I wouldn't say he has it for sure, but I think unless shomthing big happens for another contender which I don't see happening I think he has it.
I think if Garnett maintains the high level of play he has for the past year and 1/2 then he should have it locked. Unless Duncan spectularly turns in Wilt type numbers... he will be hard for him to pass Garnett's consistently high play.
He has to win the midwest division Bottom line If Duncan and the Spurs manage to go on the typical 2nd half of the season run and grab the division, It will be a 3-peat for TD

yea, totally agree with allnet, it depends on if they take the midwest or not. and i think they will. his play will do one of two things...stay at the brilliant level is been at thus far, or even get turned up a notch. i think the only thing he has going against him is a pretty strong surrounding cast. if the pacers keep dominating, and beating western conferance teams, dont be surprised to see jermaine sneek up and get some mvp consideration. without jermaine, the pacers go to the lottery
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting purehoops:</div><div class="quote_post">And do you actually see the Spurs outplaying the Wolves in the 2nd half of the season?</div> Hard to say, with the way Timmy carries his team so much every season, It isn't natural unless the Spurs go on another big run. It happens every year. Stats a side, Garnett has to lead his team to the division title and a top 2 seed to win the MVP. The voters will consider team records in this, Duncan is just as worthy for MVP, so if the Spurs have the better record come end of the season, thats who's taking the award. If Garnett does manage to win the MVP, should I expect a title in Minnesota?

I do agree that the Wolves havta maintain that #1 spot in the Midwest divison... for it to be to the closes thing to a gaurentee. So you are sayin if Wolves fall 1 game behind the Spurs (knock on wood) and Duncan clearly has inferior stats, he is still your MVP? The way the Wolves are playing... a title is very possible... these guys have more than just a first round exit in their eyes.
Why not? He's putting up consistant numbers, carrying them every night, and most importantly, winning ballgames. I think it's down to Duncan and KG for the MVP race, but I'll give KG the edge. Like allnet said, total victories could be the key.

Duncan would kill to have either Spree or Cassell by his side. Cassell makes the game that much easiler for Garnett, he is known as the 4th quarter guy and has bailed the Wolves out on many occasions this season. Duncan is playing MVP basketball right now which has been the cause of Spurs sudden winning streak. Spurs need Duncan to play his best basketball every single minute he is out on the floor, KG on the other hand can still rest and play badly, he has Cassell and Sprewell to make up for the scoring.
KG is the MVP if the Timberwolves finish ahead of the Spurs. I don't believe that they have to win the Midwest division, just beat out the Spurs. KG is clearly the MVP if you compare stats, Tim Duncan would need the Spurs to win the Midwest to have a good chance for a three peat. Otherwise, KG gets his MVP award.

Duncan is a great player and if the spurs win he has a good chance of being MVP, but just because the spurs win doesn't mean Duncan is automaticly the MVP.

That is the main reason he is a superstar... so saying Kevin Garnett can relax is irravelent because he doesnt. I never said Tim Duncan isnt playing MVP ball... but if you look at the numbers... they are clearly in Garnett favor... and I think this is was people said last season "He has less opportunities because he has more on his team"... Garnett still plays at the top of his game no matter who is on the team. Duncan is 2nd... only because of the record... I believe that will be the deciding factor in more than half the votes.

Spurs were the 1st seed, 60 wins and won the midwest division, Wolves on the other hand finished 4th and had 9 less wins That sealed the MVP votings.
They aren't going to give the MVP award to some three years in a row. It's just not done. The NBA wants variety, and this is Garnett's year. And we could also make the argument that it was his year last year. And I don't see how the Timberwolves can get worse once they get everyone back. They need a good backup point guard, and they will get that once Hudson gets back. We need a big body and another rebounder, and we get that in Olowokandi. And we could always use a perimeter shooter to dish it out to off of double teams and we get that with Wally. If we stay the same or improve, Garnett has it locked. I don't care if he doesn't win the Midwest Division, it's a matter of how important you are to your team and your level of play during the regular season. They can't or shouldn't base the MVP voting anything on except the regular season, playoffs shouldn't matter.
I agree with you twolvefan about it being wrong to base the MVP voting off of standings. However, that is how voters look at the players and nothing can be done about that. KG will win it if the Twolves continue at this pace.
I think it is far to early to judge the MVP for the end of the year. Right now it is clear that nobody has played better basketball this year than Kevin. He has simply dominated everyone put into his path. Right now the top three canidates have to be him, Duncan and Peja. The key will be whether or not Kevin can keep his numbers off and lead his team past the first round. If he can do that, I would find it hard not to give him the MVP award. The only one I see possibly getting it is Duncan and they would have to win the title for him to get it.
