There has been a lot of talk over the past few years about poor perimeter shooting among NBA players. I've seen a ton of great college players who couldn't succeed at the NBA level due to their broken shot (i.e. Shammgod) I remember when Jason Kidd first came into the league, he had one of the worst jumpers in the league. I can recall a fan holding up a sign saying "Hey Ason Kidd, you missing a J " lol.... Baron Davis was another guy who came into the league with a broken jumper. But both guys have established themselves as perimeter threats (even if they still aren't great) and improved their game vastly. My question is what players are "a jumpshot away from greatness," meaning their lack of a perimeter shot is keeping them (or might keep them) from reaching their potiential The first guy that pops into my head is T.J. Ford, but he's only a rookie so there's plenty of time for improvement. Another player that comes to mind is Omar Cook...(maybe not greatness but pretty good)
Darius Miles, he's had a long time to improve Lebron James also needs to improve his jumper, and Dwyane Wade just to make him even more of a threat if he can shoot from the outside consistently.
Vince Carter and LeBron James took a lot of heat once they entered the league because of their jumper .. Vince worked hard on it and established one of the best jump shots, to a level where he depended on it in clutch situations where he could have driven to the basket. As for King James, he really amazed me with his shot this season. Jump Shot ain't a rocket science, it's just hard work, staying in the GYM and shooting, and it'll payoff.
Like Air Canada said, when Vince Cater came into the league, all he could do was dunk, like LeBron James. They both had the Rookie of the Year awards, but a few years later, Vince Carter has improved like crzy on his perimeter shooting. I think LeBron James will kind of be the same as Carter in a couple of years. He has enough time to improve it, and soon will have one of the best three point ranges in the game, like Vince Carter does.
The main reason Vince had to improve his jumper was his injuries. He wanted to play it safer and pull up instead of drive in.
Darius Miles is not a jumpshot away from greatness like someone said earlier, he was injured his 1st season on the cavaliers and the look at who he played with the rest of his time on the cavs, LBJ wants his shots(not that he dont deserve them) Boozer, and Ricky D all demanded shots and more time than DMiles. Anyone know what that guy's full name was who invented the move shamgod?
lebron will eventually have it to make him the next legend in the making. i also think that once kenyon martin starts to him jumpers, that will take him into the next level of pf's.
I don't know if you want to call it a "jumpshot", but all Amare Stoudemire needs to be one of the best PFs in the league is a midrange shot. Getting that shot will make his defenders have to play up on him, and once they play up on him, he'll be to the hole every single time. He scores how much he does on one move, he drives to the left, spins back to the right, jumps really high and scores. I mean come on! Just needs the shot, but its not really a "jumpshot"

Wow, too many to name...not enough pure shooters in todays game... Dwanye Wade Allen Iverson (if he could shoot, he'd be even better) Darius Miles TJ Ford Ben Wallace LeBron James Jerry Stackhouse ...the list could go on and on...
Few names I'd throw out there: Steve Francis Andre Miller Jason Richardson Richard Jefferson I'd also say that Trenton Hassell would be much more valued if he is at least a consistent three-point shooter.

Og15 and the other guy its DWYANE not Dwayne or Dwanye... Thought i would just point that out. Didnt B-Diddy have a bad shot when he came into the league?? what about Rafer Alston, but Skip has improved his so im happy.

Not good at all.

This guy makes shots all the time. I disagree like crzy on that one. Also Jerry Stackhouse has a pretty good jumpshot. Your right about Wade, Ford, and James because their rookies. In the next few seasons, they will be great on their jumpshots. Of course Ben Wallace has to improve on his. If he had a way great jumpshot, he'd play more better and also one of the more dominating figures in the league.

I love Iverson, he is my hero but saying he has a jump shot is blasphemy. Nonetheless, a pure shooter? c'mon man, no disrespect but next time read what you are saying. few names of players that could have a better jump shot: Mcgrady (he is not horrible,he could be attempting too much jump shots) Dwayne Wade Lebron James darius miles Steve francis Tj Ford
Can anybody remember seeing a game where both teams at least hit jump shots in a row? It's been awhile since I've even seen that.
Nice thread. We have to give guys like TJ Ford, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade some time to develop more. Iverson could definately use some improvement on his jumpshot. He can go on stretches where he doesn't hit anything. Allen Iverson Steve Francis Jason Kidd Kenyon Martin Richard Jefferson Darius Miles Quick list. No rookies.
The guys that could benefit from a consistent jump shot most are the slashers who play the shooting guard and small guard positions. They do not have the height to post up, and their position forces them to stay on the perimeter. Now, they do not have a good outside shot, so defenders tend to play them for the drive, thus giving them space to shoot. They take a shot and miss. If they can sink that perimeter shot at least 5 out of 8 times, defenders will be forced to guard them close, which means they can beat them off the dribble with their quickness. Guys whose games are what I just stated: Jefferson Wade Ford Richardson Eddie Robinson Ricky Davis
