<div class="quote_poster">Quoting panfolk:</div><div class="quote_post">Also when they hack just to avoid the easy finish on a break. That's some annoying stuff.</div> Preach, so true. Which would extend the regular season significantly, which leads to.. 2. No best of 7 series: ..A shorter and more exciting postseason. The longer regular season means people WILL want to do well because home-court advantage is more pronounced in the 5-game series (HHRRH).. As a lot of people have noticed, the first-round games have been difficult to watch. No upsets means no fun. Many say that the better team will always win a 7-game series, but the better team should win a 5-game series as well. I don't see a problem with that. The last thing we need is having to watch the Indiana Pacers cream the Celtics for one more game than necessary. 3. Instant Replay: The NBA has been pretty backwards about this. Get with the times! We have the technology to make sure each game is officiated to perfection. It isn't realistic to ask that every play be reviewed obviously, but adopt a rule similar to the NFL's-- allow each team an allocation of "Reviews" to use, at the cost of a full timeout or something similar. The fact that a game-breaking play that happens 5 seconds before the game ends can't be reviewed and one that happens as the buzzer sounds can is pretty stupid. 4. Backup Referees: Self-explanatory. Ref's are people too, and they can get hurt. The game should not suffer for that. This years' playoffs provide exactly why we need them. 5. Allstar Weekend: Dunk contest needs some love. What moron decided they needed RULES for this thing? I don't think players should be penalized for misses at all (well okay, fine,.. give them 5 tries for every dunk). Don't even get me started on the so-called "rules" currently in place (only 1st-3rd yr players, only allowed to enter thrice?).. Make it less about contest and more about showmanship! You won't need to increase the prize money to get people to play if it just straight up looks fun. 3-Point shootout is what it is; I wouldn't change a thing really. That celebrity/legend atrocity needs to be changed or removed. I want an NBA player. Not a WNBA player. Not an old guy. Not Justin Timberlake. An NBA player. The whole playmaker bit with the hoops and cones wasn't very entertaining to meeither, but whatever. I wouldn't know what to replace them with either. Possibly a halfcourt shot contest (I think I read about this on ESPN) or some kind of one-on-one contest (although I'd imagine that not many big stars would be interested since it involves risking their ego).. The rookie games have been dunkfests which is something you can't really help with young players.. A lot of these guys hardly get to play in the regular season and just want to get on a highlight reel. If anything the selection process needs some work (Utah got snubbed).. Allstar game is the only time East/West conferences would be considered. People talk about raising the stakes and whatnot to get people to play harder, but shoot this isn't the playoffs. I watch allstar weekend to see T-Mac throw it off the backboard and dunk it, not a grind-it-out defense that I'm sure the Duncan/KG/Shaq frontcourt is capable of. 6. Remove Doc Rivers as a TV analyst. Case in point-- 1st quarter: "This is interesting they're putting Artest on Hamilton and this works for Detroit because Hamilton plays off the ball--he runs off screens and just catches and shoots, whereas Artest is a great on-ball defender" 3rd quarter: "See the Pistons are going to Hamilton and letting him take Artest off the dribble because that's his game" 4th quarter: "And now Hamilton is scoring again since he's not trying to take it off the dribble. That's his game." He apparently cant make up his mind about things either. Fire him please. 7. NBA League Pass: is a rip off. Give me every game and include NBA TV in the package. Many thanks to ESPN writers for pushing to have this fixed. I think that's it for now </div> How bout actually calling defensive 3 seconds on big men(That means you SHAQ!!!!). Get some slashing to the basket more than guys chucking 3s that have no business shooting the ball. And if you are under 500,you dont get into the playoffs. Celtics and Knicks had no business playing in the playoffs. Just give the teams byes. That oughta tell owners to do something about the mediocre products being put out.
Yeah players have fallen in love with the 3, no doubt. But that's something that will change gradually.. Once players once again realize that jacking up from downtown won't win you games (or fans for that matter), things will change.. As for the .500, that's the whole point of abolishing conferences and division my man The top 16 teams in the league play in the playoffs.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting tradebark:</div><div class="quote_post">I do like that they changed the rules for fouling a "breakaway", good effort made to fix that.</div> I missed that one. What's the rule say specifically?
i believe thats the rule that gives the player that gets fouled 2 free throws, and the ball out of bounds if he is in front of everyone and he gets fouled on the break.
You can still do the 1-16 seeding without demolishing conferences and divisions In fact, ill go one better... seed 1-18, top two records in the nba gets a bye the best of 5 first round, regardless of confrence and division with no re-seeding. Seeding by overall record, then divisional record, then confrence record. tie breakers resolved by points.

Unless you make each team play every other team the same number of times (which essentially abolishes conferences), it won't be fair. After all, if you had just seeded them 1-16 this season, then the Pacers would have gotten home court advantage over the Kings/Wolves/Lakers/Spurs? The western conference obviously has more competition (see # of teams above .500)..
What happened to harbingerofdoom and my numbers post? I know I posted the 10 teams that had the potential to score and 100 and more. That took me awhile to look up. Anyways, having at least 10 teams scoring a 100pts and more will help the leagues appeal too. Combining this and everything that has been posted here, should help the NBA a ton.
1. Abolish conferences and divisions: i dont really understand how this could help the nba. I think the divisions and conferences help to keep the Nba organized. Thought maybe a few team movements might help. But that probally wont help. So i disagree with this idea. 2. No best of 7 series: The best of 7 series is a tad bit long when team are being dominated ex the celts. so I agree that something should be done. 3. Instant Replay: I love this idea i think the Nba coaches should have the abiltityto do instant replays as the Nfl coaches do. And as the Nfl coaches are charged a timeout I think the Nab coaches should be charged a timeout as well. 4. Backup Referees:Yes i expect the Nba to do something about the problem that they went throught this year with Refs that would allow backups to be substituted into games. 5. Allstar Weekend: 6. Remove Doc Rivers as a TV analyst. I personally like Doc. I dont like hearing That Walton guy though. but Doc is gone as far as I'm concerned now he is a coach. and his players will have to deal with him. 7. NBA League Pass: I wanted League pass b4 i heard this horrifying news that you dont recieve every game. But Its all about the cheddar. and I have no complaints with there marketing schemes. I've come to expect it from every business.
I'd like to see the local coverage teams be allowed to broadcast the NBA playoffs and finals for their respective teams. These people have followed the team for the entire season and travel with the team so they know the ins and outs and all the background stories of how their team has played for the duration of a season. I don't need Al Michaels or some East Coast Media guy telling me what to look for with the Lakers. These guys haven't been in the trenches for the entire season and they just use the same commentary and cliche phrases. At the very least, the two teams left should have their local guys announce the games for them when they are the home team. So when the Lakers play in Los Angeles, Stu Lance and Kevin Sunderland would call the game. And when the series moves to Detroit, their coverage team would call the game for the Pistons and give the nationwide audience a unique look at the team they have covered and traveled all season long with.
I agree so much with that. And man you have no idea how FRUSTRATING it is to listen to Doc Rivers call the Finals. It's the most disgusting pro-Lakers crap where he uses "that's his game" and "wow" as his catchphrases. UGH.

If anything the NBA would be more organized when geography didn't play a part in homecourt advantage in the playoffs, not to mention making the playoffs in the first place. I would've rather seen the Blazers or Jazz than the Celtics this year.
1. Abolish conferences and divisions: This is understanable, but that probably wouldn't happen. The truth is, the way it is now is probably the best way for it to be, unless they made just East/West. 2. No best of 7 series: Personally, I think rounds 1 and 2 should be 5-game series and the Finals and Championship should be 7-games. Simply because I think that since the first 2 series are usually pretty unevenly matched and are over in 4-5 games anyway, while the last 2 are more interesting to watch, and personally the longer the good series are the better. 3. Instant Replay: I think about this every game, when I see some bad call made, and I guarantee theres several a game. What I really think needs to be done, is to have some people/machines that have cameras and are watching the game from several good views. When an uncertain foul/violation occurs, all of the people send the reff a vote, he will have some kind of pager that tells him the voted outcome, and he will make the call. This would be quick, easy and accurate and not to hard for the rich NBA to do. 5. Allstar Weekend: The dunk contest is redicouous and stupid , thats all I will say. 1 on 1 is a great idea,(Duncan vs Garnett) and Id love to see what players would even participate. The celbrities/legends thing is just one of the NBA's other feeble attempts to get more money and fans. As for TV anlysists, I am a personal Bill Walton hater who cant stand his being a Laker fanboy and hating other teams, plus once he said," This team is all lathered up..." I cant stand his gay and idiotic comments. 7. NBA League Pass: I dont get League pass or NBA TV because I refuse to give the NBA money watch its games. I am a native of Minnesota tha lives in Cali so I see very little of my teams games.

Many thanks to ESPN writers for pushing to have this fixed. I think that's it for now </div> The National Basketball Association, is what it is. What's that? A business out trying to make as much money that they possibly can. Ratings, ratings, ratings, ratings...It's all about the ratings. Honestly do you think that the Celtics would have sold half of their home game tickets, sold a jersey, or had any fanbase at home at all if there were no divisions/conferences? The conferences/divisions allows the NBA to maximize its profits from every city they have a team in. It makes it look like teams are better/worse than they acctually are. It's all crap to me. I hate the fact that they have biased officials officiating a game. If the NBA could not control the officiating, then Yao would post up and be more aggressive. He can't though, because he is to big for his defenders, who act all weak and innocent when trying to play defense against the 'soft' Yao Ming. If they just let him post up and did not slap him with a foul everytime, he could easily drop it in everytime. Sorry about ranting on Yao's case... Another thing, I like the idea KG-MVP stated. I love having a best out of seven series, and hell a best out of nine would be better(acctually nvm, that might be too long). Well a best out of 5 for the 1st round, and then a best out of 7 after that is a great idea. Oh yea, 7 games means more money as well. I don't want to go back to the topic on ratings, but whenever you see something new done by the NBA, or question why a rule(thing)/something is the way it is, just think this, How will this benefit the NBA's ratings?
Abolishing divisions and conferences would have some significant implications on the way the game is played. PROS: -best teams make it into the playoffs -best team takes home the championship -relative parity across the League -teams can't coast, knowing they have an easy division/conference matchup -no more disparity between conferences (leads to...) -best matchup in the finals -level playing field (no easy/hard schedules) CONS: -loss of organization (leads to...) -no All-Star Game (at least the East vs. West structure) -less rivalries -difficulty of creating dynasties -little continuity in playoffs (eg: the Pacers/Pistons have garnered interest because they have faced each other for the last few years.) -potential loss of audience/interest (if the playoffs are predominantly West coast teams, Eastern fans may be turned off.) -questioning of past records/stats/championships (would they have been the same in the new system?) I have the same problems over the system. The crappy finals (eg: Nets vs. Lakers) over the years and the crappy teams that have been able to sneak through or get high seeds(eg: this years Atlantic division winner), make the playoffs less interesting. However, I think abolishing the conferences and divisions is too drastic. I think the conferences are just too big to get rid of, and we just have to live with the problems. Divisions are important as well, but the seeding priority should be changed. Its a difficult problem, because you have to balance individual matchups and rivalries and higher quality playoffs.
I strongly agree with the Instant Replay during games. Instead of like a bad call being passed and the players getting in their face, why not allow the 2 teams to have like 2 challenges each quarter, something like that to take away most of the "bad call" business.
