<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> As NBA Finals Begin, Jackson Is Seeing Red Holzman, Auerbach Set Standards for Coach By Mike Wise Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, June 6, 2004; Page E01 LOS ANGELES Red comes up daily, both men -- competing for space and time in Phil Jackson's psyche. The Red he still reveres passed away almost six years ago, at age 78. Red Holzman is the late New York Knicks coach, a firm, humble man who gave a gangly, free spirit from the early 1970s two gifts: minutes on an NBA championship team and a career blueprint after he could no longer play. The other Red in Jackson's conscience is 86 years old, still proud and crass. Red Auerbach is the Boston Celtics' patriarch, who sucks on lit cigars and swears at his television in his condominium near American University. He sees that smirky intellectual with the coat-hanger shoulders taking aim at his record, lording over that "ready-made team" Jerry West packed in a school lunchbox for him. </div> If he wins this title, will Jackson be the greatest coach to ever coach in the NBA? Jackson sees Red
Yes, I think if he does win this title he will be the greatest coach ever. Also didn't he win a title with ever team he coached?
With or without this ring I think he's the greatest coach ever. Although I question his coaching at times as everyone else does, there's no question he knows what he's doing. He will not only have the most rings ever for a coach, but he also has the highest winning percentage in the history too. 44-0 when winning game 1 of a series.. wow? I know he's been blessed with talent his whole coaching career, but we've also seen many other teams who were full of talent but didn't get anywhere. I've really never liked Phil Jackson, but I don't think there's a doubt that he's the best ever. This was definitely the hardest team he's had to coach in his career, and even with all the chaos within the team we're right back in the finals again.
The greatest basketball coach ever is John Wooden... as for the NBA, its up for debate. Phil has been blessed with enormous talent, but so was Auerbach. I don't really care much for the "greatest NBA coach" title, but Auerbach's comments are really unclassy IMO... give Phil a little bit of credit, 9 rings is a great accomplishment
Like Phreeze said with or without this ring he will still be the best coach IMO, he believes in everyone brings the best out of them. Triangle Offense is stellar thats why he uses it practically every time, and he's a coach so he knows best.... Auerbach had one of the greatest players to ever play on his team and Jackson has done it with MJ and Scottie & Shaq and Kobe.
hmmmmm........lets see The greatest coach ever?!?!? If I had MJ and Scottie....or Kobe and Shaq.. You'd be calling me the greatest coach ever!!!!
I have a question .. Today people were telling me about them hearing somewhere that Phil was trading Kobe , Payton , Malone , and Fisher .. Is that true ? If I had MJ and Scottie....or Kobe and Shaq.. You'd be calling me the greatest coach ever!!!![/QUOTE]

He's lucky. Always had superstars and answers. With the Bulls it was Jordan, with the Lakers it was triangle offense.
Phil Jackson is a great coach, and yeah he's mad,but hey sometimes things happen for a reason Does anyone here think Jackson will come back next year or not?
MR_SAC_KING, no I don't think he will. Larry Brown is a better basketball coach than Phil Jackson. Larry didn't have a ready-made team like Jackson. Larry didn't have MJ to play for him, he didn't have Kobe AND Shaq to play for him. He is also the only coach ever to win an NBA title and an NCAA title. Ever. No other coach has been able to do that. Larry Brown has always taken teams that were bad into above average. Detroit Pistons were the first and only above average team that Larry Brown took over and look where he took them. Phil Jackson has always been handed a team with superstars, that makes his job hell of a lot easier. A good coach can take a team with one or two of the best players in the whole league to win championships, but it takes a great coach like Larry Brown to take an above average team to win a championship. Larry Brown > Phil Jackson all the way in my book.

Phil Jackson took great players who couldnt play together and turned them around quickly and efficiently. Larry Brown has never done anything quickly or efficiently. Dont hate on Phil because he had great players. The whole NBA is made up of superstars now. And still only one team wins a year. And until Larry Brown the only other coaches were Jackson and Popovich. For the last five years. dont be too quick to forget the laurels of others while kissing the ass of today's hero.
I don't really see as Phil Jackson as the greatest ever but I see him as one of the best ever. All the best coaches were in different eras. From Red Auerbach, to Lenny Wilkins, Pat Riley, and now Phil Jackson. Also Phil was kind of lucky, like I said in a different thread than this. He had superstars when he coached the Bulls, and he had even more superstars when he coached the Lakers. But Phil still did win a title for every team he coached and thats what makes a good coach - winning a ring. He won 9 and tied Auerbach, which was another great coach who won all 9 titles in a row, if I'm not mistaken. But Phil is one of the greatest, if not the greatest.
I agree with SupraJames. Larry Brown turned around lottery bound teams and brought them to the playoffs. He's only had one above average team, and he took them all the way. Just imagine if he coached players such as Kobe, Shaq, Scottie, and Jordan. Rings don't make a player, nor do they make a great coach. A great coach is someone who can bring the best out of every single player on any given night. And Larry Brown is just that. You could throw in the debate that Phil Jackson is the better coach because he has 9 rings; or that he took above average teams and polished them to contenders. But either way you look at it, they are great coaches who have done a lot to improve their teams.
