, but I highly doubt they will move. When the Lakers played the Kings the other night, they said it was the 211th consecutive sellout at hime ( or something like that.) They have the best fans in the league, and I can't see them moving anywhere. I think Vegas would be a great place for an NBA team, but don't feel they will be the team to move there.

 

The Maloofs already own a bunch of casinos, so I guess it wouldn't be that far fetched. Vegas is also one of the fastest growing cities in the world..

 

And Las Vegas Kings is a great name also!

I don't like the sound of all these changes, NJ becoming NY, and now this. So many controversies. Thanks for sharing Shape, basketball's starting to become more business then sport.

 

I gotta admit Las Vegas Kings sure is a great name, and would sport an awesome logo :mrgreen: but I wouldn't want to see it. Las Vegas SHOULD NEVER have any pro sports team... that town combined with a sports franchise? Doesn't go well together, it's like asking Michael Jackson to babysit little Billy, it's just a big mistake, and you're asking for something to happen!!

Back to Sacramento... the reason the Kings sell out so much is because their arena holds a bit more than 17,000 people. To put that into perspective, Chicago averages 19,406 fans per home game, yet that's still less than 85% of the seats!! If Sacramento got a new arena they probably wouldn't sell out so much, yet they would have a lot more fans at each game. I think the city needs to get them a new arena, I'd hate to see the Kings move away from such a great fan base... I love how that arena just shakes with every play the Kings make. The cowbells were clever

But the problem is, the owners are having disputes with city officials about building a new arena. I think the brothers want to make a bigger one with bigger capacity...

Bigger Arena=Bigger Capacity=More People=More $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I think it's beneficially to both sides if a new arena is built to hold more fans... like I said before, it wouldn't sell out as much, but it would allow for more fans per game.

Man, that's the same reason why we can't get a football team over here in L.A.

 

Las Vegas Kings? I'm not really digging that name. And I also agree that LV should never have a sports team.

Sacramento isn't about to lose their team. Even though they're having arena problems, that's fairly commonplace in the NBA, and in other leagues. The biggest part of the controversy is basically that the city wants the ownership to pay a bigger percentage of the cost of the new arena, and the owners want the opposite. But the Maloofs are smart enough to realize that to keep such a fan base they'd better cough up.

Attendance wise, even though LV is growing rapidly, the city isn't ready to support a real big league sports team. Tourist towns rarely are. That's what the Hornets found in moving from Charlotte to NO, and partly why the Magic have low attendance right now too.

No, you got the right idea but you got some of the info mixed up...(assuming when you say "they," you mean the NFL)

The NFL wants a new stadium, which the tax payers are not willing to cover...the city of L.A. (the ones who run the city) want to renovate the Coliseum. The NFL doesn't want that...There are other ownership groups that want to build a stadium down in Carson, which the NFL would approve, but they just couldn't get everything together...a lot of ppl were against it

The MAIN reason we don't got a team was because there were too many things unsettled, too many people wanting different things, and the ppl down in Houston had everything and everyone united on one idea...they got the team, we didn't....

btw, if you meant "they" as the city, then you were right and I just wasted my time explaining

 

This is offtopic, but what year was the last that LA had a football team? I can't remember if the Rams or Raiders were last either.

They left at the same off-season if my memory serves me correctly. The difference was that the Rams had planned to move and actually did. The Trait..I mean Raiders just left abruptly with little fore-warning.

I heard we'll have one by 2008. Until then, we got USC, the real national champs...

Thanks for the info on the LA football teams.

I realize that Vegas has lots of people. They're one of the 50 largest cities in the country. But I was speaking more to the nature of that population, which is touristy. Cities like that don't stand as good a chance of attracting crowds for sports, and Vegas in particular proves to attract bigger crowds for boxing than team sports. Although XFL was a minor league team, I don't think they attracted decent crowds at all for its games.

Just me personally, i can shoot off at least three other American cities that can handle a bball team before Vegas, although LV is on my short list for expansion(if it was up to me).
