The Dallas Mavericks want Scott Williams. Scott Williams wants to play for the Dallas Mavericks. The next few days should determine whether the Mavericks and Williams get what they want. With the Phoenix Suns putting all their focus on young players, Suns management is prepared to waive the veteran power forward so Williams, 35, can join a contender in the West. According to league sources, Williams wants to be waived as long as he ends up with the Mavericks. Full Article: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/stor...marc&id=1720587
Very nice pickup for the Mavs, considering Williams' veteran experience, winning experience, size/skills, and his low price tag. He should help immediately, though I'm not really sure if he's gonna have a legitimate chance of starting on a Don Nelson team. It's almost like Don despises tough rebounding and trenchwork, and that we'll only see Scotty coming off of the bench. How long he comes off for depends on his conditioning and chemistry with the Mavs.
More options for the Mavs: Among the centers and power forwards being considered in that range are Indiana's Primoz Brezec, Washington's Brendan Haywood, Toronto's Jerome Moiso and Orlando's Steven Hunter. A player who has a minimum salary, such as Miami's Loren Woods, could also be added without swapping someone off the roster. Other frontcourt players beyond the trade exception limit who interest the Mavs are Memphis' Jake Tsakalidis, Milwaukee's Joel Przybilla and New York's Michael Doleac. To acquire a player beyond the exception, the Mavs would have to match salaries in a trade. Full Article: http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/basketba...cks/7806488.htm
Yeah it will be a nice addition-rebounding and a big man who can step out and shoot. What they desperately need however is a low post scorer who can initiate offense inside.

Any form of more defensive ability for the Mavs is great news. I was thinking that they should get Oakley even if he is slow.
Dallas has a history of signing useless big men. Look at Shawn Bradley, Lafrentz etc. I think Scott Williams will work out but the minimum-contract guys above won't work. They're all unproven players who have not had a lot of playing time, and I don't think that Don Nelson would want to play them.
Williams is a guy who has both size and can bang. That's something that most Mav's big men lack, at least one of those things. They have either one or the other, whereas Williams provides both. Still, I'm not sure that he's necessarily the solution that the Mavs need, at least not long term.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting franchise3:</div><div class="quote_post">I'm sure the Mavs would try to sign Eric Dampier or Rasheed Wallace this offseason.</div> I'm not so sure about that. Dampier will probably end up with the Logo in Memphis. Wallace... maybe in Dallas.

Are they picking up a poor mans Danny Fortson? Dallas picks up Scott Williams. Is anyone here thinking what I'm thinking? Whoop-de-damn-doo. IMO I don't think this acquisition really helps them with anything other than having a crowded roster. If you are going to take a swing then swing for the fences. This does not address their problems by far, and if they think that getting a bench player who isnt in shape yet is going to help the team already crowded with power fowards(at least they think they are pfs)?? Second Round and out this year.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting CourtVision:</div><div class="quote_post">Whoop-de-damn-doo.</div> I'm with you on this one. They already have loads of big men. They just don't know how to fully utilize it.

Fortson has weight, but size in the NBA is weight and height, and Fortson is woefully lacking in height. Thus, he doesn't fit the bill.

Not only was I talking about Danny Fortson but is another power foward what the Mavericks are lacking right now? Sure he bang, and bangs(sorry for the Ricky Martin) but is acquiring another power foward that "bangs" and rebounds really solving their woes? Like I said, when swinging, swing for the fences and this transaction is pretty useless IMO.
