Is "Thirst" of Sprite a ripoff of Lil Penny? I can't shake this feeling but I think Sprite has totally ripped off Lil Penny with their new mascot "Thirst". I think they are biting Lil Penny (done by Chris Rock) terribly and I am thinking of boycotting Sprite for this. These commericals aren't even funny and they are totally ripping off Lil Penny. I understand your position, but consider the following: 1. When was the last time you saw an original ad idea? Most ads are concepts taken and reworked/revised, etc. 2. Personally, I think they are funny and enjoy them much more than I ever enjoyed the Lil' Penny commercials. At the very least, the ads aren't boring.
I personally don't think the ads are entertaining. This dude is a second hand Lil Penny and he does not do it as well as Chris Rock did whatsoever. I agree that commercials are bitten regularly throughout time but to develope a puppet like character who interacts with a basketball superstar (Lebron) and talks street talk? They just took the puppet from the Lil Penny commercials, put a fro on him and called him Thirst. Horrible.
Those are horrible commecials. I turn the channel everytime one of those come on. Now those Miller for President commercials are hilarious.
What do you mean "is this a rip-off"? It's obvious. Alot of the youngsters don't remember the Lil one, but I do. I think that if the voice had been different, I wouldn't mind as much. To have a this obvious rip-off with this gratingly annoying voice is just gross.

Thirst is the man. Even though he might be a ripoff of Lil' Penny. I think Sprite is aiming more for the younger audience. That's why they got a little doll, doing the advertisment. Even though I think they have "Thirst" to attract the younger audience, it even caught my attention. Its not everyday you see a gangsta little doll talking to LeBron James. Afterall Lil' Penny is dead. And he's forgotten about. So... "Hey girls...Throw in reverse for Thirst"

I think it's absolutely hilarious. I have a job where I deal alot with marketing, so this stuff doesn't really phase me anymore. If I were to take a stab at the strategy behind it, I would probably equate the character type resurgence with the resurgence in the Retro industry. Kinda fits into that type of concept of taking something old and reworking it to fit with today's needs. N'est pas?

Wow, Shocked it took somebody so long to bring up the connection. Lil Penny made penny Hardaway super popular in the mid-90's. And thats basically what it was meant to do for Lebron James. The only difference is that Nike came up with LIL Penny. And sprite created "Thrist". But their basically the same thing. The concepts for the adds are the same. The guy doing the voice for thrist even tries to sound like Chris Rock when he did the LIL Penny voice.
Sorry guys this is off the topic but has anyone seen that beer commercial and some dude is rappin while white choclate and other players playin ball and stuff;well near the end doesnt it sound like the rapper is saying beaten your s**t,because thats what it sounds like to me.

one thing is that lil penny had an ego that added publicity to hardaway, but thirst ahsnt really donrb that yet.
Ehh, I don't really like Thirst, but I'm not gonna complain, I don't care enough about it to. BTW, i may stand alone on this one, but I personally HATE those miller beer commercials, and yes, i do care enough about it to complain .
