<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night extended a six-year maximum contract offer to restricted free agent Kenyon Martin, ESPN.com has learned.

Martin has not yet told the Hawks he'll sign their offer sheet on July 14, which gives the Denver Nuggets a small window to make a similar offer to Martin.

League sources told ESPN.com that the Nuggets plan to decide by Friday or Saturday whether to extend a rich offer sheet to Martin or pass on the All-Star forward and keep their name in the Kobe Bryant sweepstakes.

There is no obvious course for the Nuggets to pursue. If they pass on Martin, they would remain long shots to land Bryant and thus risk coming away with virtually nothing of consequence from a summer into which they carried some $20 million in salary-cap space. Denver has reached a verbal agreement to re-sign center Marcus Camby, but the Nuggets' other main free-agent target besides Martin and Bryant -- San Antonio's Manu Ginobili -- reached a verbal agreement Thursday to stay with his current team.

I doubt he signs that offer sheet with the Hawks, if Denver comes with a similiar offer. I dont think K-Mart would want to ever play for the Hawks, yes he wants a max contract but he also wants to be somewhere the team is going to be competive, the Hawks are not going to become petive for alongtime to come.

Right now its either the Nuggets, offering him max & the Nets deciding whether they will or wont match. Or Martin just deciding to except less money to stay in Jersey on his own. I really dont see K-Mart ever taking the risk of having to go to the Hawks, because If the Nets dont match this max contract he is stuck on the Hawks. Hs competive level will over ride his need/want for a max contract in that situation.

A very smart move by the Hawks, and I'll tell you why:

I would've thought that Cleveland were ready to trade Big Z to Atlanta for picks, as to extend their own max offer to KMart... the only way they could've saved face in this whole Boozer situation, IMO. Bottom line, Cleveland have to target someone to keep LeBron content, because he's mighty peeved at losing his big running mate. Who else is left, bar KMart?

Now, obviously, KMart is preferable to Big Z, so Atlanta has chosen to cut out the middle man, and get proactive about things. I expect that Martin will get an offer from Denver also, but Atlanta could actually pretty decent with a line-up of Terry/Diaw/Childress/Martin/someone...

    Come on Atl.

I cant wait to see what happens.

I believe the Hawks have the gaurd position on loack asd of now with. Terry, Person, sura, and Jackson if he stays.

this team beat the Lakers and mavericks with there gaurds and coposetic team.

I believe there only need as of now is a decent post player. and with Kenyon martin now maybe coming to the hawks.

I believe they could possibly entise other guys to come to ATl.

I hope this happens, Martin would be an allstar for sure again and be putting up bigger digits than ever playing for the hawks + the hawks might start winning some games with him in town and there draft picks Josh's (Childress/Smith), Donta Smith and Royal Ivey.
