Ron "Fritz'' Williams, who played five of his eight NBA seasons with the Warriors and was one of the first black basketball players at West Virginia University, has died. He was 59.

Williams died of a heart attack Sunday at his San Jose home, his son, Eric, said.

Williams, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 10.7 points and four assists in 390 games with the Warriors, who drafted him ninth overall in 1968. That same year, the Dallas Cowboys drafted him in the 14th round even though Williams, a high school football, basketball and track standout in West Virginia, did not play football in college. He rejected the Cowboys' contract offer and stayed with basketball. Williams averaged a career-high 14.8 points and 5.3 assists with the Warriors in 1969-70, a season that ended with Al Attles serving as player-coach.
