What do the players have to work on this summer???

Who would you like to work on his shot? On their dribbling? Make a list of 3 Raptors and say what they should do in the off-season to improve their game. <font color="sandybrown"><font color="red">And don't bother making smart ass comments like "Vince needs to toughen up"</font>. </font>Lets make this interesting.

Okay enough yapping here it is:

Vince Carter: Vince is a great player and 20, 5, and 5 proves it. But that doesn't mean he gets left off of this list. Vince has obviously turned into a perimeter player this season so he needs to work on his catch and shoot and just taking better shots. Try to add something else to your repertoire of moves other than the isolation, take him off the dribble move. Maybe a pump fake or drop step. I don't see that from him too often and it would help his game because people are actually respecting his shot now.

Vince also needs to move without the ball better on offense. He was doing that in his first three seasons, cutting to the open basket for the alley oop or powerful dunk but that has fallen off tremedously. He always does these plays 20/30 times during a game and its getting really ineffective: iso's, and running off pointless screens just to take a jump shot with a man in his face. Play without the ball and you become a much better player.

He definately has to work on his defence this summer (getting to the spot before his man does, using his athelticism to over power other guards) and he has to get stronger physically in the off-season to compete with the likes of Lebron, Kobe and Mcgrady.

Jalen Rose: Overall this guy needs to hit the gym. He looks like a stick man out there. The only reason he can post up is because he is playing the point guard position (which I don't think he will be playing past this season) and posting up smaller players. If he starts playing shooting guard or small foward he has to gain a little weight. His shot selection is not the greatest as well but I don't know how you can work on that. To me it's just natural.

His defence is just horrible. To me it's either he's really lazy or he has two left feet when it comes to defence. Don't give me the excuse about guarding small guards either. He gets raped by everyone he guards. Improve on your defence and the Raptors will become a stronger team.

Chris Bosh: What can I say about his kid. He's more than what I was expecting that is for sure. This guy is just talented and if the Raptors don't get a big man to man to play the 5 spot this year, we will be wasting his talent and setting back his developement. Okay now...on to the topic at hand. He obviously has to get stronger. Thats a given. Even against power fowards he is too small and he is playing at a disadvantage almost every time he comes down the court. With an offseason of working out with Kurt Thomas every day, I can see him coming into camp 10-15 pounds heavier, maybe more.

He has the mechanics of a good shot and he can shoot the three when it is desperatley needed (Only Raptor fans that watch the games can attest to this). He needs to develope that further to make it a serious threat (a la Kevin Garnett) from midrange.

Defensively he is one of the best on the team. Either coming from the weak side blocking a shot or moving his feet to take a charge, he is a good defensive player and he will only get better. Bulking up his physique will help his defensive game immediately because he gets overpowered too many times. Other than that, defensively this guy is the top player on the Raptors.

Okay I'm done for now. I want to see what you guys can come up with.

Vince needs to watch old tapes of Dominique Wilkins and see a guy that no matter what, with age and bad health, would still take it to the hole hard and dunk on your face.

Not sure if we will see that again from him.

That is a question that I ask myself every time I see him play. Obviously Vince was fearless in his first three seasons in the league, it was what he was known for. Now I see he has developed himself into a perimeter player, taking outside shots when not needed and weakly driving to the basket.

He needs the scowl and attitude he used to have before. I just think he needs to "attack" the basket rather than give it a "bitch slap".

Back on topic: I'm adding this to the "What Vince needs to work on during the summer". This is a definate must. Hopefully his wife will beat the man out of him during the summer.

Chris Bosh would definitely be an all star in a couple of years. He is the type of player you can build around especially with another star on your team and a good talented-enough team they are potential championship caliber. Chris Bosh definitely needs to lift weights and gain about 20 pounds over the early vacation. I also noticed that he loves those 15 foot baseline shots so he should be a little more consistent at that particular range, nonetheless improving to about 18-19 feet. He has exceeded what i expected this year for a guy who is 210 lbs. playing center. we all know that is not his natural position and he posts up centers at the likes of Jamaal Magloire etc.

^Good post. I never expected CB4 to be this solid but he is. And I'm not complaining. He does needs to put on weight to battle the 4's and 5's.

One thing I want to say (I forgot) about this rookie is that he is tough. Not only taking on centres but challenging them to take him. His moves off of the dribble are pretty good for a guy his height and to take a charge on a guy that is 20-50 pounds heavier than you automatically means that you have balls.

Why does Everyone complain about Vince? I was happy with his season. He had about 23ppg 5rpg 5apg. His only problem is he isn't that aggresive anymore but his jump shot has gotten alot better. As for Bosh he will come into next season id say about 235 and tear up the east. Bosh will be the number 2 option next year. If anyone needs to work on there defense its Donyell. Other teams power forwards ate him up. Id like to see Donyell lose a bit of fat and come in next year alot quicker so he can see some time at SF.

VINCE: needs to learn how to move without the ball better. he does it well, no question, but he needs to learn how to rub defenders off screens similar to the way rip hamilton does. if even half the shots vince took from 3 pt land were mid-range shots, his shooting percentage would have be way higher. if vince learns this, he'll add an aspect to his game that will make him that much more deadly.

bosh:needs a "GO TO" move in the post. seemed when he was in iso situations, he kinda just improved and tried to do something different everytime. hes got that mid range jumper thats absolutely money, he needs a "go to" move in the post with his back to the basket

donyell: needs to work on his latterall quicks. his post defense was pretty decent, but his perimiter defense was abismal. down the strech all he really did for us was shoot 3 balls and grab rebounds. someone with his skill needs to be in the post more with his back to the basket.

An aggressive Carter would have more impact on the game, that is why. Huge dunks would get the home crowd going and hush thea way crowd. It would pump his team up and maybe get them playing with more aggression.

    That is why.

Good Post KC. I'm not exactly complaining about Vince but I think every Raptor fan knows that his lack of agressiveness in attacking the hoop is now his weakest point. His jump shot has gotten better but you have to admit that sometimes he doesn't drive to the hoop when it is needed the most, rather settling for a jumper.

Good point on Donyell Marshall. Although he was blocking a ton of shots for us his one on one defence was suspect. He got touched up enough times by 4's all season. I agree that if he can shed off some weight and become quicker, he could become a solid small foward for the Raptors.

One thing about Chris Bosh is that even though he is much smaller then the centers in the East, he is also much much more quicker then them, which is why he was pretty sucessful against most of them...once he bulks up a little more every off-season, he can look to be a dominance every single game and not have to be shut out or stopped by the likes of more powerful centers (eg-Wallace, Jermaine)

I can see him as a smaller version of KG...he just needs to bulk up...in a couple of years (if his devolvement is worked at) he will be more then all-star caliber....he excelled peoples expectations in his ROOKIE year, playing center for an undersized team and competing against the like of Shaq, Yao Ming etc....and he held his own, i gotta give props to him...

    Vince Carter

somehow i have a feeling Vince will be too relaxed this off-season...He used to be not so determined (i have heard this from other players, i havent been around him so i cant confirm it) before he had a wife and with the wife, im expecting him to chill for atleast a month...

My suggestion to him would be to just heal first and then work on your conditioning more then anything....like Baron Davis said last year "I worked all summer on my conditioning...My game didnt need improvement, my body did"
I think vince should follow that mentality while trying to bulk up a little more so he can drive to the hole more often....Vince like to settle for those awkward fadeaways from 20 feet or so and mostly it falls in but if he continues to work on his shot and make himself an inside/outside guy consistently then that'll be good

Bosh has a weak post game and he needs to develope that a lot more. He usually turns and faces the basket after calling for the ball in the post. He needs to utilize a median between both being the post and taking the man off the dribble. This will make him a lot more dangerous on the offensive end.

    Vince Carter
Out of everyone on the Raptors, he needs to do the most work simply because he's the leader of the team and the most important player. Although his numbers look good, 20-5-5, I can't help but notice that his FG% is the worst it's ever been (41.7%). He needs to try to get back to Vince at his best ('00-'01: 27.6ppg at 46% FG). He takes way too many jumpshots when he's capable of attacking the bucket. He also needs to be more WAY more aggresive on defense. Teams usually take advantage and attack Vince when he's on defense, so he needs to toughen up in that sense. Last but not least, he needs to condition himself in the offseason. If he keeps working out in the offseason, he would stay healthy during the basketball season.

    Chris Bosh
I'm not too worried about him. He knows what to improve on and just as long as he keeps up his pace, he'll be just fine. What he really needs to work on though is some back to the bucket moves. I also don't know why people want him to gain weight so bad. He gained a lot of muscle since he first got drafted. The body he has right now is a good PF physique, he just has to work on his tone.

    Jerome Moiso
Everyone mentioned Marshall and Rose so I'll mention Moiso. He needs to work on EVERYTHING. He has the tools but doesn't know how to use them. He needs to get some sort of offense game going. He has no jumpshot, no post-up moves, and no face to the bucket moves. Defensively he needs work on his lateral quicks. A lot of times you'll see bigger, slower players just blow right by him and that's not acceptable.

CREATE SOME OTHER MOVES! That's all I can say, cause to me, Vince workin extra hard on defence or w/e aint gonna happen, he hasnt been doin that for last 7 years what makes you think he's gon do it now? AD and Oak all blasted him, he's not gonna change now believe me.

MAIN THING for me is he's gotta learn to POST UP like Jalen does. This guy doing fadeaway against lil players just ridiculous. I dont know if he's tryin to look nice doin that, but fuk how you look, I dont care if it's ugly, just post up and USE THE BODY!

Also... GO TO THE HOLE! Get STRIPPED, BLOCKED, HIT, WHATEVER, JUST DO ITTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!! [IMG]

    Jalen Rose
Dont need to hit the gym, he's strong enough. Just stop takin too many quick shots, look around a lil more, that's all... but keep drivin in and post like you do, I can't say anythin bad about this guy other than that.

<u>Vince Carter</u> - this may be too late in his career to mention this, however I think he needs to get quicker. The reason I say this is because on offense and defense he seems a little too slow, I'm not sure if anyone else notices this or not, maybe its his intensity level, either way he needs to move his feet quicker on both sides of the ball.

Another thing is exactly what CourtVision said, Vince needs to learn to move without the ball. If Vince moves without the ball more and possibly faster this may get the defense tired and it will make Vince more effective at cutting to the lane or moving to the ball. Any coach will tell you that its much easier to guard a player if they aren't moving, so if Vince moves without the ball it can open scoring chances, and can make him and his team more effective.

<u>Chris Bosh</u> - This guy had a great season and he can have an even better one next year if he maintains his quickness and gains a few pounds. He needs to hit the gym and work on all areas of his body and if he can gain 15 pounds or more it will benefit him next season and many seasons after that.

I can't single out a certain part of his game to work on, so I'd say he should work on all areas to stay balanced.

<u>Jerome Moiso</u> - He has an athletic ability, he just needs to work on his shooting, post moves, and boxing out when rebounding. Coming over from New Orleans people thought that this guy could potentially start for this team, but his lack of effort and poor decisions put him on the bench.

    <u>Vince Carter</u>
Watch Jordan play, or even a guy right now, watch Kobe Bryant play. Vince does not utilize fakes, he does not pump fake, get defenders up in the air etc. He needs to do this, and work and his mid range shooting game. He also needs to learn to move without the ball, our offense was part of the cause for it this year because no one moved but next year with hopefully a better offense he needs to be like Rip, Michael Redd etc when without the ball.

Vince needs to work on his post moves, he has the ability and length to post up other players but his moves aren't sufficient enough. Like I previously mentioned, he needs to add a lot of fakes, and more moves. He also needs to stop fading when he shoots, he needs to go straight up on his shots, who's going to block him? He also needs improved quickness, I also noticed that he seemed slow, and also so some more conditioning and strength training.

Lastly Vince needs to work on his handles, guys like Kobe, Tmac, Redd (yes Redd), Ray Allen, Pierce all have better handles than him. He has good handles but not good enough for him to consistently beat his defender off the dribble. He also needs to dribble less sometimes and beat his man from the triple threat position.

    <u>Chris Bosh</u>
I'm not going to push the whole weight thing because gaining 15 pounds all in one summer is a lot, but Bosh needs to bulk up a little. If he can be like Nene who is big but also extremely quick that would be great for him.

With him bulking up he'll also learn to absord contact better because sometimes I see him do double pump shots on a drive, he needs to extened his arm take the contact and do a hook or something.

Bosh needs post moves and lots of them. He needs Olajuwon to come here and teach him the dream shake, all his hook shots, the step back fadeaway and all that. Bosh's post moves right now are predictable and not too effective, he has a good face up game but back to the basket I'd say is horrible. Hook shot is very important.
He could also work on his handles because he seems to like to do crossovers [IMG]

He has great range and his shot is good but he needs a little form adjustment, his release is too low and it allows him to get blocked easily when he does turnaround jumpers, and also affects his free throw shooting. He needs to release the ball higher and get his form a little better.

    <u>Jerome Moiso</u>
He needs to work on his shooitng, especially his form, he looks like Bo Outlaw sometimes.

He needs to get some post moves, like I said we need Olajuwon in here, or make him and Bosh watch Olajuwon's post moves tape. He's got the atheletic ability, stamin and build but needs to fine tune his game. A lot of his talents are raw.

Jerome also needs to improve his basketball IQ, maybe make him watch game tape so he knows what he does wrong, allow him to learn player tendencies and just some fundamental things like where to be on the court, defensive rotations etc.

Give Vince a break! Man, no matter what he will never be good enough for everyone. If you look at his highlight reels for this year, its just as good as his first two seasons, except for the flashy dunks. You cant expect him to drive it every time. He's the only real offence of the raptors. Instead of asking him to improve himself, why dont you ask the other raptors to get better and complement him, or ask mgmt to get some better players!? You think he can always just drive it in and drive it in? The defenders KNOW he's the only offence, so they will zone in on him alone mostly. But if you had better players around Carter, m/b he wouldnt get triple teamed so often, then Carter could drive it in. And dont you think he's tired? He's the only one running back and forth to get the ball from the teammates since everyone else just stands around and watch him. And i hate when ppl compare him to T-Mac. They say he has to compete with T-Mac. T-Mac is the #1 scorer of the NBA. If Carter was to be #1 scorer next year, ppl would still find flaws in him regardless and say T-Mac is still better than him. Why bother? Asking so much from him, change things around him, and you'll see that he'll be a much better player if you dont give him so much of a load to burden. Remember: He's the only American great superstar that is willing to give Canada a shot, and still gets criticized. That's SACRIFICE. He's forgoing alot of extra fame in the US for us, so stop asking for too much insane requests. No player is perfect, competing with T-Mac? Did you see the time this season they played and Carter hit the side 20 footer while fading away and T-Mac was defending him to win the game? Didnt you also see him beating the Cavs the last game? Dont you notice he has a better record than T-Mac? Dont you notice T-Mac cant just drive it in all the time either? People Consider T-Mac the best, and when they say Carter should improve this or improve that to even be considered close to T-Mac. And if you consider T-Mac the best, and Carter close to him if he were to slash more, dont you think Carter should be getting a little more respect than what people give him? If he were to do all the slashing people are asking of him (which they say for him to compete with McGrady), will you consider him one of the best of the NBA? Like how ppl consider McGrady one of the best? I dont think so. People will still be down on him even if they say things like that. Do you get my reasoning? Its been like this time and time again..

McGrady= one of the best (Top 5)

Criticizers= For Carter "to compete with McGrady" he must slash and drive to the basket like every possession, and dont take fade away shots that miss

Carter for the season= drives every time, slash etc

Then should happen ----> Carter=McGrady (based on criticizers quotes)

And if McGrady= one of the best

Carter should also = one of the best (Top 5)

    BUT THE REALITY IS

Carter = still not one of the best in ppl's views even if he were to do that. There will always be something else ppl will throw at him.

Why? Why is it like this?!

Another thing: why would ppl trade Carter for Artest? Artest doesnt have the burden of leading a whole team, no way he can do it all on his own. Some ppl may look good when amongst other stars, but on their own they can be pretty crappy.

I mean if Carter had a 30 point scoring avg, most ppl will still turn a blind eye next season and say the same things over and over again. Jus chill and give Carter a chance, dont ask more from him than he's giving, cuz without him, raptors would not even win half the games. He's given enough to the Raptors offensively, including the assists that have the other raptors players put their numbers up, so stop asking. If they dont bring in some other skilled players soon, all the talent he currently has will be wasted giving his all. We're lucky to even have him on our team. How bout giving him some help for all he's done for the raptors?! Its not like he isnt asking for it! Give him something in return rather than asking him to be better to win for the team. Its like you're asking for him to be superman so that when his teammates always screw up, he will be depended on to do everything. Change the garbage, not the star.

Another thing, stop asking for Vince to be quicker and do other things. He is not a "spring chicken" you know, he's old now! TMac and LeBron had luxury of not playing in college, and so did Kobe, for Vince to keep up with them after wasting alot of his speed in North Carolina says a tremendous amount about his character and athleticism. Of course, ppl would rather bash him for crappy reasons.

VC: I believe he should simply go somewhat fundamentals a lot of the time. He needs to stick to his easy plays over his powerful, fancy ones that he does only occasionally now. Because of his age, weakness and small physique, he needs to take that into account and rely on open looks, easy baskets and especially rely on his other teammates, carrying will be too difficult for him. Plus although he has awesome handle, like previously said he needs to play without the ball, and fake a lot, that'd definitely reduce rejections, obstructions and turnovers.

AW: Your clutch, workhorse, he seems to be kinda lagging as of late and needs to step up. He's small enough to slash and should do so, work on speed and bulk up a bit. He needs to be a bit more consistent and play smarter, he's starting to turnover and get lost a bit too much.

Change the garbage, not the star.</div>

So what you're saying is that you don't want Vince to work on his game? I don't think anyone here was comparing him to Tmac, we just want him to be more aggressive, Carter is a good shooter, no player needs to drive everytime, but he also can't take 2 dribble and a fadeaway. Their have been games where he wouldn't ge double or triple teamed but would still constantly settle for the J. The other thing is that Carter can jump and he has length yet he always fades away, your shot is more accurate when you go straight up. Now I don't mind a post up fadeaway or some fade-aways but he does it too much.
Also I think I mentioned that part of the fault wa our offense, not even the other player but our offense was too stagnantm no one moving or cutting to he basket, no creating easy oppurtunities, it was just bad.
I also don't think anyone is criticizing him or making insane requests, players should be trying to get better, and saying that Carter should do quickness excersizes, or do strength training or use pump-fakes isn't criticizing, its just saying what he needs to be more succesful, or you could call it constructive criticizing but its not bashing like you're making it seem.

I also don't know where the Vince for Artest thing came from????????????

Also people do consider Vince one of the top 10 talented players in the league, but they only consider him a top 20-25 player. His talent is up their, but his play isn't up their right now.

Anyways, if you think players shouldn't strive to improve after they've got to a certain age, then I hope you aren't any players trainer :P
Of course the whole team has to improve and we need better pieces but Vince can't jut say I've peaked at how good I can be so I'll sleep and chill with the wifey all summr, he has to work too, everyone does, even 30 year old Jalen Rose.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Another thing, stop asking for Vince to be quicker and do other things. He is not a "spring chicken" you know, he's old now! TMac and LeBron had luxury of not playing in college, and so did Kobe, for Vince to keep up with them after wasting alot of his speed in North Carolina says a tremendous amount about his character and athleticism. Of course, ppl would rather bash him for crappy reasons.</div>

Like I said, their are quickness training drills.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">AW: Your clutch, workhorse, he seems to be kinda lagging as of late and needs to step up. He's small enough to slash and should do so, work on speed and bulk up a bit. He needs to be a bit more consistent and play smarter, he's starting to turnover and get lost a bit too much.</div>

I really wonder if Alvin Can bulk up, is it possible?
I also like what you said about Carter, thats what a lot of us have said, do some of that fundamental stuff, it will get him to the line and also get him easy baskets. The pump fakes, off-ball movement etc, that also why I said he should work on conditioning because if you're going to be moving all game you need to be in good shape so you can go back on D and still have energy. In training camp our new coach should work this guy and make them have the conditioning of a team that will run the ball all the time and move all game long. It doesn't mean we should run the ball all the time but our guys should have that conditioning, it will allow them to play good and with energy on O and D

I dont know why Vince became so much slower(yea... injury lmao) or lost his handle.

If you see the clips from 1999 or 2000, this guy did crossovers like Tim Hardaway(u know what I mean) and slashed to the basket like Pierce and Iverson... his legs were always movin and basically, really really quick.

Now he got that WIDE step he does, and runs lil funny, I dont know what it is, he kinda looks like he's hoppin when he runs, somewhat.
