<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Accord:</div><div class="quote_post">Actually there are a couple MLB players over there right now, I know there's at least 3 MLB players. Pat Tillman's brother (can't remember his name but I heard it on the news earlier) who is currently in Iraq was actually drafted by the Cleveland Indian's and was playing for the Indians minor league AAA club and was about to be called up to the big leagues but instead enlisted into the army at the same time Pat Tillman, his brother did.

On another note, yes the professional athletes of today are for the most part much much much more selfish than the professional athletes of the glory days. Back during WW2, more than 60% of all MLB players actually enlisted and fought in the war, now it's something like .0000001%.</div>

I didn't hear anything about that, I heard about the WW2 though. Who's the other 2, because they talked about Tillman when he inlisted but didn't hear about anybody else. Thanks for the info.

Who cares if an NBA player would do it, the AVERAGE PERSON WOULDN'T DO IT. NBA Players are not some sort of Gods with supernatural powers.

^You're right, an average person wouldn't do it either, many soliders is there because they have to serve their countries. And if they don't, they will be juged by a court because they didn't serve in the army.

What are you guys talking about...the U.S military is full of Americans willing to serve their country. Sure, alot of people enlist for a job or education but a good friend of mine is enlisting next year and he could get into any college around here. Its because of this that American soldiers get so much admiration. It may be hard for people that don't live in the U.S to understand but soldiers are heroes in my eyes and I know alot of others would agree. Whether you agree with political decisions made by the government is not an issue when it comes to risking your own life to ensure a better one for everybody in your country.

Pat Tillman and the rest of our military weither they are in the Army, National Guard, Navy, Air Force, or Marines they all should be heroes. Wither or not you agree or disagree with the war or President Bush, we should all support our President and our troops and keep them in our prayers. Our local National Guard has just returned from a one year stay in Iraq and I respect each and everyone of them for what they did, because they all have bigger balls than me and everyone on this board. I, myself, supports President Bush's plan to liberate Iraq and Afghanistan from the Tailaban. Bush had reason to declare war on the terrorism on Iraq and Afghanistan. Some of his top advisors, told him that Sadam had WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction), so Bush acting on protecting his country like a president needs to do, he deployed our troops over there. Sure some of this might be over oil, but not all of it. In the end maybe we will have two countries free from dictators, and a government the people of these countries want. Don't bash Bush for this war, because no other President has ever had to deal with 9/11 type of crisis.
And to answer the question in the first post, I don't think anyone in the NBA would join the Army and fight in a war. Most of them would try to windle their way out of the draft if it comes to that.

RIP Pat Tillman and all other fallen soldiers
    God Bless the USA
    God Bless President Bush

I respect your opinions, if i was American i'd probably think the same way, but since i'm not, i dont. It's really how Americanists market their country, America has a very inspirational national anthem and they love to voice it, and they're born into happiness and proud of their country. But ppl in many other places say ppl live live in terrible 3rd world countries dont have the media and public relations and inspiration to feed off of. Its actually really smart of the Americans to do it the way they do. It all comes down to where a person was brought up and the influences that have affected a person

Accord was absolutely right. You have to put this in context. Pat Tillman enlisted after 9/11, and went to Afghanistan specifically to hunt down terrorists to whom the Taliban was providing safe harbor. He made a noble and brave gesture, one that costed him his life eventually and whether or not you agree with the war, he did, and said no to millions of dollars to go fight for what he believed.

To me the most impressive thing is that he did it without fanfare. No interviews, no looking for the limelight, no book or movie deals. The worst anybody could do to dishonor his memory is to use his death as an argument to support the war in Iraq. Many soldiers died in Viet Nam fighthing a war they didn't believe in -that didn't made them heroes but the tragedy of their deaths is no less true. I'm sure the same is true of many soldiers in Iraq. But they are doing the job they signed on for, and for that they deserve respect.

I was sick at the coverage on Fox News of Tillman's death. It was practically a campaign for Bush. For all I know the guy could have been a Republican and a Bush supporter, but he didn't make his decision political. Respect the manner in which he conducted himself and don't make him the symbol in death that he didn't want to be in life. He was just an American soldier, doing what he thought was the right thing to do.

That means saving thousands of lives. America's freedoms are kept intact because of the brave men that fight overseas. If you don't think risking your own life to save thousands and ensure the safety of your whole country is heroic...then I question your humanity. People don't enlist in the army just to kill people for fun...you seem very uninformed so please don't assume things because you have no idea what you are talking about.

I can't even believe this is a discussion..my lord have we fallen that far as a society? Pat Tillman is a symbol. He's a symbol because of his unselfish service to his country. He walked away from a very lucrative profession to put his life on the line for his country. He did this at a time when the United States was racked with a great fear as to what would happen next. Like it or not 9/11 put us on the ropes.

Pat Tillman is a symbol in a day and age where unselfishness is very very very rare and what Pat Tillman did was the ultimate gift to his fellow Americans. Gave up his dream profession to go help ensure that 9/11 wouldn't happen again and in the process of doing that he lost his life. If any of you can dare to call him anything other than a hero and anything other than a symbol of what is right with America then you cats have alot to learn.

I think you are missing the moral of this story. A pro football player walked away from millions of dollars to enter the military. While doing so, he put his life on the line for our freedom. It's very rare for a player to do such a thing, and rather than question if he's a hero, just appreciate what he did.

Debate all you want if we should be in Iraq/Afghanistan right now. It's completely irrevelent to this story, because we cannot control whats going on overseas.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Players who helps charity and sick childrens (divac, ray allen, peja etc.) are (my opinion) real heros because with their millions they're helping ppl who really needs it.. but why consider this guy as a hero?,. he didn't help anybody he maybe kills innocent ppl and he's an hero?</div>
Actually, real heros are ones who help fight for our freedom, fight fires, teach students, etc. It's your opinion that the NBA players are heros, but I think most would agree with me. They are the ones who are getting paid mininum wage and working their rears off to help others. When NBA players donate to others, yeah its very nice of them, but all they are doing is writing a check. They make so much money that a few million won't phase them. Most of the time they are just doing it for a tax write off. I'll agree with you that they are doing a great thing, but lets see them get their nails dirty before we call them a hero.

All of the men and women who have died in any wars are heros. Without them, we wouldn't have the freedom we do right now.

i didn't say all nba players are heros.. some of them.. i know they're many player who takes their millions and buy them a villa and a ferrari etc(kobe).. but they are some who cares about poeple who really needs that money . go see http://www.groupseven.org/, but what that NFL player was great for his country, but they didn't need it because he fought for oil and nothing else.. this war is really stupid and was not needed.. so if for you kills innocent poeples for oil is be an hero, man that's your problem

Who cares why we are over there. Thats really not the point. Oil was one of the problems, but we're also trying to free some innocent civilians who are being killed by their own people on a daily basis. It's a two way street, to free some means we have to kill some in the process.

Even if these players donated money, I would still put a solider fighting for our country ahead of them. David Robinsion donated $500,000 for a school, which was amazing. Theres players out there that give back to the community, and I'd never question their desire for helping others. But think about it for a minute. If we didn't have people overseas fighting for us, would we even have the opportunity to watch the NBA? All hell could break loose, we could be living without freedom, and no longer have the daily things we take advantage of.

Useless? The war in Afghanistan is useless? You live in Canada. Canada is a Free Nation that is just as susceptable to terrorism as the United States..you need to thank all the soldiers that went to Afghanistan and threw a wrench into Al Quaida because I'm almost positive that they dented those cowardly scumbuckets so bad that it totally threw them in a tailspin and stopped ALOT of terroist actions from happening. Calling the war in Afghanistan usless is a completely ignorant statement on your part.
