I'm not sure on this, so now i'm asking you guys for your support. An assist is a pass to a scored basket... i'm told you get two steps? If the person you pass too scores within' two steps, you get the assist? This is prolly wrong... And whats the rule on the jump steps? You come up one foot, down two and up those two feet then you must release the ball. Correct? Instead of up one foot, and up another then releasing the ball.
An assist is a pass that leads to a basket...it doesn't neccesarily matter how many steps is taken...for example, if i get a steal and throw it up court to a player with a free path...he could take 2 or 3 dribbles and 4 or 5 steps and I would still get an assist... As for the jump steps...by rule, you are allowed two steps...it doesn't matter how many feet you take off, but you land with two feet (obviously), therefore it counts as two steps...a jump step is like two steps that's simultaneuos... When a guy takes one step, then hops, that's three steps and a travel (altho u kno them NBA refs don't always call it)..or when a guy hops, then takes another step (like shaq often does), thats also a travel... I hope this made sense...
Thanks for the info. I was going to ask the same thing. In Holland most of the time we dont get the NBA rules. Too many but this is a great way to tell it. Nice info

The movie IT is the only movie that really scared me, so thats why I said it...that clown still makes me cringe.

The NBA should also have like half asst and blocks or rebounds... Like 1/2 a sack in the NFL... If you give the ball...... Well here's an example...: GP is on the fastbreak with Kobe on the side running a 2 on 1... GP gives it to Kobe and he goes up for the dunk... Kobe instead of making it and giving GP an ASST gets fouled and shoots FT's... If he makes one... GP should get 1/2 an ASST. If he makes both, he should get 1 ASST... If it is a three-pointer and he makes all three then it would be 1 ASST, makes two 1/2 ASST, makes one 1/3 ASST. I think this is a very reasonable idea... Half rebounds can come when two players get a rebound at the same time which happens a lot... ~Out, Prime

nba definition: "Assist: A pass that leads directly to a basket." i dont know.. to me if you put the ball on the floor, it's not "directly" to the basket.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting notMuchgame:</div><div class="quote_post">I've always thought that too...but the problem is that they would have to go back and fix the record books...more guys will be averaging like 10 assist....</div> They wouldn't go back and adjust the record books, they would just make sure to begin keeping those certain records from hereon out. For example, the NBA used to not keep track of blocks in games back when Wilt Chaimberlain was in the league, and even though we don't have the stats to back it up, it's pretty much common knowledge that he is one of the most prolific blockers to ever play the game. He would have most likely held numerous blocking records that would still be standing strong to this very day if the NBA kept track of them, but they didn't.

My problem is what if say a guy like Jason Kidd breaks John Stocktons assist record with the new rules....how would we really know if he really did...we would have to put an asterik next to the record... I agree that having half an assist is better...but I think it should've been done that way from the beginning...right now, it would be too much trouble to change the rules...

Secondary assists would not be in the same category as regular assists, or primary assists. If Jason Kidd had a game where he had 10 regular assists and 5 secondary assists, he would not get 15 assists, he would get 10 regular assists and 5 secondary assists. Primary and secondary assists would be seperate categories just like blocks and steals are two completely different categories. Having "half assists" would not be better because it would then have a huge impact on regular assist statistics. This is why the NHL has a seperate category for secondary assists instead of just making them "half assists." You can't compare it to "half sacks" like in the NFL because they are two completely different things. The only thing this would have an effect on is triple doubles and double doubles, it would make it much much much easier for a guy like KG that is capable of getting a triple double on any given to get a quadruple double, but you have to remember that the NBA faced the exact same dilema when they began recording blocks and they would be able to easily deal with it. Perhaps they would make it so secondary assists couldn't count towards a double double, triple double, etc. on grounds that secondary assists aren't significant enough to count towards such a feat.
