I'm sure everyone is aware of the evolution of the flagrant foul...as recent as the early 90's, guys would basically tackle each other and that would be considered a good "hard foul"... Since then, the NBA has cracked down and now, a foul that leads to a hard fall usually constitutes to freethrows and the ball... So what do you guys think...is the evolution of the flagrant foul good, bad, or indifferent for the game....
well,we can all thank Lambeer,Salley,Mahorn,Rodman and the rest of the Bad Boys for this...the League instituted the flagrant foul in direct correlation with the Pistons and they way they played.
I think it's good for the game of basketball because it prevents players from seriously injuring other players.

It was legal when they were doing it. Doesn't matter if the league instituted it because of them. We still have the chamionships.

Back in the day playin' the Pistons was like walkin' thru 5 muggers. They not only beat people they punished 'em. Many times Money walked outta Detroit bleedin' from cuts and busted lips because of the Pistons' style and the infamous 'Jordan Rules'......The mid 90's Knicks were a lesser version of Chuck Daly's Bad Boys....
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Tha Franksta:</div><div class="quote_post">I think it's good for the game of basketball because it prevents players from seriously injuring other players.</div> You don't think maybe it makes players tenative on defensive...Personally, I get angry everytime the opposing team gets a three point play... I realize the intentions of the league are good, but I think they have really overkilled with a lot of the calls....
One of the reasons people watched the Pistons so much is because they liked watching the aggressive style of play and admired the way they would't give up no easy baskets... while the league should try to reduce the number of hard fouls, I think they've gotten to the point where every time a really hard foul is committed, it results in a flagrant or even more for the player (sometimes suspension, fines..). They shouldn't be whistle-happy.
Another example of this tonight...Shaq fouls Stevie Francis with both his hands straight up in the air...Their bodies make contact, Francis has a hard fall, and they refs call a flagrant foul....Ridiculous....Shaq doesn't even hit him with any part of his arms.... How much you guys want to bet that the league will recind it within the next few days....
Shaq still knocked the hell out of him. I think it's good for the league. It's not stopping guys from playing excellent defense (see Rockets, Spurs, healthy Lakers, Pistons, Indiana), just from "cheating" by taking advantage of fouls. You'd be less tenative on offense if you knew the defenders were better at football than basketball.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Crossover:</div><div class="quote_post">Shaq still knocked the hell out of him. </div> That's due to a difference in size...by rule, that's not a flagrant foul....like I said, I'm sure it will get recinded tomorrow...but its ridiculous that fouls like that get called in the first place..
My problem isn't with the rules themselves. Its still the biased calls on part of the refs. Refs have been calling Flagrants on hard fouls that really were not intentionally "hard". Sometimes a guy gets caught off his feet getting fouled and gets rocked. Then you have instances like last night where Shaq basically b!tch slapped Yao in the back of the head. While a foul was called....it should have been a flagrant. Yao wasnt injured or anything....but it was an intentional frustrated move on Shaqs part.
