Just read the article on espn that the Pistons' offered Okur a 6 yr $40 million dollar deal. Doesn't this seem a little high or is that just me? Though Memo is great, the Pistons really need Sheed.
yeah that seems really high...especially since he got like 10-15 minutes only during the season and did not seem like a favorite of Larry Brown's...they need to be sure they have Rasheed wrapped up before spending money on players who they dont really need...
No that offer is very fair and the sort of deal he should get, I expect Utah to offer him more though. Sheed has been offered 10 million a year so this Okur offer won't effect that.
I think Utah will make a better offer than that, they really like Okur and have a lot of money to spend. Centre is their first priority, and Kevin O'Connor (Jazz GM) has already stated they will make an attempt at Okur.
Okur, with some more minutes or a starting role, i think he could get a solid stat line. $40 mil+ sounds a bit steep, but maybe he can prove he is worth it if Utah signs him.
Wait a minute.... Okur can get $40 million, no problem..... But when Martin asks for the max or near max, its a problem...... Riiiiiiiiiight....
I was just worried that offering Okur $40 million meant that they are having problems signing Rasheed. Being a big Pistons fan, I root for both Sheed and Memo. But realistically, they just plain need Rasheed. If they sign Rasheed and he does his thing, as he did in the playoffs, there really will be no need for Okur, especially at this price. That being said, I do think that Okur definately deserves the price tag, just not for his role on this team. I hope the Jazz can offer him something better, and give him the playing time.
way too much money for him imo I have just personally never seen his potential? I mean everyone raves about how he was going to be this summer's Gilbert Arenas but I just don't see it.. Someone write it out for me ..

That alone will get teams interested and willng to offer big money. When Okur plays alot he produces. This deal is the MLE alot different to any kind of max deal.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the price tag on Okur to rise, in which case this could end up helping Martin coincidentally.

Although that wasn't the point in your reply. You tried to somehow bring K-mart getting the max in this thread and comparing it to a guy getting the MLE over 6 years. Couldn't really see the point in that.
That seems like a lot of money for a person who will likely be a bench player next year. If Sheed does get resigned, I don't see why they would offer him $40 mil. Personally, I don't think he's worth that much, but, who knows. And, I also would expect the Jazz to make him an offer before this is all said and done.
Looks like the Jazz have got him <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Utah Jazz have verbal commitments from restricted free agents Mehmet Okur and Gordan Giricek. The Jazz would not release terms of either agreement, other than to say they were multiyear contracts, Utah vice president for basketball operations Kevin O'Connor said Monday night. Detroit TV station WDIV said the offer to Okur was for between $42 million and $48 million over six years. The Jazz cannot sign Okur before July 14 as the Detroit Pistons center is a restricted free agent, and the Pistons have 15 days to match the Jazz offer.</div> Link
Only If Sheed decides to leave will Okur be a Utah Jazz player, will be interested to see what happens in the next 3 weeks.
Well, the writing's on the wall. If Wallace leaves the Pistons, they will match Okur's offer. If Rasheed stays, Okur becomes the starting center for Utah but will not get a chance for another championship in the near future. Simple as that.
$48 mil for someone who sat the bench the second half of the year? That seems like a lot. And considering he hasn't proven much yet in his NBA career. I don't get it. I think management is going crazy. Going out and getting big men and giving them huge deals just because a quality one is hard to come by. It's nuts.
