Celtics are interested in Brent Barry

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Celtics may have another move up their sleeve. In what may be a shot in the dark, sources on both coasts say the club has spoken to Seattle about guard Brent Barry, who will be a free agent after this season.

Celtics head of basketball operations Danny Ainge wouldn't confirm the contact yesterday, but others say the C's do like Barry's abilities at the point (he's a nice passer and a 41 percent career shooter on treys - 44 percent this season). And even if nothing gets worked out before the Feb. 19 trade deadline, it is likely the Celts will make a pitch to Barry when he becomes free this summer.

Barry, currently out 5-6 weeks after breaking the ring finger on his right hand, makes $5.4 million this season. Considering the marketplace, the 32-year-old will be looking at something in the mid-level exception range (slightly less than what he's getting now) when he is available.

Mihm as some bait? I like Chris Mihm personally.. Sure Brent would be a great addition and really boost the Celtics for sure when he gets back from injury, but out of all the Centers they have... I am not sure I would give away Chris Mihm.. Maybe if teams held onto him, he could do some good.. Give the guy a chance, they could get Barry in the offseason, then be a pretty big East Team next year..

I really like Brent, but he doesn't fit with this team that already has a log jam at guard. Where will he fit into the rotation? With Welsch, Davis, Pierce, Banks, and James, there's no room for another guard.

He would be the starting PG. James isn't a real passer, and they probably think Barry would do a better job at the spot. I like James as a shooter off the bench, but thats about it. For now I think they should be trying Banks as their strating PG.

This sounds like a great idea, some instant offense from a very unselfish player. It'll be great to see how he'd fair teaming up with such a great shooter like Pierce. Barry's a good PG in my eyes, he moves well, passes well, is pretty fast and is unselfish. I say go for it.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">``One thing that we do have that has been discussed is Chris Mills' contract, which is a situation where a lot of people would like to get that and get off a player's contract,'' Ainge said. ``There's a lot of teams out there hoping to be in the Kobe Bryant sweepstakes this summer and they might want to get rid of a halfway decent player - a player that can come in and contribute to us greatly. So that's one possibility.''
Asked whether he's looking for a veteran, Ainge said, ``I don't want to go get Kevin Willis or Cliff Robinson, but, I mean, I would like to get a player that would be with us for a few years. But if somebody is 30 and healthy, I wouldn't hesitate.'' </div>

I kind of like this trade

Seattle trades: C Calvin Booth (5.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.4 apg in 18.7 minutes)
SG Brent Barry (10.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 5.5 apg in 30.8 minutes)
Seattle receives: PG Mike James (10.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 4.6 apg in 30.6 minutes)
    C Michael Stewart (0.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 0.0 apg in 8.2 minutes)
    C Chris Mills (0.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 0.0 apg in 8.2 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -4.3 ppg, -3.2 rpg, and -1.3 apg.

Boston trades: PG Mike James (10.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 4.6 apg in 30.6 minutes)
    C Michael Stewart (0.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 0.0 apg in 8.2 minutes)
    C Chris Mills (0.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 0.0 apg in 8.2 minutes)
Boston receives: C Calvin Booth (5.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.4 apg in 48 games)
SG Brent Barry (10.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 5.5 apg in 40 games)
Change in team outlook: +4.3 ppg, +3.2 rpg, and +1.3 apg.

    TRADE ACCEPTED

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Danny Ainge said yesterday he is ``hopeful'' he can make another deal by the NBA's Feb. 19 trading deadline.

He zoned in on his desires, saying, ``We need a rebounder, and we need point guard help.''

The Celtics are currently near the bottom of the league rankings in the rebound categories, and they are asking a great deal from Mike James [news] and rookie Marcus Banks [news] at the point.

Ainge again wouldn't confirm Tuesday's Herald report that the Celtics have made a bid for Seattle guard Brent Barry, currently out with a broken finger, but he did speak about another aspect to that story - that Chris Mills' contract is being dangled. Mills, out for the season with an Achilles tendon injury, gets $6.6 million this year, 80 percent of which is picked up by insurance.</div>

I don't know about Boston fans but I cringe at the thought of this guy thinking of trades

I couldn't agree more, he is one lawsy head of basketball operations. I'd much rather hire Dennis Johnson.

My thoughts exactly. Next thing you know he'll trade Mihm and Welsh. He's just not thinking when he makes trades. I wouldn't want to coach for him, knowing he'd trade away all the likeable players. I don't want Barry, but if he could get a really good player I might forgive him for trading Antoine for Lafrentz. I probably won't, but maybe...we'll see what he does.

Haha! The only trades Ainge should be working on, is to beg the other GMS and retract all his previous trades.

    I don't know...

But I also heard rumors about about Shareef Abdur-Raheem for our rebounding problems, but I think he will be alittle above our heads, I think we should go for a more low profile guy who specializes in rebounds, and then for our offense/star power we can try for barry, and then if Baker some how loses his contract with the Celtics and free up some money, maybe, MAYBE...we can try for Kobe.
