<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Dallas coach Don Nelson sent an e-mail to Warriors guard Avery Johnson on Thursday offering him a spot on the Mavericks' coaching staff beginning this postseason. Nelson spoke of the e-mail when asked by the Associated Press how often he's in contact with Johnson, who played for Nelson during his first stint with the Warriors and also in Dallas. Johnson has said he plans to go into coaching soon. He is a free agent after this season. "He's got a standing offer from me to join my staff at any time," Nelson said before Dallas played the Sacramento Kings. "I was hoping he would join us for the playoffs if they don't make it and be a part of our organization again. I love working with the guy. I think he will be a good head coach."</div> http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctime...ors/8168171.htm
I think he would be a better coach than Musselman because he has actually played many, many years in the NBA as one of the lesser talented players in the league. He's got a true understanding of the game having played all these years, whereas Musselman hasn't played in the NBA. A.J. has been around a long time because he's smart, a great leader and he's a good tactician on the floor hence his nickname the "Little General". I hope we get him first before Dallas does that's all I can say. This guy could be the X's and O's guy we need and could quell the feud between Musselman and his players. I think A.J. would be the real deal young Coach, not Musselman.

He gets his team to work hard and pretty much keeps everything said in the locker room. He was second in COY voting last season. Johnson might be too much of a "nice" guy to be a coach but we will see.
I think Johnson would make a great coach, but I'm not sure that he'd be better than Musselman at this point. After all, Musselman has a lot more experience coaching. While Avery plays like a coach, there's nothing that can actually simualte the job of a coach.
True. True. I wonder how Avery Johnson feels about being made this offer especially since he told press that he wants to play another year. He probably feels like maybe he is washed up now since Nelson sent him that email and that the warriors have no chance in hell to make the playoffs. Yeah that pretty much hurts to know the terrible truth.
^ Reminds me of playmakers, where the old guy (Leon?) didn't want to accept that he was washed up. But this situation is different, because AJ isn't struggling to control the team. I don't think it matters as much when you realize your career is over when you can make a smooth transition to coach, and I think AJ can do that.
If I were AJ I would jump all over this opportunity. He has the chance to be on a good coaching staff for a promising team. Not a bad start to a coaching career.

UPDATE: Avery Johnson ? I am just excited to still be around. I am in my sixteenth year and it is probably fifteen years longer than anybody thought I would be around. My role has always been leadership, now it the same leadership and less play. But, I am still having an impact on these guys individually and working with them on and off the court. Obviously we haven?t had the season I wanted on the court, but we have had a few small victories off the court and I just have to keep going in the last lap of my career. It is coming to an end very soon.?
Yeah, I think that he should savour this opportunity with the Warriors. I mean, what better way to practice being a coach than being a veteran on a young, bad team? He has shown tremendous leadership. Also, why should he jump all over the opportunity when he knows that he's welcome anytime as a coach with any team? He shoudl take his time and play as long as he wants, because he'll always have a coaching career. Playing, however, is a short-lived experience and he should play it out.
