The playoffs start in 13 days and Don Nelson is tinkering.

At a time when most teams are fine-tuning rotations for the postseason, the Mavericks' coach continues to search for the right mix. In the wake of All- Star Dirk Nowitzki's pointed comments about team turmoil and the latest round of speculation about Pat Riley possibly returning to coaching next season in Dallas, Nelson has dipped into his past and gone to a small-ball starting lineup. Until further notice, Nelson will use guards Steve Nash and Marquis Daniels (an impressive undrafted rookie), swingman Michael Finley and forwards Nowitzki and Antoine Walker in the first unit. The Mavericks, in fact, often have played without a center this season, but the difference here is that Nelson does not even bother putting Danny Fortson, Scott Williams or Shawn Bradley on the court for the opening tip. </div>
