I just wanted to know what you think about the qualities you need to have in a player to be a great shooter.
First, I think you don't need to have a 3pt range to be a great shooter.Look at Sam Cassell he doesnt have a 3pt range but has a deadly mid range.
You need a soft hand to hold the ball gently but firmly like Glen Rice. You also need a good shooting form like Sam Cassell. You need to be like Drazen Petrovic was the best-conditioned shooter. You need stamina to hit shots even if your tired. And u need to make shots for yourself and a fast release like Allen Iverson. Finally, you need to be a clutch player. You need a good mentality.Make big baskets.

    So whats your opinions?

As I was reading your post and looking at how you showed different qualities, I noticed that you left out Richard Hamilton. Where is the love man? Deadly mid range? He has that. Clutch? Look at the game against Toronto.

He fits almost everything that you said.

I would think that the post important thing is confidence, a shooter needs confidence or else he isn't going to be shooting the ball. So like you said, a good mentality. He needs to be looking to score and always want to get the big shot.

I think a great shooter is ray allen, everything about him. Ray Allen is a straigth shooter, his form is perfect. Peja has a weird form, but its pure. A Great shooter is someone that can shoot greatly night in and night out. From anywhere on the court. I wouldn't really look at Sam Cassell as a "Shooter" but he has a great shot. If you are entitled a shooter, it usually means you can launch it from the three. A great shooter is someone who can get the ball in the basket with a high % from anywhere on the court.

A quick release is needed of course, but shootin a high % from anywhere on the court, at anytime any play is key. If you are a great shooter, your free-throw % will most likely be high cuz it will come naturally.

To be the ideal, classic shooter, you have to:

    1) Have 3-point range...be dependable and consistent to stretch defenses with your jump shot...

    2) Midrange game...be able to come off screens, fake and shoot or pull up on the break from 15-20 feet...be cash money on these shots so that you are a triple threat anytime...

    3) Catch and shoot...be able to catch and shoot on the break, halfcourt sets, etc...important so that defenders have to stay attached to you at all times...this also requires having a quick release, which is a must because if you're a great shooter, chances are that defenders wont allow you any room...

    4) Pick and curl...be able to come off screens and utilize teammates to get open...a quick release also plays a huge role in this...be able to time your defender well and know how to get into openings for your jumper....

    5) Be a great free throw shooter...around 80-88%...make defenses loathe to put you on the line, which means they cant play you as aggressively on offense...

These, imo, are the essential qualities to being a great shooter...some ideal shooters who fit this category: Peja Stojokavic, Ray Allen, Allan Houston, Reggie Miller...

Sam is a shooter, he is just a mid range shooter. And he stretch his range when he needs too. Sam shoots a high % from the field every year just like Peja & Ray. They just stretch there range throughout a game more than sam does. But in the 4th Sam is as deadly from 3pt land as well.

Great shooters have to be like Iceman or Reddick. They have to have no fear, meaning they'd be very clutch because of this. A quick and accurate release is always good. Simply being dependable and making the open shots as well as those under pressure. Anyone who really adds to the team through their offense in any means and any way possible. Ray Allen comes to mind, since he doesn't really have any defense.

sam doesn't have the range from the 3? He's shooting over 40% this season... that's a high percentage! The quality of a great shooter is confidence and the attitude not afraid to fail... i guess all the other things such as release and shooting forms are craps... doesn't matter what style you use really, as long as you feel comfortable with it, use it. Look at Peja, he's shooting it weird, look at Marion (maybe the worst-looking shooting form I've ever seen) but they just put the ball down. <In one summer game (VC Charity All Star, I guess) Marion scored 63 pts, making 11 threes! So this guys can really shoot it from outside> The ultimate shooting form may be Michael Jordan's, or Ray Allen's, or even Kobe's... they're just beautiful to watch and the shooting forms work for these guys but they might not work for us...
