There is plenty of talk about NBA busts...but who are the biggest college busts...Those are the guys who were hyped up in highschool, only to struggle at the college level.... My biggest <u>current </u> bust is Cedric Bozeman (UCLA). He is a 6'7'' point guard with smooth handles...He was suppose to be the next great UCLA point guard...And although he was replacing Earl Watson, the expections for UCLA were higher than ever. People were talking National championship...well, if you've watched UCLA recently, you know which direction the program has gone since....He's currently in his jr. season, and he's acutally leading the Pac-10 in assist, but he's still averaging about 7 ppg and is shooting horribly... My biggest bust of <u>all-time </u> is a guy named Shea Cotton...He's the younger brother of former Sonic James Cotton. I'm sure some of you guys have heard of Shea. He was the "original LeBron James" from the West Coast...The L.A. papers were running articles about him every few months. At the time, the three names going around the country were Baron Davis, Tracy Mcgrady, and Shea Cotton. Cotton was recruited by UCLA and he and Baron Davis were hyped up as possibly the greatest freshman backcourt of all-time. Unfortuantely, Cotton's test scores disqualified him from Division 1 basketball...He ended up going to Long Beach CC. and although he put up great numbers (29ppg, 55% 3pt), the damage was done and his development was stunted...He would eventually transfer to University of Alabama were he played his only year of Divison 1 ball. He played decent, no where near what was expected out of him when he was in highschool. After the season, he forgoed the last two years of his eligibility and declared for the draft...He wasn't selected, and has ever since been playing in Europe...I actually saw him play for the first time in summerleague this year with the Clippers and he did not look like the player the papers were once describing (I stayed up till 4 a.m. just to catch a glimpse of this guy)....
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting BC:</div><div class="quote_post">Luke Recker, maybe if he hadn't transfered so many times he could have reached his potential</div> wasn't he in a car crash or somethin' too?
Luke Recker's girlfriend was in a carcrash, then he dumped her. Off the top of my head - Rickey Paulding - As a Sophomore everyone predicted great things from him. He was supposed to be a lottery pick or an All-American. He'll still be drafted and placed on a Big 12 team, but he won't reach the expectations everyone had for him. Doug Wrenn - He had one of the best Sophomore years in the NCAA at Washington. He was predicted to be a lottery pick and a future All-American. He left early, wasn't drafted, and never achieved any awards. Chris Jeffries - All hype, no productivity. Kelvin Torbert - H.S. Player of the Year in 2000 (Sporting News). He isn't even the sixth best player on Michigan State right now. I can only give you recent names. I've always followed college ball, but I only got into the recruiting aspect about four to five years ago.
I almost forgot...how about Ronald Curry...He was suppose to be the next great 2 sport athelete...He was voted by many magazines as the best highschool point guard in the country, as well as QB. He only played one season of basketball at UNC due to injuries that occured in football, and he eventually gave up basketball...
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Wave:</div><div class="quote_post">Luke Recker's girlfriend was in a carcrash, then he dumped her.</div> Nah playa I'm pretty sure he was in it too...cut up his face kind bad..I'm pretty sure...
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">University of Arizona basketball recruit Luke Recker remained hospitalized but in good condition last night after being injured in a car crash this weekend that left his girlfriend paralyzed and the driver dead. </div> http://wildcat.arizona.edu/papers/92/156/11_1_m.html We're both right. His girlfriend was paralyzed, and then he dumped her for it.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Wave:</div><div class="quote_post">http://wildcat.arizona.edu/papers/92/156/11_1_m.html We're both right. His girlfriend was paralyzed, and then he dumped her for it.</div> damn, standup guy eh?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Big Nasty:</div><div class="quote_post">damn,standup guy eh?</div> Yeah, he's sure made a lot of enemies along the way. They hate him at Indiana, Arizona, and even somewhat at Iowa. Out of the Reggie Evans/Luke Recker duo, I always prefered Evans. Evans is a headcase too though. His Senior year he killed the Hawkeyes when he was suspended for cutting class. Both players weren't drafted but have what it takes to make it in the league.
What about Chris Duhon? Last year on nbadraft.net he was compared to Isiah Thomas and now Howard Eisley.
IMO, Duhon has had a solid career...He's probably underachieved a bit, but I wouldn't call him a bust...
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting AzBalla17:</div><div class="quote_post">He has been solid but he was supposed to be the next great Pg after Jay Williams left.</div> Well, he actually played a couple of years alongside Jason Williams...and most people got a good look at him and knew he wasn't going to be a great player, even with Williams gone... Like I said, underachiever maybe...but not a bust IMO...He's the starting pointguard and the unquestionable leader of the #1 team in the country...that aint too shabby
C'mon now...Duhon isn't a bust. He was thrust into a role he wasn't ready for last year but he has rebounded extremely well this season and is the unquestioned leader of the Duke Blue Devils....
I wouldn't call Duhon a bust, as his play is helping the Blue Devils now. Recker never lived up to the hype surrounding him, and Chris Jeffries was a bust at both levels.
No way Duhon is a bust. Just because he is unselfish, and rarely looks to shoot, doesn't mean he is a bust. He will finish his career right next to some of the great PGs in Duke history. If he wanted to put up points, he could probably average 18 a game.
