<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) -- Commissioner David Stern wants the NBA to send some of its players to the minor league. Stern proposed expanding the National Basketball Development League from its current six- or seven-team structure to 15 franchises, allowing each NBA team to farm out one young player on its roster. ``... If a team has a player below a certain age that it thinks would benefit from playing a lot, assigning the contract of that player to an affiliated team would be a good idea because we have young men playing four minutes instead of 40,'' Stern said Wednesday. Speaking at an impromptu news conference prior to the NBA Draft Lottery, Stern noted the idea needs the approval of the NBA Players Association. Union spokesman Dan Wasserman did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press seeking comment. The NBA's current labor agreement with its players expires after next season. Stern planned to discuss his idea with the union. </div> I'm in favor of this change. The talent in the NBA has become dilluted and the quality of the product has been getting worse and worse the last few seasons. Having an established minor league system would ensure the NBA rosters are filled with talented players. Based on the current NBA rosters, what players should be sent to the NBA Minors? Source
I read this during half time of the Pistons game, and I'd love to see this happen. I've always hated seeing guys with potential sitting on the bench averaging 5mpg, when they could be playing and developing somewhere. I'd love to see guys like Jamaal Sampson and Travis Outlaw out there playing in a minor league actually getting minutes and developing, instead of playing a total of 50 minutes a season.
One name stand out right away in my mind: The #2 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft pick that played under 5 minutes per game - Darko.
This would also send more kids to college. They will be worried about playing in the minors and want to improve there game. I am definately for this. Most players have to play overseas because there isn't that many leagues over here. This would bring more guys back to playing in there home country, and it would develop guys that aren't ready.
This sounds like the answer, I like it alot. It discourages kids from coming out of high school because they might not want to go to a minor league team, and at the same time, the players who really think they are ready and really are like Lebron and Amare wouldnt be affected. PLayers like Curry, Chandler, Darko, Kwame, D-Miles, and even a few college players who came out early could have benefited from this type of a program. You go to the NBDL and blow things up down there and you could get called up at any time, like MLB, its a hot idea.
Stern has been after this for years. However, the Player's Union hates the idea because they fear that being 'sent down' could be used as a punishment tactic for veteran players. This, of course, can be solved by negotiating an agreement that players cannot be sent down after having played so many NBA games but it does mean that the process will take quite a long time to negotiate. i.e. It will happen, but its a ways down the road.
I don't think it'll make any differene on the straight from highschool crowd, because they are usually phenoms that really aren't affected by anything but there born talent. Then again that may just be recent with Amare and Lebron and, I bet, Howard and Livingston. I don't remember the crappy ones. It would improve everything across the board otherwise though. Drive some of the crappy CBL type leagues out of the business and get a true farm system going where we can watch talent develop in our hometown and then follow them onto the national stage. Of course the bad thing about farm systems is that as soon as your team starts getting good your best player gets called up You could get former NBA players who fell out of favor slightly, foreigners whogot drafted but aren't ready yet due to age, college guys who didn't quite pan out yet... it'd be more competitive than it's sounding now if you got good coaches I'm sure. THis could also end the abuse of the "injured" list. Have a whole team of oldtimers and youngsters (developing) to draw from when you get injuries. There'll be rules of course but it'd beat the current system. Who does everyone think would rock the NBDL? I think Maciej Lampe would be an impressive center.
I am definetely for this. However there are a couple of major things that should be overlooked first. There should be a limit to how many players can be sent. Only younger players should be sent there, and as BRockwell said, it should not be used as a "detention" center for the veterans, or even for the younger players. From the Sixers perspective, I would definetely want to send Green, and Korver. They both show strengths in their respective fields, but need a more solid foundation on the rest of their games. Like, for Korver, he has no other game except for his shooting. His defense lacks just about everything, also his court vision is another thing.
aha... I didn't see the part about detention center... I guess it would be bad but on the other hand for players like Willis that will go on forever it'd be nice if they could play in the states instead of going overseas whenever they get too old to be competitive against those in their prime
Rodney White, Nick Tskitavilli, Stromile Swift.... The list goes on and on of players who could have used this. Even next year's potential #2 pick in the draft (Dwight Howard) is looking like he could use this. If they take this step as well as allow players to be drafted while in college like they do in the NHL, then the NBA would be one hell of a league again.
I like this idea, I think it would help out a lot of young players. I think we would also see more successful high schoolers in the NBA right now.
I like this idea aswell, it would defiantly get my approval. Not only would it send more HS Kids to College but it would also develop a lot of young players that doesn’t get much minutes, or just simply needs to develop their game. But, instead of David Stern going through all that trouble to start a whole new league. He should change the whole concept of NBDL and expand it to a greater degree than what he’s expected to do.
I like this idea cause people who deserve time just cant always get it and if they prove themselves in the NBDL or something they can awlays move on up

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting panfolk:</div><div class="quote_post">You think Stromile Swift needs to be in the NBDL?! He was the second overall pick, but he wasn't ready. He was drafted based on potential. How many other second overall picks wind up as backups by their fourth year in the NBA? The Grizzlies could have done a lot better job with Stromile's upbringing than they did. The NBA will help out players who enter the league in that kind of situation if they adopt the minor league idea. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">How does the hockey system work (or football or baseball for that matter?)</div> In hockey, players are drafted when they are 18 but are still allowed to play college hockey. Their contracts are put on hold until they finish college. This could help both the quality of the NBA and the NCAA. A lot of kids bolt for the NBA early because they are scared that they will never get the chance to make the pro's again if they get injured or if they are thought of as lesser players after a college career. This way there would be nothing to fear. It would be great if the NBA could adopt this and the minor league.
whats the point of doing it when theres the NBDL. But it wouldnt be a bad idea because some players like darko will never develop if he never plays so if it happens, it will be good for the players that never gets a chance to play.

In a minor league, they would. Thus if an NBA team wants to develop a player rather than just sit him on the bench, they can do so and know they could call him back up to their team at any time. If they let him go into the NBDL, they might never get him back. He'd be under contract with the NBDL team and would no longer have his NBA contract.
Haven't anyone else thought about the financial POV and the fans' POV? More franchises would obviously more income for the teams, and that would make up for some of the losses the NBA franchises suffer from. Also, that would also make basketball more popular in small towns since they'd have a team to support in that area. Also, teams could sign players to minor league contracts, and when they get called up, they sign 10-day's or a minimum NBA contract, thus giving them insurance for the rest of the year, even if they get re-banished to the minor league. I'd like to see each NBA team have an affliate minor league team.
When I saw this article I thought this was one of the best ideas out there, The Twolves have always had guys that needed to develop more, I think this would be very helpful for a player like Ndudi Ebi who is going to sit on IR because the Twolves are bringing in right now players. Or in the past maybe Will Avery wouldn't have sucked the hind tit like he did for them. This definately would help with players because they could use this for rehab assignements such as Baseball does. the age limit is dumb I think they should put on a limit of years of experience in the league because you could have a player that is 30 but needs to develop, granted he should have already but everyone needs a shot. I hope they figure something like this out for the future. especially the imediate future.
This is ridiculous. How did these players even make the NBA, when they're going to go back to a lower level of Basketball? These scouts better smarten up and wisely consider players to go to the NBA.
