Who Goes To The Expansion Draft? I obviously don't know much about the Celtics, so I'm not going to comment on this. It'd be a waste of all our time. However, I'm really interested in hearing what Celtic fans (or basketball fans in general) think about the Celtics and the expansion draft. The main rule of the upcoming draft is that each team may keep eight players but must leave the rest for Charlotte to pick from. The Bobcat's have a salary cap at 31.5 million. Who will the Celtics send into the expansion draft? Who will they protect?
I think that most probably the Boston Celtics 8 protected players in the draft will be: 1) Paul Pierce 2) Mark Blount(FA?) 3) Jiri Welsch 4) Ricky Davis 5) Chucky Atkins 6) Jumaine Jones 7) Chris Mihm 8) Marcus Banks No i didnt Include Raef Lafrentz because he's an injury prone center and his salary isnt too friendly if the Celtics want to make some off season improvements, and they already got Chris Mihm, and Mark Blount(FA?) if he stays in Bean town.
Here's the protected list I'd have: 1. Paul Pierce - NO Brainer there 2. Chris Mihm 3. Brandon Hunter 4. Markus Banks 5. Ricky Davis 6. Jiri Welsh 7. Kendrick Perkins 8. ** McCarty will almost certainly be left unprotected and is also the most likely to be taken, If Charlotte takes anyone from the C's. He's a multi-positional player, with a friendly contract. Blount can't be protected, he's a FA. LaFrentz won't be protected, there's no point. No one in thier right mind would take on his contract, given the fact that he's not a franchise type player and has a history of injuries. It's not a slight for Raef to be left unprotected by Dannyboy, just good common sense to not waste a protection spot on him. ** Atkins is one of the guys that might be left unprotected, because he has a fairly large contract for what he brings to the team. He'll be one of the guys that Dannyboy will have to think about long and hard. **Jumaine Jones is also a guy that we aren't quite sure if Dannyboy values and if so, how much. He'd be a guy like Waltah that could easily be scooped up by Charlotte because of his versitily and freindly cap numbers. **Micheal Stewart might be someone protected. Sadly, becuase his bloated contract will come in handy in future trades.

What is the ruling on restricted FA's (Mihm)? I assume you have to protect them if you are going to offer them a contract. Gotta agree on the list and Yogi. If the Cats wanted a PG, Atkins would be a candidate, but he's a little expensive, so look for them to gamble on Jumaine's talent and low paycheck. McCarty has wisely made statements to the effect of not wanting to go to another rebuilding effort, so that might shy them away from him.
Who are the 8 players you want the Celtics to protect in the expansion draft? for me its... (in no particular order) 1. Paul Pierce - no explination needed 2. Ricky Davis - as much as I hate him, he is a good offensive thread if he can just fit into Rivers' system. 3. Marcus Banks - Good young PG for the Future. 4. Brandon Hunter - He has like the 5th best points/rebounds ratio for 48 minutes in the entire league last year. Granted he never played a full 48 minutes in a game, but he is a great young player with a lot of potential. 5. Raef LaFrentz - Even with his huge contract, we can't look like we got nothing from the Walker deal (even though we practically did, we can't just let LaFrentz walk) 6. Jiri Welsch - Proved to be a good scorer as well, has a lot of potentiall for the future. 7. Chucky Atkins - Solid PG at the end of the year, he can help bring up Banks. 8. Kendrik Perkins/Chris Mihm - Toss up. If the Celtics re-sign Blount, id put him in the final spot ahead of Perkins/Mihm.
Pierce Davis Welsch Banks Hunter Perkins Mihm Toss up, depends on trades I don't agree with you on Lafrentz, I would much rather let Perkins and Mihm play and lose Lafrentz and his contract, than let him take minutes away from the younger guys. And Ainge did get Welsch out of the deal, so it won't be a complete wash in the trade of Walker.
