Thorn is a gambler by nature, a man who has made significant chances to a team that was already pretty successful.

Now that it has been less successful, expect the changes to be more drastic. Here are some of the questions Thorn and his team will be answering in the coming weeks and months:</div>

    thanks for the link Trust.

#1) What will be the result of K-Mart shopping?
~i really can't see kmart wearing a different jersey next year or in the years to come. the article mentions that he could just play next year out and then become a non-restricted FA and sign with whoever he would lke, but i dont see that happening unless if he wants to leave jersey. this summer teams like detroit, atlanta, dallas are going to make a pitch to kmart but we can and will match any offer. the only way i don't see kmart in a nets jersey is via trade for a kg-like player, there are none out there therfore he will remain in nj.

#2) Speaking of which ... does Lawrence Frank get new business cards?
~He should come back as coach. there really is no other coach i can see taking over. he has showed that he is nba smart and is a gym-rat and has respect of his players. there is really only one coach that i would like to have and could understand taking franks place would be pat reilly. i've just been a fan of his and he is a veteran coach who you know wants to get back into coaching. our team already has a nice core of guys who have grown up and know how to play defense. i think he would be able to take us to the championship level. the chances of that happening are slim, but you never know. if not him, then frank will be back.

    #3) The Kerry Kittles Question.
~like i've stated before, i like kerry as much as the next nj fan, i think it is time for a change. the article did mention a good point about paying him 9.8mill for averaging 13pts the past 4 seasons and max he averaged was 17pts n '97-'98. it was interesting that the article suggested that lu become a start and he has been a productive starter, but i think we need to get younger and quicker at that position and get more of a gunner. unless if we can get a new guy who is a little young and have him come off the bench for a year then start him like we did with RJ. whatever happens, there needs to be a new SG when the season starts. i heard Rod on Mike and the Maddog's show and it sounded like he is very loyal to kk and likes him a lot because of his defense and he had an ok series. but lets be honest, we need to at least shop him. somebody will want him and we could get maybe two players for him or a player and draft pick. i just hope rod doesnt let his personal feelings towards kerry come infront of business. we all love kk, but the time has come. he has had his chances and he is fading away, we can't afford that b/c kidd is also aging.

#4) Do they lock up the Class of 2001?
~the article said it, wait till '05 when deke's is off our books then sign RJ and possibly JC up. i still don't think JC is the best center for us to have but i understand that money might cause use to not be able to get a better all around center. zo was supposed to be that and if he misses next year, that will be 2yrs missed and he will come off the books too rod said on Mike/Maddog show today. but u know zo will most likely try and make a comeback, he saw sean elliot do it with SA- so he will probably figure why not him. but thats another story.

#5) Is there some spare change around to pursue free agents?
~i don't know the money situation with the nets. i would think that some fa's might look at NJ and want to play with kidd and see that the nets are close to winning a championship and they think they can help. there are some players who don't care so much about the money and just want to win a ring and maybe they will see that jersey can provide a championship run for them. hopefully there is some money to spend besides the mid-level exception for next year, not money for the following years but this year.

i hope rod really does do something this summer via trades or FA. i have a feeling that we will most likely return with the same starting 5 and get bench players. he has to really evaluate each player individually and look at what they have, what they have given, and what they could have to give to this organization in the future. i would really be suprised if we don't get a big/known player, not just some guy who is a FA for cheap.

also, ratner better not be a wussie and be conservative. he better allow rod to spend, spend and spend again. if the nets move to bklyn, by the time they would actually move i dont think he would want a franchise that hasn't been in the championship picture leading up to the move. that would be bad for business. plus kidd will be that much older and u gotta think that you would want the nets to have a championship before the move so they will sell more tickets and business will be more of a success. rod said on Mike/Maddog show that ratner seemed like he wanted a championship type team he said that ratner said all the right things. so he better not get T-rex arms and not dig into that wallet.

This is what they need to do. they had the right plan when they got Zo but it didnt work out. Kenyon is good but they need stability and he is not that stablen that is why he doesnt deserve max salary.

    1. try to sign kittles to a 2 to 3 year deal for decent aamount of money
    2. try to pick up a really shooting guard (I'm not saying Kittles isnt but he would be so much better of the bench those are what his numbers are posting anyway)
    A. Ray Allen (creates a half court game)
    B. Jalen Rose (half court game and backup point guard and small forward)
    C. Still thinking about that (but Paul Pierce would be nice)
    3. Pick up a decent center cause Jason Collins isnt the answer. The Nets need to do is run the 3 headed monster rotation like the bulls did when they had mj
    A. Mehmet Okur
    B. Carlos Boozer
    C. Keon Clark

    4. Try but it would be hard with the money situation and all but try to pick decent bench role players.
    1 Point guard
    1 shooting guard
    3 centers
    1 small forward
    1 power forward

heres how my team would look like:

    Starting 5

    PG - Jason Kidd
SG - Ray Allen or Jalen Rose
    SF - Richard Jefferson
PF - Kenyon Martin or Someone else
C - Mehmet Okur or Calvin Cato or Alonzo (if he is able to make a comeback)

    Bench

    Derek Fischer
    Kerry Kittles
    Lucious Harris
    Rodney Rogers
    Jason Collins
    Aaron Williams
Isiah Rider (take the chance can't get any worse)
    Brian Scalibrine
Zoran Planinic or Tamar Slay (they both can be good just needs time)

This would be a good in expensive team

He is the heart of this team. Their isnt any bigs avaible that are better then him or fit into our system as well as he does imo.

Why add more years to Kerry Kittles?,just for him to ride the bench. Kerry has been a solid 2 guard for us since 96 but to reach where we want to go its time for a changed.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">A. Ray Allen (creates a half court game)

How are we going to add cats with max contracts & then sign K-Mart to max contract. Plus we dont have anything those teams want so what would we trade to get them.

I would like to see how much money Stephen Jackson is asking for. He already knows the motion offensive system because he was here when B.Scott first brought it to the team. He can create his own shot, He takes & makes big shots. And he been where we are trying to get.

And then we sign Fred Hoiberg (a designated shooter) all he will wont is the free agent vetran min.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">3. Pick up a decent center cause Jason Collins isnt the answer. The Nets need to do is run the 3 headed monster rotation like the bulls did when they had mj

Okur is not a legitmate Center, And Boozer is mos def not a center. Keon Clark can play center in the east but we dont need to sign any bigmen coming off injury filled seasons. We must learn from our mistakes.

Derek Fisher would help us out shooting wise but he doesnt know how to run a offense as a Floor leader. He plays in the triangle offense, all the point guard is a spot up shooter not a decision maker.

Why keep all those useless big bodies, they are our problem.

Isiah Rider? Can you say eddie griffen all over again? not worth the risk.

I wouldnt make any type of moves that would add or mess up our core group of RJ, K-Mart,& Jason kidd. I think adding a guy who has been a go to guy all his career like Ray Allen would do that. I doubt he would want to be a second to the likes of Martin & RJ. But they are our future so they have to stay our core players. And Jalen Rose's personality isnt the best for this team.

I would make a few moves to just add some possibly more productive bigs. And a shooter & a 3rd half court scoring option after RJ, & Martin. And a few high % shooters.

Like I said I would see what Stephen Jackson is asking for. And then sign a cheap but reliable shooter. Hoiberg is probably the best avaible imo.

Then I would try to make a few trades to add depth to the team. One trade I would make that is very possible would be....

    A trade with the Cavs
Kerry Kittles and Jason Collins for Kevin Ollie, Kedrick Brown,Tony Battie

Why Do I think this trade is possible- The Cavs have made it clear that they feel LBJ best position will be playing the 3. And they have needed shooting all season. Kerry Kittles fits both of those needs imo.

How does those Cavs addition help us Well

Kevin Ollie- is that solid point guard to back up Jason Kidd. He can run our offense for about 15 minutes again.

Kedrick Brown- Well when RJ goes to the bench we seem to lose some of that athletism at the SF spot. And he adds some much need youth to our wing

Tony Battie-adds moiblity & athletism to our frontline, something we dont really have right now with our current bigs outside of Martin.

The 2nd move our would mak would be with our cross town counter part.
    The Knicks
    Lucious Harris
    Aaron Williams

    for Kurt Thomas

Why do I think this trade is possible With the Knicks expected to pursue high priced bigs like Rasheed, Dampier even OKur has been rumored, they will have to get rid of Kurt Thomas.

What does Thomas bring us - A double-digit scorer, close to double digit rebounds, tuffness, heart, & solid on the ball defense. Kenyon wont have to guard the best bigs on the other team as much anymore

So here what a team or a similar team would look like for me...

    PG-Jason Kidd/Kevin Ollie
    SG-Stephen Jackson/Fred Hoiberg
    SF-Richard Jefferson/Kedrick Brown
    PF- K-Mart/Rogers/Scalibrine
    C- Kurt Thomas/Tony Battie

I would draft another shooter in the 2nd round or sign a another vetran shooter like Wesley Person or a combo guard like Damon Jones for the vetran min.

Put Zoran Planinic, on injury reserve maybe try & work him on to the active roster as the season goes along.

And Tamar Slay & Brandan Armstrong are gone thru FA.

    interesting points hen.

i like the s.jackson idea of bringing him back here, but fred hoidberg i would doubt leave minnesota especially of how good the t'wolves got. he is loved there and if he would take the minimum here, he woudl take it there and stay there.

thomas/battie i dont see as our asnwers for a center position. i would definitly love having battie as a bench players b/c he is a good role player and solid player. thomas in the nets/knicks stayed away from the low post. he likes to shoot a lot of jumpers. yea he can make most of them, but he wouldnt fit our center position, maybe as a backup to kmart yea, but center no. i've been a fan of erik dampier. he had good #'s in the western conference and his #' are better than any of our centers can do...maybe even combined. he avg 12.3ppg and 12rpg. forget the ppg, but the rpg is what we need. we take bad shots and miss our fare share, imagine if we had a guy who can give us second chance opportunities and play against some of the better centers in the league. we need a center who can basically focus on rebounding and defense and eventually he will get some points. he also had 1.85bpg last season and avgs 1.61bpg which can help kmart and his 1.36bpg. kmart needs help and i think dampier can be that help. of course there is the money issue of whether we could sign him or not.

ray allen issue. i know we want kmart and rj to be our 1-2punch, but it cant hurt to have ray allen as a 3. he can shoot the 3 and can spread the defense. i dont think he has an ego where he would complain about his touches and points because we would be winning. the more threats we have on the floor, the more teams have to worry about each individual and people will get wide open shots. he can help us in the half court. he is good where if we are really slumping he can create his own shot or create a shot for someone else like rj is starting to do. he is more consistant as a shooter than what we have now. he is also a good defender and i think whoever comes here will improve their defense just being around kidd and kmart and the philosophy of our team that defense makes us run.

i dont think that the nets will trade lu. he is an ok guy coming off the bench, he just had a bad season. he knows our system. but i also understand that he isnt the quickest guy and he is getting up there in age and can't guard some of the faster and better sg's in the league when he is in for kerry.
i still dont think debo is our answer either for a bench player. he is a big body who doesnt have any low post moves. he likes to take jumpers and 3's but he doesnt make it consistantly. he also seems to lose focus sometimes on offense and defense. he sometimes goes to the basket and gets a charge call b/c he doesnt control himself and if he does try and have a low post game he just chucks it up. he makes ticky-tack fouls for a guy who has been in the league as long as he has. he is a sg in a pf body, we dont need that.
i think we may be able to get something for kerry because he will come off the books next year and a team might want a guy like that. thats what atlanta did so maybe they will do it again in the summer. we are going to have to make some trades and some smart trades. i have faith in rod that he will improve our team and not let another summer go by not doing anything like he did this past summer (yea we got zo to keep kidd, but we knew zo was a big risk and we are paying for it.) i would be completely shocked if we dont have 3-5new faces come summer camp.

yeah your right henacy but i still think that the nets need a change. Yeah when byron scott to over her he brought over the old school west coast offense. And in todays game that just doesnt work, it may work against some teams but against any legitimate team in the NBA like Spurs, Lakers, Minessota, Sacremento, Detriot, and Indiana all the games are become half court games that we can't keep up with. Regardless when Kidd comes off the floor it totally becomes a half court game unless you get that point guard that knows how to pass which is hard to find. Thats why all the teams notice once kidd comes out it puts the nets in a half court game that they can't contend to thats why Detriot knew they could let us shoot any time cause with their defense and our half court game the nets cant compete. Yeah you are right though stephen jackson would be nice to have. But Derek fisher would be nice to have cause kidd comes out he can put points one board which he is not able to do in LA with shaq kobe malone and payton. I would take kmart and make a trade to like cleveland for Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Ira Newble (these 2 combined can put up the ponts and rebounds that kenyon puts on the table). Cause for the money that kmart is going to ask for is not going to be worth it espceially if we want to keep RJ next season. Rose and Allen i think are going to be free agents this season. but there are much more options this season rather then paying kmart out. but dont get me wrong, i do like kmart. but what he brings is just not enough and it showed this season.

kmart has improved every single year out of his four years. this year he was slowed down by injuries and he will be a solid 20-10 guy within the next two years and thats what we need. we don't need to trade kmart because there are good FA's out there who hopefully we can get w/o having to trade him. kmart/kidd/rj is a great core to have. you have two young talented players who are going to possibly make all-nba team in their careers and make multiple all-star appearances. kmart is going to come back with more moves and have his jumper in tuned to make him a bigger threat and help us win more games and hopefully win a title.

if any of you can get the Star Ledger, get it because there is a 2page Nets discussion about who is a FA, and what our current roster looks liek with salaries and years left.

I think Fred might be avaible because with Wally there for a full season, Hoiberg role on that team wont be need. They signed him for the vetran min only because they knew at the start of the season Wally would miss alot of time.

If Iam correct every team gets exemption money to sign 2 players to the vetran min. Well the Wolves are going to have to sign Hassell again with part of the vetran min. And then they are going to probably have to use the other part on adding a legimate big body. which means their wont be any money left on the table for Hoiberg.

I agree he took way to many jumpers in that series but Thomas is an extremely effective player in the High post which would help space the floor for K-mart to get alot of opportunities deep in the low post one on one against defenders.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">yea he can make most of them, but he wouldnt fit our center position, maybe as a backup to kmart yea, but center no</div>.

Offensively he does fit imo. In the Nets motion offense it sets up alot of good looks around the free throw area for the Centers. And thats Thomas best shot. And on D, he can guard just about every big in the East, granted he doesnt have the size to contain the likes of Shaq or Duncan for a 7 game series if we were to meet up against those teams ever again in the finals. But at least he will make them work on the other end of the floor.

And I think Thomas could add a new dimension to this team. The Pick & Roll, I can see him and Jefferson using the pick & roll very effectively in the half court.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">i've been a fan of erik dampier. he had good #'s in the western conference and his #' are better than any of our centers can do...maybe even combined. he avg 12.3ppg and 12rpg. forget the ppg, but the rpg is what we need. we take bad shots and miss our fare share, imagine if we had a guy who can give us second chance opportunities and play against some of the better centers in the league. we need a center who can basically focus on rebounding and defense and eventually he will get some points. he also had 1.85bpg last season and avgs 1.61bpg which can help kmart and his 1.36bpg. kmart needs help and i think dampier can be that help. of course there is the money issue of whether we could sign him or not</div>.

Exactly, how can we sign him, the only way the Nets could probably pick Dampier up would be in a sign & trade with golden state, which means they would probably want one of our key parts like Martin(in a double sign & trade) or Rj. And I dont think so. And Iam not a big Fan of players who have career years when their contracts are ending. It makes me worry about there true ablities & motives.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">ray allen issue. i know we want kmart and rj to be our 1-2punch, but it cant hurt to have ray allen as a 3. he can shoot the 3 and can spread the defense. i dont think he has an ego where he would complain about his touches and points because we would be winning. the more threats we have on the floor, the more teams have to worry about each individual and people will get wide open shots. he can help us in the half court. he is good where if we are really slumping he can create his own shot or create a shot for someone else like rj is starting to do. he is more consistant as a shooter than what we have now. he is also a good defender and i think whoever comes here will improve their defense just being around kidd and kmart and the philosophy of our team that defense makes us run</div>.

This Nets team needs a little toughness & heart, Ray is nice but sometimes I think he lacks both to be honest. And he had selfishness issues during his Bucks days, so Iam not for sure he will be to quick to fall back and let RJ and K-mart get most of the touches.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">i dont think that the nets will trade lu. he is an ok guy coming off the bench, he just had a bad season. he knows our system. but i also understand that he isnt the quickest guy and he is getting up there in age and can't guard some of the faster and better sg's in the league when he is in for kerry</div>.

Yes he is getting old, & we need some youth & atletism to replace him. I love Lu, him & KK are the only 2 players left from my 97-98' Nets but change must come. Everybody on this team must be open to being traded with the exception of Jefferson, Martin, & kidd. of course every wont be traded but everone must be on the block just in case something good comes up.

Man you dont know, if it was up to me Rogers would be on the 1st boat up the henry hudson, down the jersey shore sent packing. But he has no market value what so ever.

Teams arent going to be knocking down Rob Thorn's door asking about an aged, out of shape combo forward, who has lost the ablity to do the one thing he could do well at the NBA level which is score/shoot the rock. We are probably stuck with Rogers for the last year of his contract.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">i think we may be able to get something for kerry because he will come off the books next year and a team might want a guy like that. thats what atlanta did so maybe they will do it again in the summer. we are going to have to make some trades and some smart trades.</div>

Yeah KK is probably our only player with Market value outside of the core guys but even he wont land us a truely good player, he good get us some sloid parts if presented in a package deal similar to the one I said before.

Lets hope so, I heard Rob Thorn on Mike & the Mad dog right after the loss(the next day), and he sounded extremely serious about adding a big body & another scorer in the half court.

And he also said he is looking to build an offense that doesnt depend so much on Kidd getting us in the fastbreak. So hopefully we will have some solid changes.

I think they could get Ray Allen, the Sonics would want someone like K-Mart, strong, good, "big and tough". That way they could get someone even better like say, Brand, he could become their new Center or something like that or other. He'd be good as well, he could replace Kittles, or you could try to get Q-Rich for that position and try to get yourselves Brand along the way.

#1) What will be the result of K-Mart shopping?
I don't really like the sound of this. He's popular down in NJ and liked by the team. He's also a rarity, in terms of his attitude. He's all skill and emotion. You could get someone higher tier rated than him in the PF position market like say Brand? Meanwhile get yourselves a truly reliable center as well, K-Mart and Kittles could probably get you both or a really good one.

#2) Speaking of which ... does Lawrence Frank get new business cards?
He's young, he's proved himself. He has excellent strategies and a mentality that fits the team well. He did a much better job than Byron and even got them quite far in the playoffs in his first season. Not only that but he got them an awesome record as well as an awesome winning streak to boot.

    #3) The Kerry Kittles Question.
Too inconsistent. He's good yes, but does anyone know what he use to be like? He was an amazing all around player, such speed, skill and strength. Then he blew it all by doing it too much, you know like VC. Now he's pretty mediocre, quite slow, inconsistent, but still a good shooter. That's always a plus. Sometimes though it doesn't even look like he's trying. If you give him away with K-Mart, you could net yourselves some Primetime players.

#4) Do they lock up the Class of 2001?
I don't really know how to answer this one to be honest.

#5) Is there some spare change around to pursue free agents?
If K-Mart is gotten rid of, no need for Max Contract for him. Kittles too, out the door, out the window. Although with that happening, RJ's salary might go up as a result so I'm not too sure. I think you should seeing as you have the likes of Rodney Rodgers and Jason Collins who really aren't worth all that much anymore.

yea im glad rod mentioned that. he realized its fun to watch in the reg season and sometimes in the postseason, but to win a title we MUST be a good half court team. we don't need to be the best b/c our defense will still get us fastbreak points, but we must be able to score in halfcourt. if u look at all championship winners they all can play in the half court all game and win. may not be pretty, but needs to be effective.

if/when we trade somebody, we are definitly going to have to package at least two guys up and possibly be on the losing end of the trade just to get rid of those salaries and get somebody decent. if we pick up another big body, which we should be just depending on how skillful he is, debo will probably be out of the rotation completely or the last option. i think it is about time to really give veal a guarenteed spot in the rotation. he has done everything it seems we have asked for. we drafted him and he has improved his jumper and he does not complain about playing time. he did have a big game 5 in triple OT and shows you what he can do when he has time to play. he still could use a few more pounds of muscle to go up against guys like sheed who he had no shot in guarding.

the only teams that would take kerry would probably be teams who are out of the playoff race by trade deadline. around the trade deadline we would probably be able to trade him to a team like orlano or clippers or some team who doesnt have a shot and he will come off their books in a few months, thats what atlanta did this past year. i dont see kerry going anywhere by himself if a trade comes up unless another team really sees him as a must have b/c of his defense or maybe a team who just wants a guy who occasionally can make the 3 for one season. or maybe a team who lost a sg to FA or trade. either way as much as i like him, he must go but it is going to be tough;same thing with debo.

it is going to be very interesting how our summer turns out. there are a few questions out there and most of it comes down to whether ratner wants to spend money or not. i hope that we don't come back with basically the same roster. dont need to revamp the entire team, but need to make a few smart and impactful decisions. we are still going to have zoran, who knows what he will be next year;he has potential but the nba is totally different from eruo leagues and you can see that in his playing time this year that he was careless with the ball and wild, and we are going to have nenad krstic come over from europe who we cant count on to have and impact his first yr b/c he has to get used to the language, system and style of the nba. so thats two roster spots that are taken where we dont know what kind of production we will get from those two. thats two wasted bodies already, we can't have anymore. we need DEPTH!

if we wont be getting tim duncan or kg, then i dont see who is worth trading kmart for. he fits our style of play, he is only 25 and he will be a 20-10 player which is solid. he just needs to be able to control a game and should have the offense run through him. because if he gets more touches and gets more points, then dbl teams will start to happen and we all know if two guys are guarding one guy, there is one guy open. he is young and has potential, dont really see a good enough guy to get for him. im sure dallas would be interested though.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Magic Johnson:</div><div class="quote_post">I think they could get Ray Allen, the Sonics would want someone like K-Mart, strong, good, "big and tough". </div>

They said today in the New York Daily News, that inorder to get Ray we would mos def have to give up Kenyon Martin. I dont think you give up a talented bigman for a talented guard unless, the Martin contract talks just dont work out then you have to do a sign & trade, so we can get something in exchange K-Mart leaving. But I wouldnt do this trade under any other circumstances.

Throwback you are exactly right on the possiblity of trading K-Mart, if you not giving KG or Duncan(and those players are clerly not avaible) then Rob Thorn need not even think about trading K-Mart unless its a very last option due to contract problems.

did u get that NYDN article online or from actual newspaper? i would like to see that.

i highly doubt that this contract situation will be a problem. we know these two key things.
    1) kmart wants to stay in jersey for a long time. he likes everything here, the team, org, coach, front office, everything.
    2) rod wants him back for a long time.

there is only one man that can F this relationship up, thats bruce ratner. if he decides to F this franchise over and not allow money to be spent so he can save it for an arena or whatever he needs it for, then he will have a non-championship product possibly going to brooklyn.

Actually I got it from the Newspaper. They listed all the players the Nets might possibly interested in adding to the roster.

    Nice post guys.

I just hope that the new owners are willing to spend on KMart. Thorn made it clear that he wants KMart back. I really can't see the Nets getting a marquee SG. Talented big men are as rare as they come. They can't give up KMart. Signing him should be the team's first priority. However, I don't see KMart picking up the option to be an FA next year.

As for the big men, I understand that Zo's thinking of a comeback and Nenad would be available next season. I'd like to see Zo back but I'm sure he wouldn't be the starting C that we need. Nenad has potential and honed his skill in Yugoslavia but maybe they can still get someone who can play FC in the draft.

We definitely need an SG. As much as I love Kittles, we're not going anywhere with him. We have to trade him for at least a younger guy who's at least an average shooter.

What about a back-up PG? Zoran would definitely need to work on his playmaking skills this season. If he can't, we definitely need a back-up. Sometimes I miss Johnson coz he can run the offense when Kidd is on the bench.
