<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Trip:</div><div class="quote_post">Lebron is not a PG. He should be playing SG or SF 5 years from now. Wade might not really turn out to be something as well. It's better to bet on proven stars who have consistent seasons than some rookies who have not yet proven themselves, really.</div> Personally, I think Wade has proven himself. If you look at what he did in the playoffs, I think that says it all. He hit all the clutch shots and he willed them back into that game 6 against the Pacers. If it wasn't for him, they would never have made it that far. And, I like what one of the people on NBA Fastbreak said last night (I believe it was Kevin Frazier), if rookie of the year voting was today, would LeBron still have gotten it? My thought, I don't think so, I would have gone with Wade because he was absolutely phenomenal in the playoffs.
Personally I say Kidd, Nash, Davis, Bibby and Parker, if we are talking pure PG skills. Here's the problem with many scoring PGs, either by team need (Marbury) or because they are selfish (Francis), they carry the scoring load and as a result they aren't as good at creating for other players. Their job is to distribute the ball and direct the game. A good PG sees the court and thinks two or three steps ahead. That's what made John Stockton so special. You had it to see him play in his prime. If someone was open, you could bet Stock will find him with an assist. Same with Kidd. But if you are your team primary option, you have to concentrate on points first. Why isn't Iverson a PG? He has the size, the handling skills, the speed and an underrated basketball mind. I would even say than a scoring PG is a detriment to their team. I can remember only two PGs in the modern era who won titles while leading their teams in scoring, and they are both Hall of Famers.
Baron is definatly MVP material in the next coming years. But when it comes down to it, Jason Kidd is the best damn point guard I have ever seen play. Baron seems more offensive minded and thinks "shoot" before "pass". Jason Kidd just makes players around him better. He can get his teammates the ball no matter what the situation is. During clutch time Jason Kidd will hit the big shot. On the break one on one, you can forget about it, Jason Kidd will make you look like a fool.
It seems that Bron and Wade should be 2's until they prove they're better playing point anything else.
Baron Davis is not the best PG. Jason Kidd is. You are talking about a PG that's been in the NBA Finals couple of times with the same team hes had for years.
Wheres the love for Sam Cassell? He's having his best season yet, helping the TWolves advance in the playoffs. Along with everyone else, I agree Jason Kidd is better than Baron Davis. Davis is a solid PG, but he jacks up too many 3's.
^I agree. As a point guard Baron does not make the best decisions, just look at his league leading three point field goal attempts. I would rate JKidd, Nash and Cassell over him in terms of pure point guards. Cassell is looking a little weaker though after the playoff series with Sacramento. Doug Christie owned him.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting sartre2025:</div><div class="quote_post">After tonight's 0-8 performance against the Pistons, you may want to reassess that position.</div> A healthy Kidd is still the best point guard in the NBA, the last time a PG was as good as Kidd was Penny Hardaway before he got his infatuation with SG. It's probably close to how it was back then to, take Jordan out and Penny is the best guard in the game, take Kobe out and Kidd is the best guard in the game. That's how I see it, and again, when healthy.
My dad once told me a story and it went like this:- "Son, when you get older you'll see how loyalty is the most important thing in life. Look at me I'm still with your mother and she satisfies me to this day. When you shop at the same store you get a loyalty card. So remember this when choosing who the best point gaurd in the league is son." I will follow my Dad's advice and I would still pick Penny Hardaway. But Sam Cassell and Bibby are better then Davis. Haters watch the play-offs!"
Sam Cassell and Jason Kidd have struggled these past games, but that shouldn't determine if Baron Davis is better or not. Last time I checked his team was no longer in the playoffs. Injuries play a huge factor in success, and it's obvious the two are suffering from just that. Jason Kidd > Sam Cassell > Steve Nash > Baron Davis Mike Bibby is debatably a better player as well, due to his clutch play and overall performance.
The only point guard who is arguably better than Baron is Kidd. Sammy had an excellent year, and is a close third, but putting him on the second team over BDiddy was absurd. And all this talk about Francis, Marbury and Nash? Come ON! Please. Ranking them in their OVERALL abilities, I'd rank them thus: 1. Baron Davis 2. Jason Kidd 3. Sam Cassell 4. Stephon Marbury 5. Chauncey Billups Baron passes almost as well as Kidd, check the numbers for the past three seasons before refuting that(I'm not saying as good, but almost as good), and he actually a dependable scoring threat. Kidd gets most of his points on penetration since he's not much of a shooting threat, which is exactly what his team needs. Baron balances the inside force of his team with his outside play, but can still penetrate. Him scoring 23 points a game isn't a knock on his pure pg skills - Magic Johnson did it, so why not Baron? Baron had precious little scoring help - Magloire was the only consistent help, with David Wesley and Mashburn having constant injuries. As far as all other numbers go, there's no other pg in the league minus Kidd who is really better than Davis in more than one major statistical category. ps - Ice, I don't think Bibby is even one of the top ten point guards in the league. I submit Nash, Francis, Parker, Payton and Wade in addition to the above five as all being better.
I think one of the things that puts Baron up top above Nash etc is his ability to defend, like Kidd he's a great on ball defender, also has the ability to pick passing lanes, and is a pretty good rebounder. Now the other guys (Nash, Marbury, Cassell) aren't as good rebounders or defenders. <u>I have them ranked as:</u> 1) Kidd 2) Starbury 3) Baron 4) Cassell 5) Nash
Yeah it's true that Kidd is the best until proven otherwise, but the main point of this thread was to show that Baron has skills and may not get the national attention he deserves.
There are plenty of good young point guards in the league, so its tough to say that Baron Davis is a clear favorite. Four years from now, I could see any of these players being a All-NBA first team selection: - Tony Parker - Dwayne Wade - Baron Davis - Stephon Marbury - Steve Francis If I had to choose one, I'd go with Tony Parker. Francis had a bad year, though he showed flashes of brilliance in the playoffs. I'll have to see how he performs next year. Marbury might be past his prime, not sure. In his first year playing as a point guard (and as a rookie) Dwayne Wade performed well beyond expectations. Baron Davis is a gifted player, but I really don't think of him as a team player. After losing the Miami Heat, he was saying how he wanted to come out and prove himself next year and show that he deserved to be considered one of the top players in the game. It's like his main motivation is proving himself to be the best player, as opposed to improving his team the most. That's not the right mentality for a point guard. If he can change his attitude and cut down his three-pointing shooting by about half, then I think he could definitely be considered the best in the league. But he's not there yet.
Not in order. If it was Gary Payton will still be #1 Gary Payton Baron Davis Jason Kidd Mike Bibby Bobby Jackson Dwane Wade Steve Nash Sam Cassell LeBron James Tony Parker Steve Francis
I think Baron is up there but there are many up there w/ him. For example : Francis, Nash, Crawford, Wade, etc.
