Orlando needs more than just a top pick

    BY JOHN DENTON
    FLORIDA TODAY

ORLANDO -- Fans might be looking to a potential high draft pick as a means of turning around the reeling Orlando Magic next season, but they aren't necessarily joined in those hopes by star guard Tracy McGrady.

McGrady said that regardless of what pick the Magic get in the draft, that player likely won't have a major impact on next season's team. The Magic have the worst record in the NBA and if that remains, they would have a 25 percent shot at landing the top pick in the draft.

Orlando general manager John Gabriel spent last week in Europe, scouting several players in the various championship tournaments there. Pavel Podkolzine, a 7-foot-5, 300-pound center from Serbia, was one of the players the Magic focused on and is a candidate to become the top pick in the draft.

Orlando has also heavily scouted University of Connecticut power forward Emeka Okafor and Atlanta high school sensation Dwight Howard.

McGrady is not counting on major help from whatever player the Magic pluck out of the draft.

"Really there's nobody who is going to come in and be effective right away," McGrady said, noting there likely is no player the caliber of LeBron James in this draft. "I just don't see anybody coming out of this draft who is going to help us get over the hump." </div>

Way to trash a player who could be playing on your team next year T-Mac. Once again, he needs to keep his mouth shut. A leader doesn't say those kinds of things. How remarks like that boost up the confidence of his fellow teammates.

And he's gonna be eating those words if they land Okafor. [IMG]

He should be talking about his General Manager making the right pick, rather than trashing everyone in the draft sights.. God.... Stupid..

Tracy McBaby lives up to his name again. Amazing how he is an attention whore that will take it any way he can get it, have it be positive or negative.

John Gabriel needs to sit down with Tmac and ask him who he would draft to keep him happy and not just draft someone without Tmac's input. Just wait til the tournament, Okafor will step up big time and will make an immediate impact to our team.

    100% agreement.

I think he is just angry about Gabe's scouting in Europe. Pavel doesn't look to become an immediate input for a team (to me he looks more like a bust, anyway) and this scouting gave T-Mac the impression that Gabe is considering to pick Pavel.

But again and as you pointed out, T-Mac said the wrong words to express his feelings.

T-Mac just doesnt want anyone else hogging the limelight in Orlando. He wants to win but doesnt really want any other all-star in his team but himself. It was evident in Toronto so he left. He doesnt want any attnt to the draft pick like if it was a Lebron type player b/c he doesntwant anyone else to share in his spotlight. But i'd understand b/c their making these draft players out to look like they're better than ppl in the NBA. It's almost as if the ppl that get drafted are like considered like all-stars before they even touch the real NBA

That's a bunch of crap cause if that were true he would've never signed with G.Hill.(Who at the time was bigger than he was!) And he's publicly said he'd love to have G.Hill back. Plus, the Shaq rumors!

THe only gripe I have on him is his immaturity, his big mouth, and his lack of leadership skills. Other than that, he's a hell of player.

Now that's harsh, his attitude has improved so much this year. One thing he'll always have is his game, it's not right, but it's fair sometimes that he rants at them. He, AI and Pierce are working on their own. One guy might make a big difference, but what happens when they get injured? He'd need a better lineup, or in compensation, a good bench.

Ok this is how I see it. Tracy is frustrated with his team's embarrising season and doesn't know what else to do. So he says that no one that the Magic draft will help out the team since he tried his hardest and it made no difference. This is speech out of frustration people. If you think about if the Magic were winning he'd live up to that big C on his jerseyhe wears that means"captian". And who said the truth hurts.

That is not true at all, T-Mac would love nothing more than to be on a successful team surrounded by superstars. I saw an interview that was done by Ahmad Rashad with T-Mac, and Ahmad asked Tracy about all the people who say he left Toronto because he wanted his own team and wanted to be the #1 option. T-Mac said that's not true at all and all of the people who are saying that don't know what they're talking about. Tracy then went on to talk about the big reason he wanted to come back to Orlando is that it's his hometown, that's where he grew up and that's where all of his friends and family are. Also, the fact that the magic signed Grant Hill completely refutes rumors that T-Mac just wants his own team.

The Magic will always be T-Mac's team regardless of whether a high caliber rookie like Okafor comes along or not. The Magic is T-Mac's team just like the Lakers are Shaq's team, the Raptors are Vince's team, and so on and so forth and nothing can change that unless T-Mac does not re-sign with the Magic when his contract is up or if by the extremely slight chance he is traded.

Losing usually humbles a person. U'r also missing Vince and Redd on the working on their own category. Well whatever the case he did say no one would have an impact with the Magic that gets drafted, and thats a bad statement in itself, guess he'll have to get proven wrong, much like Bosh proving Carter wrong

Thanks you're quite right, but they aren't exactly alone. The Raptors have Donyell Marshall, an awesome rebounder, you saw he could score, he's shown it during Vince's absence. Not to mention the recent gain of Rod and also they have the very clutch Alvin Williams. As for Redd, his team has KVH and DMase, they aid him well enough on the offensive end, they just seem to lack size, presence and defense as an overall team.

You're right though, it should've humbled him more, it could've made him a stronger. But look, it's frustrating, he just got mad is all. He'll buck up soon enough or if he moves.

McGrady needs to quit running his mouth and play ball...he's losing the respect of a lotta fans and players by making such absurd and negative comments...
