I just heard on ESPN that he was suspended <u>WITH</u> pay, so all this really has become was just a PR stunt by the NBA to get the refs on their toes and so people would stop blaming the NBA for never taking action.

I honestly believe that the current referee situation in the NBA has gotten so bad to the point where the NBA was going to issue this very same 3-game suspension to the next ref that screwed up a game, and it just so happens it was the Nuggets@Lakers game.

Let me ask you guys something...instead of Denver-LA in the 4th, the played happneed in the first quarter of a Clipper-Magic game, would and should the ref have been suspeneded...I don't think so...It's a situational double-standard....

If the Magic were on the losing end of the call, I think they would have been very happy and Johnny Davis would've thanked the refs for getting them one step closer to Okafor [IMG].

Man, i'm still against them suspending the referee on one bad call. With pay, or without.

Have you tried being a referee? No referee is perfect. You can't see if a dude slaps the ball or his opponents forehead for that matter. (I know this has nothing to do withthe ball clearly hitting the rim in the DEN@LA case, lol)

As soon as we can prove that a referee makes a call because he's biased, was payed to make sure someone wins, or some stupid sht like that then I think they should take action against a particular referee. [IMG]

Wait, no one has answered my question yet... Why was Henderson the only ref suspended when there are three refs in each game ?

I was wondering the same thing. He blew the whistle and made the call, perhaps?

Because he was the one who made the call. The other 2 refs did not agree with the call and knew it was a bad call, so instead of going along with the already bad call and ruling that it was a 24 second violation and giving the ball to the Lakers, it was just determined an inadvertent whistle and thus resulted in a jump ball. A jump ball with the Lakers pretty much guarantees them possession because of a little man named Shaq.

I don't think the suspension was appropriate. Refs make bad calls all the time, and sometimes they even decide games. The only difference here is that the bad call was disputed by the other refs, and they decided to call it an "inadvertant whistle" and make it a jump ball, thereby highlighting the referee's mistake during the game. If the other refs didn't dispute it, and Laker's got the ball then I guarantee there wouldn't have been any disciplinary action.

The real problem, though, is that after the ref's decided that it was a bad call, possession should have been given to the Nuggets since Carmelo had gotten the rebound. It wouldn't be a perfect solution, but it would be much more fair then doing a jump ball. So, I'd put the real blame on all three refs who together decided for a jump ball.

He got suspended with pay, wow, does that happen in real life? Suspended with pay, anyways, I think being a ref is almost as stressful as being a coach. Well, half as stressful. Which is still quite a bit, because u get from everybody. Coaches, players, and fans. Andbody ask me to ref, heck naw, but being paid like them, yes but just would have to suck up all the complaints, and think about the ching, ching, ching $$$.

What I put in this thread in the Laker forum:

Everyone has to be held accountable for their mistakes. Including refs. I think 3 games is a bit overdoing it but I'm glad to see that the NBA is ensuring that all of its employees have to take responsibility for their Bartman's.

But you know if the mistake happened at any other time (i.e. the first quarter), there would've been no action taken...

In addition, refs are held accountable for their mistakes...they are evaluated over a season span by a head official...the ones that make the least mistakes throughout the year get to officiate the big playoff games...the ones that consistantly make a ton of mistakes are often terminated...

Of course mistakes happen left and right, but this was a BIG ASS MISTAKE THAT DIRECTLY IMPACTED THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME...so something happened. In reality nothing actually did take place, because Henderson essentially received a 3-game paid vacation leave. When players screw up, they get fined, tossed out of a game, etc. Same for coaches. Doesn't publicly happen for refs (at least not until now). A statement citing that the ref responsible has been suspended eases the public perception that refs can do anything they damn well please and nothing happens.

The key word is "mistake." If he made the mistake in the first quarter, would you still be calling it "a big ass mistake?"

I understand the play in question directly impacted the outcome of the game...but shall we punish him for the timing of his mistake?...the probability of making a mistake at the end of the game is the same as the beginning...We can only assume that the ref gives 100% effort thoughout the whole game...it would be unreasonable to say he's suppose ALWAYS be mistake free in the fourth quarter, while saying "mistakes happen" in other quarters...because the goal is for them to be mistake free the whole game...

If the league is going to punish an offical for making a bad call at the end of the game, then they should be consistent and punish them for making bad calls in non-important situations...(which would be impractical)

Another question is...should an official be disciplined for a no-call (missed-call)? if not, we're gonna see a lot more of those in the near future if they keep getting disciplined for making bad calls...Officials are gonna swallow their whistles in fear of getting disciplined...

In addition, what purpose is the suspension serving...is that going to make him a better official?...is he all of a sudden going to see better? is he going to be less human and stop making mistakes? NO

The fact that his name is being connected to this is far worse punishment than a fine or loss of salary...and you can't compare this situation to a player/coach suspension....Players and coaches don't get tossed for mistakes, they get tossed for malice actions....Mcgrady kicks a ball, GP tackles Claxton...those aren't by accident...Would you suspend or fine a player for making an ill-advised pass, or forcing up a bad shot? Would u fine a coach for making bad substitutions? Those are part of the game, as is missed/bad calls by officials...

    Referee protest.

All the refs are wearing their tops inside out in protest regarding the suspended ref.The League said they would react and discipline the refs involved, but they are all involved.

    Thoughts?

An interesting article was written about the protest:

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">An unprecedented job action was taken against one of their colleagues, so an unprecedented response was necessary," said Lamell McMorris, a spokesman and negotiator for the National Basketball Referees Association

Referees at every NBA game were expected to take part in the protest, although Eddie F. Rush and Nolan Fine worked the Grizzlies-Bucks game in Milwaukee and did not. The third member of their crew, Rodney Mott, adhered to the protest.

The NBA released a statement from deputy commissioner Russ Granik saying any referees taking part "will be subject to appropriate discipline."

McMorris said Rush and Fine were "intimidated" by refereeing supervisor Ronnie Nunn.

"From what I understand it was typical bullying tactics by the NBA. Ronnie Nunn came in and threatened them, told them if they wore their shirts inside-out they'd be fired," McMorris said.

NBA vice president Stu Jackson did not return a call seeking comment on McMorris' allegation. </div>

    More here.

You know, I always had a lot of respect for Ronnie Nunn. I've always enjoyed the weekly segment on NBATV Insiders where Spero would sit down with Ronnine Nunn and discuss questionable calls made by refs from the previous weeks games. After reading McMorris' allegations that Fine and Rush would have been fired whereas the other refs would have just received either the standard NBA-wide punishment or even possibly no punishment at all is simply unfair.

If it turns out to be true that Ronnie Nunn did threaten and bully them like that, I will be sure to switch over to another channel next week when Ronnie is on NBATV Insiders.

there is a ref that refs our state and rep games down here he told me its not the players that decide the game its the refs. after he said that i asked who is gonna win then he said the other team i called him a few names he then ejected me. Now everytime he refs me its more biased then a lakers playoff game.
