There have been rumors and speculation on wide-spread steriod use around sports. People are talking about guys like barry bonds and sammy sosa being "juiced"...Recently, Tennis great John McEnroe admitted to use of steriods (he later backtracked and said he meant something else). Also, the whole THG scandal was uncovered, and now the whole sport of track-and-field is being looked at along with football...A couple of years ago, even a Ping-Pong player was cited for steriod use...yes, PING PONG!!! My question is how rampant do you think steroid use is in the NBA. Is it more so than other sports, less than other sports, or about the same... and don't kid yourself, there are probably a few ball players that use steriods...thinking there are none whatsoever would be naive...
I don't think there's that much use of steroids in the NBA. There might B, but it's hard to tell, because majority of the players are slim. U would just think of Karl Malone, but I don't even think he does. When he wrestled in the WCW for that short stint, he looks almost skinny compared to a wrestler. But that doesn't mean jack though, but I don't think there's a whole lot of steroid use in the league. Just chronic blazing.

I remember a Laker getting suspended for a game for steroid use or something in that category a year or two ago. I can't place my finger on who it was, but I remember hearing something about it.
^ It was Samalia Samake....he was a prime example of a player who doesn't look like he's on steriods, but he was... I agree, I don't think it's rampant, but i think there is more use than most of us realize...a lot of it just goes undetected...
I know it was Marijuana, but do you think Howard used them? He seems really unfit and weak if you ask me. Same goes for Anthony Mason now, I know he's older now, but he seems really weak in comparison. Rick Fox probably didn't, but he seems rather slow to me, can anyone clarify these things for me please? Thanks again.

Hard to see him in tights. I think I remembered last year on sportscenter that they were talking about that on sports, I gon't think NBA players used that.
Naw, I don't think there's any steroid use in the NBA. And if there is, it would only be among a few Power Forwards and Centers. I had to to a long 12 page research paper on steriods in sports last year, and I didn't find anything on steroids in hoops.

Anyway, Lamar Odom used them. If anyone saw him at Rhode Island then they'd know what I'm talking about. Unless he really hit the gym, he's taking steroids. And I don't see him hitting the gym; he's too busy taking other illegal substances.
If there is steroid usage, I would think it would be by those like Samalia Samake (good job notMuchGame recalling that). Those who really DO need to take something to try to be competitive and stay in the league. But if it did come out that doping was more wide spread, that might explain why it takes some of these guys months to heal from injuries that used to take weeks.
Speaking of healing from injuries slowly...has anyone noticed that Karl Malone was originaly suppose to be out only for 5 days. It's been I think almost a month. Shaq also..his injury is one that is suppose to also heal quickly.
i wouldn't be surprised if there were. athletes in so many sports have used them. why not basketball?
Basketball definitely has some steroid users. Less than baseball and football, I'd say, but definitely more than hockey. I would think somewhere in the neighborhood of 30% use them regularly. Probably around 70% have tried or used them at some point. Basketball players don't need to be big and bulky, and players like AI wouldn't need them because his size compliments his playing style. However, they do need strength. These guys are already so strong, but it's hard to think they aren't using steroids for an added edge.
I'm sure theres a handful of players out there using them. Drugs are very common, especially in sports. Steroids are used to enhance performance and improve physical appearence. With that said, I think the mediocre players are more likely to use them. Players such as KG, Kobe, and McGrady don't need that crap, they already have the talent. Theres only one true way to determine if a player is on steroids or not..And we'll keep that off the board.

I know this is just speculation, but if anything, I would think there are MORE players in the NBDL using steroids than in the NBA, just because they all are trying to make it to the big show.

I know for a fact that NBA players all over the league take Creatine...it's legal and all, and you can buy it anywhere, but it's similar to steriods....It would be hard for me to believe that a few guys wouldn't try to take it another step and do anabolic steriods...I think maybe about 10% of the league does steroids...
I saw this today on ESPN.com "NBA puts THG on banned substance list" This article also lists all the banned substances in the NBA...very interesting... <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">NBA players received an official memo from the league this week announcing that the designer steroid THG will be officially classified as a banned substance starting next season, ESPN.com has learned. League spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the new policy Friday, saying: "The NBA and the NBA Players Association have agreed to add THG and gestrinone to the banned-substances list under the league's anti-drug policy beginning with the 2004-05 season. Formal tests for THG, also known as tetrahydrogestrinone, will start in training camp next October. The steroid has caused widespread scandal in the track and field community, but one Western Conference All-Star told ESPN.com that he would be surprised to hear that NBA players are using the drug. "This is still too much of a skill game," said the player, who requested anonymity. "I don't think most [NBA] players would even think that steroids can help them."</div> Link to Full Article
