They paid nash way too much. I understand he's a good PG but come on.... What kinda of cap space do they have left with marions overpaid self. What if amare wants an extension? Can we afford to keep him? We can't afford to lose him....
If my math is correct the Suns should have between 6-7 million left to spend to get a center. Memo Okur is a likely guy you could get for that. You spend 6 million on him and It's likely Joe D might not match but thats only If Sheed doesn't return.
i'm surprised so many people think the suns overpaid for nash... He's a top 5 pg, and he was the heart and soul of the Mavs (to say they'll miss him is an understatement)... I think this trade instantly takes Phoenix back into the playoffs next season. Nash hits big shots, and he pushes the ball which is good for the athletes on the Suns. He's in the same league as Jason Kidd (better shooter), Sam Cassell, Mike Bibby and Baron Davis (90+% from the line vs 60+% from the line), and definitely a better leader than Marbury or Steve Francis. Unless you're the Rockets, Spurs, Wolves or (last year's) Lakers, you have to pay a bit more to attract a free agent. You have to spend a bit more to keep a player's old team from matching. So either offer 65 million over 5 years for Nash, or offer 55 million over 5 years and have Cuban cut a cheque for that amount and get nothing. All that cap space isn't going to do any good if they don't spend it.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting harbingerofdoom:</div><div class="quote_post">http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/bask...h.ap/index.html the 16 mil they are under the cap does not include Nash's deal.</div> That makes no sense. Explain it please. So how much do we have left under the cap?
Panfolk & Og15: I really want Dice back next year too. I think late last year he was the veteran that really held the team together. He seems like a great influence on Amare, plus he's already played with Nash. This takes Dallas out of getting Shaq and the Suns of landing Kobe. Looks like they might end up staying in LA after all.
great move by the Suns, Nash + Marion + Stoudemire will be an exciting trio and a nice foundation for the future...if they manage to get either Okur (very likely) or Dampier (not so likely), they'll be in good shape and should be better than Denver this season...

Nash has a history of breakdowns towards the end of the year, and he can't play heavy minutes or he'll be nothing come playoff time. Nash is also weak on the defensive end, and even though he brings a good shooting, scoring, and playmaking punch, it's not worth 13 million a year at this stage in his career.
by the 3rd or 4rth year we could be paying that much for him as our backup to barbosa (or whomever)... as the excitement wears off the extremeness of the contract is showing through. Oh well. Barbosa will get plenty of minutes it looks like. It's funny that starting is a sign of honor when you really need the experienced people at the ends of games. This season's team is so pale it's the Need-some-Sun's, especially if Vroman makes the team and we get Okur (just a joke folks)
Antonia McDyce is a bastard. Don't you remember the year he ran away from the suns and went to another team...the Nuggets if i remember correctly. Why would we want someone who doesn't have any loyalty? Perhaps the only loyalty in the NBA is $$$$. Paying that much for a Steve Nash 3 years younger would of made sense. But, the suns risk another repeat of Penny..which scares the crap out of me. Hopefully Nash can stay healthy. However, like others have said we needed to spend the money and our options were running out.

Anything less and Cuban would have just matched. There weren't really any other all-star calibre PG's on the free agent market - Jamal Crawford is available and younger, but still unproven whether he can lead a team (look at Gilbert Arenas in Washington - big contract, young, but hasn't really made his team better). They spend their free agent $$ on Nash and they add a player without having to trade their core of Marion, Stoudemire, Johnson. Look at the impact Cassell had on Minnesota. Cassell is getting old, but he's got experience and leadership to help take a young team to the next level. They just gotta hope and pray he stays healthy. He played so many minutes in Dallas cuz the team fell apart when he was off the floor. Hopefully with Barbosa backing him up he can play around 35 minutes a game, and he won't burn out. I can think of a lot of worse players making more than 13 million... Hopefully he won't be another Allan Houston. The Suns should be running most teams into the ground next season.
