exactly how does one know when a rumor is building up? dont people tell whoever they tell , "dont tell anyone else." if the team and agents know, do they tell espn or their newspaper, does someone overhear a close member to the team, does it slip or do they tell sports sources directly??? someone asks a team official if something will happen, they say "no way" and it happens anyways...????? how do rumors begin?
I don't know where rumors start, but I just heard on the radio that Kobe just agreed to sign with Phoenix!
rumours always seem to start with an "unnamed source" or a "team official" who is supposedly in the know about insider information going to the media with whatever they have. After that, news spreads and before long everyone is all over it. IMO, media like espn have deals and contacts with people on the inside who tell them any information they can find out.
i think the media makes up rumors most of the time. It makes sense if ESPNEWS comes on and they say "sources say Vince Carter is going to the Bulls" your going to watch to see what they say. Then they usually drag it out and follow it up with another Basketball story so u will continue watching. IMO its a way to attract viewers to your channel or your radio station.
i reckon it starts when a fan thinks hey, Vince carter would be great on our team. then they ask what others think, and then somehow word gets around and some media folk take it seriously. another one is when players are asked about where they'd like to go if offered the choice, players my spit out or 5 teams they wouldn't mind playing with if the opportunity was there, and then the media just feeds off it. in some cases i reckon it gets the ball clubs thinking, "hey why didn't we ever think of that trade?" and sometimes this results in the actual trade.
I was fooling around talking to some friends about 4 months ago when AI was injured (I like in PA) everyone was thinking of who they would trae him for. I said AI should go to toronto for VC. Then a couple weeks later I hear its a rumor. Then when they announce that AI wont be traded the rumor dies out for a while and I am saying to everyone they can still trade glenn robinson and some role players. Then the rumor pops up again. I think they start through super stars being unhappy with losing teams then people starting to make there own trades in there minds ofr that player. Then they tell it to everyone they no and it becomes a pyramid till it finally catches the medias attention that it is possible.
