<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Another coach's scalp hangs from the belts of Warriors players. Mike Montgomery's is next. P.J. Carlesimo was fired because the agent for Antawn Jamison told Warriors owner Chris Cohan that Jamison would not sign another contract with the Warriors if Carlesimo remained. At the time, the Warriors thought Jamison would be the center of their rebuilding project, though he really was a player who should have been the sixth man, coming off the bench. So, Carlesimo was fired. Finally, Chris Mullin assessed the situation properly last summer and arranged the trade that sent Jamison to Dallas, where he is, of course, the sixth man. In the meantime, though, another coach was sacrificed, Dave Cowens. Though Cowens had proved in Charlotte that he can be a successful coach in the NBA, his Warriors players rebelled when he demanded they perform to NBA standards. Cowens was fired. When Eric Musselman came in, I wrote that then-Warriors GM Garry St. Jean should tell players that the coach was going to stay no matter what they thought. St. Jean never did and, of course, as soon as the players started complaining about their playing time, Musselman was history. It's hardly a unique story in the NBA when players get a coach fired. In the 1981-82 season, Magic Johnson's complaints got Paul Westhead fired after just 11 games. Jason Kidd is notorious for getting coaches fired. </div> http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...SPGRH6Q1II1.DTL
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting YayAreaFanatic:</div><div class="quote_post">Glenn Dickey always has a pessimistic view on things.</div>That is what I was thinking as well. But you still have to wonder. Warriors coaches have not faired well in the organization in the past decade. Combine that with the lack of success college coaches have had in the NBA. Despite these factors, I will still remain positive.
You gotta believe a coach's track record. None of the coaches Dickey mentioned had any drippings of success that Monty's had. PJ was Seton Hall's coach, whup-tee-doo, Cowen, well we'll never know about that guy. and Muss was a young coach who, just seemed to constanly be in conflict with someone... hopefully since we've unloaded some players, and have retained some players that Monty has had contact with, Dunleavy, Murphy, and partially J-Rich, he can build some positive relationships. Its also a good move having Monty in place before the lottery and draft. Last time, Muss was brought in after the draft and inevitably didn't have the sense of control Monty will have.
I was listening to KNBR last night and they had Mullin on the show to discuss his hiring of Montgomery and the reasons why Mussleman was fired. Mullin stressed communication, honesty, and respect as the underlying reasons why both moves were made. Musselman was making a lot of comments about his players behind their backs and he lost control of the "locker room" so to speak, because the comments were eventually getting back to those players. Mullin commended Musselman on the job he did, and said the Warriors couldn't have asked for much more on his success, with all the injuries and roster adjustments he had to manage. However, Mussleman didn't have the maturity Mullin is looking for and was not the player coach has in mind for his plans. Mullin wants a coach with the same philosophies as his college coach, Lou Carnesecca, but with an open mind on making adjustments to the NBA game. Montgomery fit his criteria and the relationship he has with Montgomery sealed the deal. They are both new to their jobs and they realize it's not going to be an overnight process. The way Mullin was describing the Warriors rebuilding, it sounds like this is a 3 to 4 year commitment and Mullin's job is going to be surrounding Montgomery with the personnel he needs to be successful. He also said Mitch Richmond has joined the organization, which is great to hear. I imagine he's going to have the same role Mullin first had when he came aboard. Mitch will probably work hands on with the players after games to give them pointers and help them work on their shooting mechanics. He will probably also do scouting and PR duties for the Warriors. Nice to see Rock Richmond back in the Bay Area, he was always a fan favorite during the Run TMC era. I've never been a Warrior fan, but I respect their fans and they deserve a turnaround for their team, and hopefully Mullin can make it happen.

PJ's first season as an NBA head coach he had a winning record, which is a big accomplishment compared to what Montgomery has done. Musselman won numerous games and titles in almost every minor league he coached before coming to the NBA. And you have to think that coaching in the minor-leagues would get you a lot of good experience for the pros, more-so than college too. And I want to say that more minor league coaches that have come into the league have had more success that previous college coaches, however i could be wrong about that. And Dave Cowens had a lot of success with the Hornets. And what exactly has Mike Montgomery done that is so great? I agree he is a great college coach, there is no doubt about that. He's arguably the best college coach in the NCAA with the talent he gets. But he has never translated his coaching to wins when they counted the most in the NCAA tourny. And I think Musselman had great relationship with Murphy, and JRich(last season anyway) and Musselman is the perfect coach for Dunleavy. I will take coaches who can motivate and get their teams to play hard and win, over a team that has good relationships with players. Relationships with players don't mean anything. Look at Greg Popovic and his relationships with his players. He is consistantly on Parker's, Ginoboli's, Hedu's, Duncan's, and anybody else's butt who doesn't do what is expected. The you come here to the Warriors where Musselman does a little bit of that and you get a cry baby out of Dunleavy saying that Musselman is a bad coach. I am going to try to be positive about Mike Montgomery, but it's going to take a lot to tell me that he's a better fit here than Musselman.
Montgomery has the philosophy that can change the way the warriors play as a team if the players are willing to work with him and be patient. He's made great players out of mediocre players by teaching the fundamentals of basketball and teamwork. Musselman has at least set the wheels in motion for guys to play hard, but he lacked organization and execution. Monty has got what I've been asking for since this entire season which is x's and o's! Now we'll get to see who the primadonnas on this team are if they can't fit within a system. Yes, I said it "We have a system!"

I wish I would have heard Mullin's interview. Was it on the Razor and Mr. T's show?
Why do coaches have to be old guy's with experience and crap. Musselman has that young man's attitude. Players will always complain about the coach. It's been going on forever and it'll never stop. What I like about Musselman was that he's not as conventional as most coaches. Since he's fairly young I thought that he'd be more understanding of the players. I guess Mullin is just old fashioned? Doesn't it suck when you get screwed over by your boss even though you're doing the right things. Just because you disagree with your boss in philosophy he screws you over like Adolf Hitler. Heh.

Yeah Larry Kreuger, I knew it started with an 'L' haha. Yeah it was a good show, it had Billy Beane and Chris Mullin on there and they were open with him about their players and strategies of being the GM.
