I am surprised no one has commented about this. What are your thoughts. I think they should have been penalized more but thats just me. I have pasted what I feel are some pertinet comments from an article on ESPN/com. the Broncos organization was fined $950,000 by the league, and ordered to forfeit a third-round pick in the '05 draft, for cap violations that occurred 1996-98. It marked the second time in three years that the Broncos were deemed culpable of cap shenanigans, Seems that once again Denver is getting off pretty light. Five years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost a third-round pick after the team self-reported itself for a cap violation owner Pat Bowlen even conceded the cap inventiveness by his team was "brought to my attention" by the league. There was no comment from major domo/head coach Mike Shanahan, who oversees everything but the shuffling of paper clips in the Denver front office. It says here that, for a second violation, the Broncos got off with little more than a wrist slap. Then again, that isn't too surprising, given that Bowlen is such a power broker in the league, serves on key committees, and is viewed as pretty cozy with commissioner Paul Tagliabue. >>>kudos to Al Davis for outing a franchise that likes to pretend it's squeaky clean. And this final thought: Had it been the Raiders who committed the cap fraud, would Davis' team have escaped with such benign sanctions? <<< Cap circumvention, as Davis has reiterated, strikes at the integrity of the league and is a major indiscretion.
wow they just took action for this now when it happened 6 years ago. did i miss something or is the league procrastinating
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>kudos to Al Davis for outing a franchise that likes to pretend it's squeaky clean.</div> Just another day in the life of "The Godfather". Will anything ever tarnish the image of Elway??? Stay tuned Al fans... Same Al time, same Al channel. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>And this final thought: Had it been the Raiders who committed the cap fraud, would Davis' team have escaped with such benign sanctions?...</div> The question that didn't need to be asked? <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Cap circumvention, as Davis has reiterated, strikes at the integrity of the league and is a major indiscretion."</div> ... And he continued on to say that "this is what happens when you put a lawyer in charge of the league...." And through in that last little bit myself.
i also feel as if they shopuld have been penatalized more and had a 1st taken away what im thinkin is if they vcouldve gotten away with it then who else is gettin away with it now
Peter King of CNNSI/com summed it up best; "I think the Broncos deserve a harsher penalty than being docked a third-round pick for cheating on the salary cap. Cheating is cheating, commissioner. It goes to the heart of professional competitiveness."
I also think the Broncos got off too light. But I do have to say that the deferred money that was being held up was for the construction of their new stadium, NOT for trying to sign big name free agents. That is why the investigation took as long as it did, they wanted to make sure what the deferred money was being used for. Al Davis better keep his mouth shut unless he intends to pay Shanahan the $200,000 he owes him, or how about the 4 million he stole from the city of Irwindale, CA.
Irwindale had it coming. That was more ink than they got since Miller started brewing there. And did you see the gravel pit they had suggested for a stadium site? Better than the toxic landfill that Carson is proposing? Tough call. If Mr. Davis owes "Shanny" any money, it should be more than offset by the amount of repairs everyone had to do after he was FIRED. Who did he think he was? The head coach? Maybe if Mr. Davis ever gets the money he has coming from the LACC he can start making payments to Mr. Shanahan. And finally... What does Mr Davis' blowing the whistle on one of the "cleanest" franchises in the league have to do with a personal dispute with Skelator? A little jumpy?
You really think Al really wanted to take his team to the city of Irwindale? What repairs were needed? Shanahan didn't get to do anything he wanted to do for the Raiders. You keep this up Chip and I won't let you take me to a Raider home game...LOL
If the cap violations occured during a season in which they won a championship, they should be stripped of those titles....cheating is cheating and there is no room for it in pro sports....give those titles to the teams that earned them, the Packers and the Falcons....and remove Pat Bowlen from the league before he tarnishes the broncos some more....award the franchise to TD4TD, atleast e wont cheat to win....
as soon as your officially announced as owner, you need to hire me....I have some ideas on how to circumvent the salary cap that will give us a real edge!!!!!!
The Broncos already know how to do that, what they need to learn is how not to get caught. When you figure that one out Beef, then you are hired right on the spot!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (td4td)</div><div class='quotemain'>You really think Al really wanted to take his team to the city of Irwindale?</div> Please. Irwindale? I don't think that he wanted to drive his team "through" Irwindale. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (td4td)</div><div class='quotemain'>What repairs were needed? Shanahan didn't get to do anything he wanted to do for the Raiders.</div> What would you do if your teenaged son put your 'Vette in reverse and backed into someone's cellar? Would you ignore the damage and pretend that the kid wasn't watching the oil gauge? Would you let your teenaged son do whatever he wanted with your 'Vette just because he had a license? <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (td4td)</div><div class='quotemain'>You keep this up Chip and I won't let you take me to a Raider home game...LOL</div> Rather go it alone? Don't take the orange & blue "Vette.
