I, for many years was a big supporter of Mike Sherman - aka Charmin (cause he is soft). I only looked at the win/loss record and considered him a good coach and a better than average GM. I know, I know - dropping 4 straight will dig up all of the naysayers but I try to back up my opinions with facts. Charmin is as only as good as Wolf's last draft picks - which was 2000. Going into season five, Charmin has done nothing to improve the GBP via the draft and has signed FA busts. Can you name the starters from all of Charmin's drafts? 2004 1 25 Ahmad Carroll CB Arkansas 2004 3 70 Joey Thomas CB Montana State 2004 3 72 Donnell Washington DT Clemson 2004 3 87 B.J. Sander P Ohio State 2004 6 179 Corey Williams DT Arkansas State 2004 7 251 Scott Wells C Tennessee 2003 1 29 Nick Barnett OLB Oregon State 2003 3 79 Kenny Peterson DT Ohio State 2003 5 147 James Lee DT Oregon State 2003 5 166 Hunter Hillenmeyer MLB Vanderbilt 2003 6 212 Brennan Curtin T Notre Dame 2003 7 245 Chris Johnson DB Louisville 2003 7 253 DeAndrew Rubin WR South Florida 2003 7 256 Carl Ford WR Toledo 2003 7 257 Steve Josue OLB Carson Newman 2002 1 20 Javon Walker WR Florida State 2002 3 92 Marques Anderson S UCLA 2002 4 135 Najeh Davenport FB Miami 2002 5 156 Aaron Kampman DL Iowa 2002 5 164 Craig Nall QB Northwestern (La.) State 2002 6 200 Mike Houghton OL San Diego State 2001 1 10 Jamal Reynolds DE Florida State 2001 2 41 Robert Ferguson WR Texas A&M 2001 3 71 Bhawoh Jue CB Penn State 2001 3 72 Torrance Marshall LB Oklahoma 2001 4 105 Bill Ferrario G Wisconsin 2001 6 198 David Martin TE Tennessee Not too many there...Barnett and Kampman are the only two on the defense. Barnett looked like a player at times last year, looked bad this year. Kampman is a serviceable DE, not someone who can hold the point of attack on an every down basis. Ferguson could be better than average. Walker is an up and comming stud. After that, nothing. It is hard to keep winning when you have only got three starters from your last 4 drafts. Now, for all of the green/gold still in Charmin denial and say you cannot measure a draft for four years, then take a look at his Free Agent signings. Joe Johnson - $15 Million bust, Clet Hunt - $20+ mill bust, KGB - $20+ mill bust. This isn't monopoly money getting thrown around and all of these three are cap killers. All in all, Charmin at a minimum has to be removed from the GM role. Preferably removed from GB.
Interesting to note, though, that the Packers gave up on Hunter Hillenmeyer a bit early. He's doing great things for the Bears right now while Urlacher is hurt. When Urlacher comes back, they're going to let Hillenmeyer start in a different LB position. I think that Wells will end up starting at some point after this year. I also think that either Thomas or Carroll will become a solid corner in the next few years. Davenport, too, has great potential. The only thing in his way right now is Ahman Green. Heh...the "only" thing. All in all, though, I agree. For every good GM decision Sherman has made, there have been two bad ones. Trying to "win now" with Favre and avoid the dreaded "rebuilding" word has probably cost the Pack their future over the next five years. Favre's going to have a tough decision to make at the end of this year.
