DENVER -- Denver Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe has mixed feelings about the possibility of Carmelo Anthony playing in the Athens Olympics in August

This week, Orlando Magic guard Tracy McGrady decided against playing for Team USA, leading to speculation about who might replace him.

Anthony, who turns 20 on Saturday, played in 86 of 87 games during his rookie season. Playing on the U.S. team would reduce his recovery time before the 2004-05 season.

"Absolutely, it's a concern," Vandeweghe said Thursday. "You never want to deny a kid a chance to play for his country, but my responsibility is to make the Nuggets better, so that's a definite concern."</div>

I can definitely see Kiki's point of view. This kid is the franchise player on there team. I can understand why they want him to stay here and not play. I guess in the end, it is up to Carmelo to decide.

I too can see it, but I think he should go over there, playing on this team will be something that he will remember for life.

Although I do see why Vandeweghe doesn't want Carmelo to go play for the U.S.A. team, I think it should be up to Carmelo to decide and not the team's. Players are at risk of injury every time they set a foot on the basketball court, this is nothing new. He also has been very healthy this season, and the only injury that I remember him having was that one he missed a game with. He seems to be in good shape, and I think it would help him more than the risk by going out there and playing for our country.

Personally I think it's a slap in the face he hasn't even been invited yet. Carmelo had just a good season as 'Bron and hasn't been invited YET.

With players such as McGrady, Kidd, Martin, Shaq, Garnett, Ray Allen etc. backing out of the Olympics Melo should definitely join the roster.

I tend to agree. Carmelo has had an amazing season, and he was debately the ROY. For Lebron to get asked first just goes to show which player receives more attention.

I actually feel really bad for Carmelo being the the LBJ's shadow. I really do believe that Camelo will accomplish so much more than James at the end of their careers. I read this article and now it really let's me know how he really feels about the situation.

The U.S. does need players. Especially with a whole bunch of them backing out right now. I feel like he should go too, and give the U.S. a better chance of winning the [IMG] again.

I understand where Kiki is coming from with his concern. BUT - To have your player play on a GLOBAL stage is pretty hard to be concerned with. If Melo makes the team, imagine how many 'Anthony' Jerseys will sell in Asia!!! Kiki should be happy that a Denver Nugget can play at such a high level, he should want his organization to be great. It can only be truly glorified if it gets world-wide recognition. But still, Kiki has a right to be concerned about Melo and his health.
