Okay so we all love this game but this game needs to be improved and with the new collective bargaining agreement coming up and the old huge contracts given out before it coming to an end, the level of play should improve with the stakes being higher now that contracts and money is a lot more scarce. What can we do to improve the league? All comments and opinions are wanted. I will go first. 1. I think a minor league is necessary. It has to be put in place to put young players in it. Bostjan Nachbar, Gerald Wallace, Dahntay Jones, Skita, Kendrick Perkins and so forth. If teams have first through 3rd year players who are not going to be in the rotation unless 4 or 5 guys get injured then they need to be playing and working on their game in the D League if for no other reason than improving the skillset of the younger players. Now in the D-League there should be a few stipulations: a. Practices should be two a days in the preseason and 3 hour practices during the season (or even longer) b. They should only work on fundamentals. Shooting, Passing, Dribbling, for all players playing the 1 through the 4. c. All Centers should have to work their post moves, footwork, positioning and coordination until they are either dead or they get it right. d. If guys have attitudes or dog it, they can be left relegated to the bench and kicked out of practice. Meaning if you are not committed to improving your game you will sooner find yourself out of the league. Now for the games (in the D-League) a. They should always be looking to run after every missed shot and if not should be instructed on how to properly run a half court set. Full of flex cuts, backdoor screens, hedge moves. Guys should be rewarded with playing time for looking for good shots and not contested fadeaways. b. Shotclock should be 30 seconds. It should always reset to 20 after fouls. c. 3 point line should be further back (only in the D-League). Force guys not to rely on making such deep shots unless they can truly hit from 27 feet out. This will bring the mid-range game back. d. Start calling all flops as blocking fouls. Get them out of here. Force guys to learn to move their feet if they really want to draw fouls. No more of this flopping on minimal contact. e. Call travelling and call palming. The players will adjust because of it. f. Call 3 seconds and eliminate handchecking and bumping of cutters. g. No zones and bring back illegal defense. h. Penalize guys who want to play one on one only by taking away playing time. These improvements should clean up the game because these things will be ingrained in these guys heads before they even make it to the bigs. I have other ideas for the NBA itself, but I want to hear some responses first. My real problem with the NBA right now is the Eastern Conf. Not the fact that a lot of the teams have poor records, but they have poor records and are not fun to watch because they are putrid offensively (with lots of turnovers and missed open shots). That needs to improve for the League to get better as much of the viewers are still on the East Coast. Thoughts and comments? Please no one sentence responses.
lol Yeah I'd like to see a fantasy draft too... I've heard plans about having an improved form of the NBDL (joke league). It would certainly help. Maybe if Darko Milicic had that he wouldn't have missed that wide open dunk... I agree though. The NBA needs improvements...
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">To improve the NBA by alot, have a fantasy draft!</div> No. Next. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Whats the NBDL for? I'm serious.</div> To help players develop that are not ready for the NBA.
I don't know when the league will improve. They've been trying so many things for 10 years now. The scoring just goes down more every single year it seems. It will be awhile before the league be back to at least the 92-93 season. Well at least 10-15 teams average over a 100 points. Not just 2 to 3.
I think that the NBA should take away zone defense.Thats why scoring averages and low scoring games haved ocurred a lot this year.Man to man is also more exciting you can see 1 on 1 matchups everygame.Maybe one day the NBA will take it back.
I think cutting the shot clock from 24 to 20 could make it more interesting. See what the offense does. See if it's more hectic or if it could adjust.
24 is short enough, they shouldn't shorten the shot clock or the 8 second half court, any shorter and the game would be too rushed. I dont think that the scoring in the league is too low right now, were still seeing good bball, and teams are just overall improving on defense. You can't take away teams defensive ability; other than taking away zone which is just taking away from the defensive aspect of the game. There is alot more shot blocking with zone, and thats always exciting.
I think the high school kids are the biggest problem. Barkley says it best when he state that the draft was designed for bad teams to get immediate help. Teams are too worried about picking up the next superstar that they gamble on unproven talent. Even one year in college can do wonders for a player. Just think about how you play ball in high school. There's tons you can still learn. Different defensive schemes and different offensive styles. Playing under someone like Coach K, Pitino, or Williams can elevate a players game to a new level.

Well that would help the NBA a ton.
Yea, it may help it on some terms, but, it may also hurt it. Think if the NBA had a rule like the NFL in that you had to attend college for, we'll say a year. Now, go back to during the season and look at the Cavs. Their attendance would have been next to nothing without LeBron. Their record would have been worse than the Magic without him. They would have basically not been much of anything without him. So, the straight out of high school thing, some people may hate it, but, I don't think it's bad. I think that it's good for the NBA because of people like LeBron. When someone gets so hyped like that coming straight out of high school, it makes people watch. It makes people see what all the hype is about. So, that's why I don't think that you should make the players go to college for at least a year/
We've had a couple of thread on this before...and i always bring up that I've always been an advocate of the 1-and-1 for freethrows...

If he is ready, he is ready, and no one should stop him. The only problem is, everyone thinks there LeBron or Amare or KG, when they are not.
for every Lebron,Amare,KG or Kobe we have 10 Korleone Youngs. The bottomline is that the NBA is a buisness and they have the right to set guidelines on employment in their 'company' in order to make it better. Look around your area and enquire into jobs and you will see the same thing anywhere..i.e age limits, minimum requirements among other things. All of these young guys coming in from high school and 1 year of college or drastically helping in dropping the quality of basketball. By insituting an age limit we are insuring that in the long run the quality will go up and the players that come in have at least a grasp on the fundamentals of the game.
How about RAISE the shotclock to say 30 seconds, so we actually see ball movement. The game as is is so rushed, that many plays become All-Star vs. Defense. Now, if one player only touches the ball, we've lost the team aspect. It think, given more time, ball movement would be promoted, and make a more exciting league. Look at NCAA, it's way more fun to watch, because you see more and better passes being made!

You don't need a degree to get into the NBA, all you need to know is how to play basketball and there is no entrance exam you can take to prove it, you're not going to study basketball in college and most players don't much improve in college anyway... I mean explain how those 4 guys are already top 10 players in the NBA without the benifit of learning the fundamentals in college... The way I see it basketball players learn a whole lot more and a lot faster in the pros against elite competition than against kids they'll dominate night in and night out... The drop in the quality of basketball has nothing to do with high school kids and 1 year college players, since for the most part the best players in the NBA are those players... I'd say it's expansion and simply put, overall talent is on a decline, a year in college isn't going to help that...
College is a joke for most of these professional athletes. I'd be willing to bet 90% of them wouldn't get accepted into the colleges they attended, if they didn't play a sport. Even if they did attend, I'd be willing to bet they'd fail or be kicked out. College is for learning academics, not basketball, and the basketball program should, in my opinion, only be open to those who would attend the school for academic reasons.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">We've had a couple of thread on this before...and i always bring up that I've always been an advocate of the 1-and-1 for freethrows...</div> I agree with that statement by notMuchgame, thats one thing I loved about playing high school basketball the one and ones. Plus with the one and one, we can watch Shaq or Duncan only brick one free throw and not two. And who ever doesn't think an age limit would help the NBA is crazy. They are basically 3 guys that came straight out of HS to the pros that made an impact in their first year: KG, Kobe, and Amare. And you would be crazy if you didn't believe that guys like Deshawn Stevenson, Travis Outlaw, Desanga Diop, Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry, etc., etc. wouldn't of been better if they would have a year or maybe two of college ball under their belts. Just my two cents.
I definitely would like to see the zone defenses eliminated. Why change the defensive style that has existed for so long? I am also in favor of an age limit for the draft. Another thing: It seems too much emphasis is placed on having a great body over great skills. Too many teams would try to take an athlete with "potential" than a skilled player who doesn't fit the NBA's "perfect mold." The league has proven that you can succeed with SKILLS (Larry Bird) and fail with athleticism. I for one would not draft anyone who hasn't played college ball.
