Ref out 3 games for Lakers-Nuggets error <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">NBA suspends Henderson; ruling helped L.A. win The Associated Press Updated: 12:17 a.m. ET Feb. 27, 2004 NEW YORK - The NBA acknowledged Thursday there was an officiating mistake in the final minute of the Los Angeles Lakers? 112-111 victory over the host Denver Nuggets. With the Nuggets leading Wednesday night?s game 111-109, a shot by Denver?s Andre Miller appeared to brush the rim and barely beat the shot clock. Teammate Carmelo Anthony got the rebound, but the whistle blew for a shot-clock violation. The officials huddled and ruled it was an inadvertent whistle, resulting in a jump ball. The Lakers won the tip, leading to Kareem Rush?s winning 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds left. NBA senior vice president Stu Jackson said there shouldn?t have been a whistle on the play. ?That call was incorrect because the ball, in fact, hit the rim,? Jackson said. ?This was an unfortunate call at a highly critical point in the game, and we very much regret the error.? The National Basketball Referees Association said the league suspended referee Michael Henderson for three games and summoned him to New York for a meeting with league officials. The group said the referee had followed NBA guidelines in making his call, but made a mistake. ?Yet rather than a traditional fine, the NBA is out-of-bounds in its actions,? said Lamell McMorris of the NBRA. Speaking before the Lakers faced the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night, coach Phil Jackson maintained that Miller?s shot didn?t hit the rim and Anthony fouled Kobe Bryant as he got the rebound. ?You just see the ball disappear below the rim,? Jackson said. ?I?ve never heard of a decision like that rendered by the league office.? A league spokesman could not immediately be reached to comment on the NBRA?s statement.</div> that's good that they penalized the ref, this is how it should be. you made a mistake in a critical time, then you get suspended. we watch basketball to see the players, not the refs running the show. Uhm, have you tried refing? (Spelling?) It's harder then it looks. Seriously, there shouldn't be punishments for a referee's mistake. This is a joke.

Considering this screwjob could cost Denver a playoff spot I say the referee being suspended is the right decision. Shame the NBA couldn't of done the same thing for game 6 of the western conference finals a few seasons ago. Now that really was a screwjob.
Everyone makes mistakes yes but this one is uncalled for. The ref should get what he's getting no doubt about it.
Damn, I didn't know refs could be suspended. In that case, this should happen every night. They didn't cost the Nuggets the game, they cost themself the game. They played horrible throghout the 4th quarter and choked on a big lead. Good effort by LA by coming back and taking it.
I dunno man... I guess the referee deserved to be suspended. But we're gonna start seeing referees being suspended for any mistake they make, that's gonna be harsh. You try being a referee, it's -filtered-ing hard sometimes. ;P You gotta make the call right there, and you're making sure that noone is in the lane for 3 seconds, the guy with the ball isn't travelling/double dribbling, the defenders are playing proper defense, the guy who shot the three pointer shot a valid shot, the fans aren't throwing things at you, and so much more at once. I referee'd for some Junior High students at this league thing... it sucked. Man, it wasn't worth the $7 an hour. Edit: Added the '-filtered-'.

If you guys were facing the Kings or something, and the refs make a really bad call, the Kings go down the floor and hit a game winning shot, your just going to say ''It's our fault for not holding the lead, it doesn't matter what the refs did.''? Yes, we blew the lead, and everyone knows if the whistle wasn't blown and we got the rebound, the game would've been over.
I said this in the NBA forum and I'll say it again here...Suspending someone for making one mistake in a line of work where mistakes are inevitable is complete BS. The NBA was out-of-line in this instance... This isn't about who won or lost...this isn't even about basketball...its a employer-employee work issue...why don't we suspend David Stern for moving the three-point line up a few years ago, or maybe we shoulda suspended Chick Hearn after he kept calling Robert Horry "Worthy"....nonsense The NBA refuses to instate the instant replay, yet they also want all calls to be perfect
The ref's wrong call was in the Lakers' favor, I'm sure you would want the ref suspended if it was in the team playing against the lakers favor.

You can't go and blame officiating when you played 48 minutes of basketball. Bad call for sure, but it would have never came to that if they didn't choke. I'm not gonna lie, I'd be pissed too, but you can't keep blamming the refs forever. Point is, the game was in Denver's hands and they blew it.
I never kept blaming the refs. The Nuggets played horrible the last 3 minutes I know, but they still should've won.

You can never say they "should have" won. Anything can happen in an NBA game, as we all know that.

Sure the lakers were on a streak but the outcome wouldn't have been this way. I guess it shouldn't matter who should've won, just that the game was fair, which it wasn't and that always makes you pity the team that got cheated.

Sure it was a horrible call, but the Nuggets have no ones but to blame but themselves. They let the game go, and in those final minutes they did not play good enough for the win. And if you saw the game, Kobe was right under the basket and carelessly tipped it as he heard the shot clock go off and the whistle by the ref, then Carmelo grabbed it. That or he thought the ball didn't hit the rim. And there is no such thing as "should've" won. What happens if the Lakers would have stolen the ball? Their are a bunch of scenarios that could have happend, the NBA is wild now days.
Can't say that he should be suspended. I didn't see the game so I can't say how bad it looked. But you can't suspend the guy. This play could have come at any time in the game and looked insignificant. Instead, it came at the end and, yes, helped the Lakers. It's one mistake...
And everyone has to be held accountable for their mistakes. Including refs. I think 3 games is a bit overdoing it but I'm glad to see that the NBA is ensuring that all of its employees have to take responsibility for their Bartman's.
i think its good because the loss could cost denver a playoff spot in the end with the slump they are going in
