Fittingly, the announcement will occur on the same day of the Charlotte Bobcats' expansion draft.

The two events definitely are connected.

But that contract, negotiated by Bus Cook, gave Dampier the right to void the final two years and become an unrestricted free agent, and the 29-year-old went agent shopping in April looking for the man who could maximize his earnings based on his 2003-04 success.

Dan Fegan -- yes, the same guy who delivered Gilbert Arenas to Washington last summer for $65 million -- was hired to do just that.

As of Monday, only seven clubs were far enough under the projected cap to make Dampier that kind of offer. But it's possible as many as six more teams could join the list if Charlotte -- given the proper incentive -- takes a high-priced salary off their hands in the expansion draft.

And now that it appears Kobe Bryant will remain with the Lakers, Dampier moves right up there with Kenyon Martin and Rasheed Wallace atop the list of eligible free agents this summer. </div>

Also mentions in the article that the Lakers are seriously looking at Dampier and would likely need to do a sign and trade to land him.

If we could get something with equal or close to equal value for Dampier that would be a huge plus.

How about something unequal in our favor. We've been getting screwed every year by St. Jean, Twardzick, and you name it for over a decade now.

I'd rather see the Lakers pay $10 million to Dampier and the other $20 million to other players than all $30 million to Shaq.. But then to get a trade like this to work it'd probably have to involve Troy Murphy, Nick Van Exel, and Mickael Pietrus just for the Lakers to consider it. If I were the Lakers though, I'd take something like that [IMG]

I'd rather have 3 good players than 1 good but fading player to tell you the truth. We don't need primadonnas on the team.

I'd save give Damp 10 million and hopefully they structure the contract in such a way where the highest amount paid is on the final year with a team option or something. That way he becomes a more valuable trade piece.

I would resign Damp for $10m but have some sort of clause so if he plays like sh!t again, he is done.

Yeah...they call those things team options... [IMG]

If Damp signs an extension to his current contract or he opts out and signs a new deal with them, then the Warriors could, and most likely will, put a team option in the deal.

Thank God. I do not want to see a repeat of the 98 season.
