We all know that college basketball uses the possession arrow instead of the jump ball to determine possession...a lot of people have called for a change including myself...It's ridiculous to me how a defender can make a great play, and all that happens is a reset in the clock (well, half the time anyway)..This can be especially frustrating when that great defensive play comes at the end of the game. So what do you guys think...is there a postive aspect to the possession arrow rule?
First off, the officials should let the players battle for the ball a bit longer than they do. I'm not sure how long they wait untill they blow the whistle now, but it would make the game more interesting if players were allowed to wrestle eachother a bit longer before they call jump ball. Second of all, there have been a lot of games lost over the stupid possession arrow and I really want it to go. I am not sure if the jump ball is the answer though. I also hate it when 5'10" guys go up against 7'0" guys. If the jump ball is used then the teams should be able to pick the players who jump.
I am against both personally. I am a big believer that every jump ball should go to the defense. I mean if you played bad enough on offense that the defense got a jump ball call, I think they should be rewarded. Give all jump balls to the defense as a reward for playing good defense. I also think the refs need to wait a big longer to call the jump ball. For instance last night, one of our players blocked the shot over another's head and they called it a jump ball because he cam from behind and for that 1/10th of a second they both had it. I think they should wait a good two to three seconds to blow the whistle unless their is like wresting going on for it.
dexter: You are absolutely right. There is nothing I love better in the college game than when a defensive player ties up the ball, making an extremely scrappy play to get his team the ball. I also agree that the refs should determine that the two players are actually sharing possession of the ball before blowing the whistle.
