Well, I could read it earlier, but I dont want to sign up an account for the Mercury. Anyways, it was about Higgins replacing Muss. Now everyone here knows that I am a die hard backer of Muss because he has gotten our group of players to play hard through the end of the season. Yes, he has made mistakes and has been stubborn, however, he is a young coach and I think he is just trying to mimick the great coaches like Riley, Jackson, Brown, ect. But after reading this article, I am open to Higgins replacing Muss. They did not mention Muss's screwups. All they talked about was how Higgins played with Mullin during the run TMC days, Jordan wanted Higgins to coach for the Wizards, and he has the support of a lot of players and GMs. If this is the replacement for Muss, then so be it. Good luck to Muss. Thanks for the wins the last 2 years, and I think that Higgins could be a great coach for us...

I agree, I hate to see Muss leave, but if its gonna happen might as well bring in a coach that has been linked to the organization for years. They will have a top to bottom former Warrior infastructure with Mully the GM and Higgins the coach...all they need now is Timmy Hardaway as a talent scout....ha ha

Yea, I read that article too. It seemed pretty persuasive to me, now it doesn't seem too bad to have Higgins as coach. Before I would definitely would have wanted Muss to stay just because of what he has done in the least 2 seasons and for the sake of some semblance of continiuty for this team that has gone through a tremendous amount of change in the last 10 seasons.

I could not have said it better! That is how I feel about firing him about only 2 years. I figured it would take about a year to get used to his system, another year to really implement it, then another year to have it work to perfection...

Let's get Sarunas Marciulionis to scout some talent back in his country.

I'll believe it when I read a Steinmetz or Weinstein article about it. Kawakami has absolutely no credibility with me. His trade ideas are always totally unfounded and he has no understanding of the salary cap.

I'm not saying it won't happen, in fact there's no reason why Higgins wouldn't be Mullin's #1 choice if he took over for Saint. I'm just saying that just because Kawakami says it's going to happen, doesn't make it any more probable in my mind.

Now I do have some reservations about Higgins. His qualifications are that he's a great guy, players really like him, but what has he done? I guess you could say the same thing about Musselman, but here's the difference. The only team talking about Higgins as a coaching candidate is the Warriors. Several teams thought highly of Musselman when the Warriors hired him.

^^I don't think in the article he ever said Higgins was going to get the job, he was just giving his reasons why Higgins would be a good coach.

He started out saying that he suspected it wouldn't be long before it happened. Then he back tracked a bit saying it may or may not be a sure thing.

My hatred of Kawakami is not based on this article. Its based on articles he's written over the last three or four years where he has repeatedly demonstrated that he has no understanding of the financial side of basketball and only a limited understanding of the talent side.

Wasn't that guy the same guy who wrote "why we should get Kobe" in the Mercury news? That guy is just writing for shock value. I think all sports writers do that. He's like that one dude who writes for the Oakland Tribune, Dave Del Grande. Those two write just about anything to get sports fans to disagree with him and start talking about it. Like we're doing now.

I've always considered Skip Bayless to be the Merc's resident "shock journalist." He always takes the position that is most likely to get a rise out of people. As for Kawakami, I think he's just an idiot. My disagreements with his stuff usually aren't that his ideas are bad, its that they aren't possible. For example, he was always writing articles about how the Warriors should trade Jamison for this guy or that guy, but his deals never worked under the cap. What's the use of writing about something that can't happen? Doesn't a reporter have an ethical duty to make sure his should his trade proposals are at least possible before he begins to debate whether they are in the best interest of the team? He's actually doing the public a disservice because most readers don't know how the salary cap works (and I wouldn't expect them to) and if they read about a proposed trade, they probably assume that it works under the CBA. Its like me telling you that a recent study proved that all white males are smarter and better looking than males of any other race. Its just not true, but if you present it as the truth to someone who doesn't know any better, they're going to believe it. Sorry for the rant, it doesn't have anything to do with anything...I just can't stand Kawakami.

Del Grande gets on my nerves some times as well. I remember the feud he had with Rick Barry last year where he was publically chastizing Barry for using his radio show as a soap box for why he should be the Warriors coach. I thought it made Del Grande look really petty.

One of my pet peeves is writers who take positions just to get people to react. I understand controversy sells papers, but I still have a problem when the writer presents one opinion as his public belief when he has a totally different opinion as his private belief. This is something Barry and Gary Radnich have repeatedly said Bayless does. And it isn't that it ever gets me talking about the articles, unless me saying Kawakami, Bayless, and Del Grande are idiots is talking about it. Even if it is, I don't have a subscription to any of these papers, so they aren't making any money off me.

I hear ya. Controversy is one thing but I didn't really look into those articles too much to even consider what you just pointed out. You pointed out that some of those sports writers were pumping out b.s. all along because their ideas won't even work under the guidelines of the collective bargaining agreement in the first place. And you know something, I can't remember a good article that ever cited CBA rules and conditions and actual parts of player's contract clauses (which are disclosed to the public). Yet, here the writers are talking about trades that don't even take the salary cap into consideration and passing it on to the public as information about possible moves. That is pretty specious and irresponsible of a writer of any kind, including sports!

I say we just promote Avery Johnson to coach...lol. I really don't know what to predict if he becomes coach, just depends on how the players react to the change and whether they buy into his system or not.

There's nothing about Higgins that makes me think he'd be a great coach. He's definatlely well liked as a person...but then again, so was St. Jean. I'd like to hear what other people in the league think of the work he's done as an assistant coach and team executive before I make up my mind.

Oh, and getting Jordan's stamp of approval doesn't mean that much to me. Jordan is the greatest player of all time, but he was average at best as a GM.

I haven't read the article nor know Higgins that much. But i'd like to see the Warriors get a coach who will demand a lot from his players, get some good defense, and energy, and someone who will use his players on offense wisely and cleverly to give them some easy buckets.

I agree though. We need a guy whom the players respect and are going to play their hearts out for.

I was going to say the same thing right up until I read the part about using his players wisely and cleverly on offense to get easy buckets. Musselman's version of offense is basically to give the keys to the point guard and let him run the show.

While I do love the open offense, it would be nice to have some structure at the end of games.

By the way, I'm slowly resigning myself to the fact that Musselman isn't going to be coaching the Warriors next year. I just hope they don't make wholesale changes to the roster as well.

See, this is why the Warriors will never win. They keep switching around their coaches, and these ridiculous-minded management in Gary St. Jean and Chris Cohan feel that the players will adjust to different coaches year after year. Give me a break. How many coaches have the Warriors had in the last several years now? And why can't Golden State just work things out with Musselman to give him another shot with this franchise? It wasn't like in his first two seasons there it was turmoil. They had decent records that could of gotten themselves into the playoffs this year if they played in the mediocre Eastern Conference. In closing, to the Warriors management, RELAX!! No reason to hit the panic button.

Thats what I am saying! If they make the playoffs next year, give him a new contract! If he does not let him go.

I'd say the majority of Warrior fans probably want Musselman to stay.

I totally agree that franchises need some form of continuity to be successful, at least in the front office, the coach, and the marquee players.
